Teachers genuinely care about each child's progress. The Montessori approach to education equips children to create, challenge and think on their own. I also like that elementary grade children seem to have a lot more movement throughout the day due to the programs design.

Located in Home Moravian Church, this half-day program is divided into inside and outside activities that are child-led. They offer two, three or five day options. The classrooms are full of simple, intentional toys that provide opportunities for children to solve problems and collaborate with others! The outside space is a simple, natural playground with sand boxes, gardens and "mud kitchens" where kids can use their imaginations. All of this is covered with sunshades for the hotter part of the year. The proximity to Old Salem allows the older children to explore the many sights with the guidance of their teachers. From the perspective of a parent, the school is very intentional about providing resources to help in continuing the Montessori method at home. . I feel like I have learned as much as my children! I have two children in Salem Montessori (one in the younger toddler and one in the three to six class) and both have thrived! If a half-day program fits your schedule, this school is the best option for your children to grow and learn!

Pros: - Close by to us - Every one was VERY friendly - Pretty church, comfortable pews, projector AND bulletins - Offers traditional and more contemporary services - Starting time for traditional service was 10:45 (Yay! We're NOT morning people) Cons: - 1.5 hour service, regardless if you are having communion or not. (That is LOOOONG in my book, especially with a 6 month old infant). I prefer to keep them to about an hour. - Did not really "get" the sermon one Sunday. Sat there thinking "WHAAAAAT???" for the hour-long sermon. Maybe it was just me. After visiting this church, we attended another Lutheran church in the Winston-area to compare the two and have decided that the other church was more our style. We would recommend this church to those who like a long, traditional service with a friendly congregation and Pastor.

We enrolled our daughter at St. John's in Kindergarten and began with high hopes. By the middle of…read morefirst grade, we had to pull her out. The collapse was swift and impossible to ignore. At the end of our very first year, two out of six teachers quit, and the younger preschool classrooms were revolving doors of staff changes. One teacher was stretched so thin he was teaching gym, music, computers, and filling in across departments. That is not "well-rounded education," that is desperation by leadership. There is so much nepotism and favoritism here as well. It's uncomfortable and glaringly apparent. Leadership is the heart of the problem. The principal, barely in her thirties, is condescending, inexperienced, and unwilling to take accountability. Families raised concerns again and again, only to be brushed off. The entire experience got worse when this principal hired her Mother-in-law as the fifth grade teacher and she became a by proxy principal/drill sargent. Our daughter's first-grade teacher was visibly struggling and unprepared after only 3 years of total overall teaching experience. This created a classroom environment that was neither stable nor enriching. She was let go after only one year at this school. Meanwhile, the school is constantly begging for money. Endless fundraising campaigns, yet the standards sink lower and lower. It became painfully clear this school exists to keep the church's lights on, not to serve the children entrusted to it. We invested ourselves fully, tried to become part of this community, and watched it unravel in just 18 months. Since leaving, the flood of negative reviews has only confirmed we weren't alone. SJL school rather than addressing issues is just blocking google and facebook reviews. Unless there is a serious overhaul in leadership, this school won't make it another five years. And make no mistake: it was never just us! We know now of 3 other families that were in class with us that have also pulled their children from this school.

Leadership either has no plan to address challenges, or if they do, aren't sharing it with staff and families. Issues like racial and class segregation (see demographic data of schools like Reagan and Carver), school safety, and some of the worst teacher pay in the country continue to go unaddressed.

Homophobic, Disrespectful, Ghetto are three words to summarize this school…read more You would think because this is an art school in a rich area, people would be accepting of your sexuality. Wrong! I went to this school last year. There was a homophobic poster outside a classroom. I of course was bothered by it and requested for them to take it down. They told me "It's a research project, we can't take it down". That's bullshit. If you research lgbt you wouldn't find homophobic things on credible sources. On this poster it had said the 'causes' of homosexuality. One of them being sexual assault. That's homophobic. I was new to the school by this time and I knew just then it was going to be a bad year. Another thing that happened in this school, is I was in Mr.Jackson's Earth and Environmental class. I was an a student in my previous school for Earth Science. When I switched schools Mr.Jackson refused to accept any of my work. And he also didn't abide to my 504. I used to love Earth Science this teacher made me hate the class. I also cried everyday because I used to love school and love working on my assignments. For my assignments are the only thing I can control in my life. Mr.Jackson refused to take any of them and I cried everyday. And even cried when entering his classroom everyday. I'm so glad I moved back to my old school. Also, don't get me started on the school's assistant principal Ms.Archie. She is the worst! She is disrespectful and also tries to act as my counselor. I request to my see my counselor and Ms. archie refuses to let me have a private conversation with my counselor. Then when I request to see my counselor most of the time I end up being called to Ms. archie's office. She is not a counselor she isn't trained to be a counselor. I hated this school. Don't fucking ever go to it if you have the choice.
