On the front, the marker reads, "Camp Roswell was one of the first and largest base camps built in the United States and was located on Orchard Park Road. The camp operated from August 1942 to February 1946 and interned 4,816 German POWs at its peak. Camp construction was similar to Army training centers with the addition of watchtowers and fences. Most POWs performed agricultural labor, particularly during cotton season. Associated smaller side camps were located in Fort Sumner, Artesia and Dexter." On the reverse, "During World War II, 155 prison or war (POW) base camps and 511 branch camps were constructed in 46 states. By 1945, over 425,000 German, Italian, and Japanese POWs were held in the U.S. including more than 371,000 Germans. POWs worked in farms, mills, canneries, public works projects, and other low-risk jobs that alleviated labor shortages during the war. The marker reads, "Sallie Chisum Robert, First Lady of Artesia, 1858-1936. Sallie was 19 when she arrived from Texas at her Uncle John Chisum's Jinglebob Land and Livestock Company ranch south of Roswell. Her ranching skills rivaled those of the cowboys she joined driving cattle up her uncle's Goodnight - Loving Trail to Colorado. She and her second husband opened the first post office and reading room in what became Artesia. Her landholdings are part of Artesia's original townsite and include the site of her cast-stone house where she raised many orphans. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Some of her diaries preserved at the Artesia Historical Museum and Art Center. They include entries about her uncle, Billy the Kid, the Regulators, and the Lincoln County war." There is more online. Sallie lived in Texas until her mother and sister's deaths, when she moved to New Mexico to live with her uncle, cattle barron John Chisum. It was said that every cowboy in the area was in love with Sallie Chisum. In her diary, she wrote a little about the soon to be famous outlaw, William Bonney, aka, Billy the Kid. "He was brimming over with lighthearted gaiety and good humor. He always looked as if he had just stepped out of a band box. In a broad brimmed white hat, dark coat and vest, gray trousers worn over his boots, gray flannel shirt and black four in hand tie, and sometimes, would you believe it?, a flower in his lapel and quite the dandy." In her old age Sallie was interviewed about Billy the Kid and said of the infamous legend, "In all his personal relations he was the 'pink' of politeness and as courteous a little gentleman as I ever met." Summers and installed in 1999 at Pioneer Plaza. Chisum, a prominent cattleman, was known as the largest cattle producer in the U.S. during the mid-1870s, managing up to 80,000 longhorn steers. The statue commemorates his role in establishing the cattle industry in the Pecos Valley, where he brought his first herd in 1867 via the Goodnight-Loving Trail and set up his South Spring Ranch near Roswell. The sculpture captures his legacy as a key figure in the early West and Roswell's development.
