Came years ago to get my hair colored. I was young at the time and didnt know better and it was an overall terrible experience. The person doing my hair kept poking me with the hair coloring brush, which hurt and irritated my scalp. When she put the hair color in, it burned! Like so bad. I mentioned it to her and she proceeded to put conditioner in the hair and told me to wait. Like an idiot I did. Finally when they removed the color and were drying my hair and such, I could see in the mirror, the woman having clumps of my hair in her hand and her dropping it on the floor. When I spoke up about it she gaslit me and told me she had nothing in her hand. It was so traumatic I never got my hair colored again. My friend's mom had a bad experience at this salon. She was given a different hair color than she asked for. When she told them the issue, they said it looked good. Staff were rude and talking and laughing to each other in their language, made her feel worse. read more

Tiffany is amazing! I tried a couple spots on/near Castro with disastrous results before coming across Aruba. I called Aruba and got an appointment with Tiffany quickly. The salon is spotlessly clean and well-maintained. Tiffany is a pro with men's haircuts, perfectly cutting my hair based on the photo I gave her and my instructions. I came here twice during the pandemic and love the services I've received so far! I asked for a simple cut with layers and was satisfied with both outcomes. Jackie did my hair and makeup for my wedding and it was FLAWLESS. My local salon recommended her when they could not help me for my wedding day (I did two ceremonies, in case you see another hair review with someone else!). While I did do a paid hair style trial, she did not require a makeup trial, which saved me money. The hair style (and trial) and makeup was by far the cheapest I found in the area. I have a difficult skin tone to match, and she did my foundation better than anyone else ever has in my life. The natural lighting was great for that, but Jackie is amazing herself. It was great because I looked good both close-up in person and in photographs, and it didn't mess up it the super hot weather. For my hair, we did a simple twist but she made it unique (and work for my face shape) with little touches and listened to my input. It took me a while to finally find a salon I liked after moving to the Bay Area but I've been going back to Jackie consistently now and will continue to do so! She is always friendly, careful and takes the time to get the cut right. Even though my cut is relatively simple, she never rushes any part of the process. I hired Jackie to do my wedding hair and I'm glad I did! Her prices are extremely reasonable when compared to the outrageous prices that independent hairstylists/ freelancers charge just because the word "wedding" is attached to "updo". We scheduled a hair trial about two weeks before and sampled two different hairstyles. I simply showed her a picture and she was able to replicate the style I was going for! On the day of, she accommodated me earlier than the salon opened. She meticulously created my updo and was very careful about securing it. The end result was exactly what I wanted, and my hairdo lasted all night!! I highly recommend Jackie as a stylist. She's also cut my hair before and I was very happy with those results, too! Jackie is the best. I have been going to her for about 15 years, and got my hair trimmed and did the japanese straightening this past weekend. It was 4 hours of hard work on Jackie's part, but my hair comes out amazing (as always). She is such a perfectionist. All covid procedures are followed, and it's a huge salon with 20 feet ceiling, and I was the only customer. The salon can easily have 2 other stations working we would still be so far spread out. All the reviews are about Jackie, so I thought I'd do a quick pitch for Leslie. Leslie saved my wedding when the person who was going to do bridal party hair ended up in the hospital the day before (that person actually made the appointment with Leslie for me). She did my hair and two bridesmaids' hair in less time than estimated, and it looked fabulous and stayed put for well over 12 hours of rigorous testing. I'd never met Leslie until the day before my wedding, but now she's my go-to gal for any fancy-dress hairstyles. She actually can get my huge jew-fro mane of hair gathered in a curly, gorgeous up-do in about 15 mins; and yes, it will last ALL night, through tons of dancing. Jackie did the makeup for my wedding (also at the last-minute); she's now done makeup for about 5 friends' weddings and will be performing the same services at one of my bridesmaid's upcoming wedding this November. She does a great job at a "you but better" enhanced natural look -- I'm sure she can do glam if you want, but I really treasure the light touch she has. My husband hates makeup, but after Jackie does her work, he'll still kiss me. That's the best review I can offer! I took off one star for the salon itself; sometimes Aruba smells like "product," and I'm pretty allergic to artificial fragrances so that can give me a headache. I started coming here earlier this year to see Sunshine and I have stuck with her since. I'm growing my hair, so I'm not in for regular monthly cuts, but when I am in there I always come out looking more fabulous than I did when I first walked in! :P Sunshine does an amazing job and I love talking to her and getting advice on my hair from her. She knows what looks good and I'm glad to say I can finally trust someone with my hair. I had my nails done here Tuesday night by joanne, as a walk in and was not impressed. I walked in and she wasn't doing anything, had all her nail supplies hidden, which struck me as weird. It's obviously a hair salon with a tacked on (and tacky) nail station. She took over an hour and a half to do my gel nails, and then tried to force both my hands into the single UV hand lamp she had. I got to work at 4pm, and at about 5pm my nails had cracked because she didn't do the layers of gel correctly/ give them enough time to dry. Now I have to go in AGAIN! to get them fixed! And I've had to deal with cracked nails for days. I would not go here again. I would not recommend people go here for nails, but the hair stylists looked like they did a good job. Also, she didn't speak English very well, which made the whole thing awkward, because I spent almost the whole time sitting there in silence. read more

After putting off getting my hair cut for far to long a friend recommended that I go see Jackie at Aruba and I am so glad that she did! She was great! I was able to get in right away and Jackie did a wonderful job of listening to my desires and also giving a bit of advise (not in a pushy annoying way). The price is awesome for the service that you get. I was even able to get my eyebrows waxed while I was there for a great price. The salon is always clean. My hair comes here to visit Sunshine. I've been going to her for about 4 yrs now, I think, and I haven't had anyone touch my hair since. That's a lie, I had a gift certif to another place so I used it. But that hair incident made it all the more clear why I shouldn't ever cheat on Sunshine. She just knows what she's doing. There's always fun convos and she offers great tips on how to maintain the look at home. I heard about this place (Jackie specifically) at a party where at least 5 other girls said that they got their hair cut. I could see that she does a great job, and was told that her prices are very reasonable. I made my appointment, and we talked for 10 minutes about my lifestyle and what I wanted my hair to do. A short time later, I had beautiful hair. Jackie showed me different ways of styling my hair too. She also recommended that i try some new hair products to make my hair healthy and full. She didn't have a small bottle for me to try, but suggested that I go to a beauty supply store to get. I was comforted in the simple fact that she recommended something but to buy it at a new place, made me want to buy it from her. I almost walked in for the haircut (called them 20 mins before) and they had a slot which already impressed me. I was tired of taking appointments and waiting weeks for them to arrive. I got my haircut from Barbara. She gave me one of the best haircut I ever got. I had long, thin and boring hair and was looking to add some style and volume to it. She got exactly the way I wanted - cool, bouncy and not thin! Great thing about this was, I could get it without using sprays, which are annoying and the high end salons always use them (and recommend them) on my hair to get the style. Jackie has been cutting my hair since I was 14 years old and has always helped me look my best. She is talented in many ways but to highlight: she listens, is friendly while staying focused on her task, delivers great service and never disappoints. People always ask me where I get my hair done and I let them know. Not only has every referral loved their cut, but each of them has continued to refer her within their own networks and Jackie always gets the same high rating I give her. I call her my hair doctor but I guess I should change that soon. Today, she shapes my eyebrows, keeps my skin looking fresh with her facials and even gave me a gorgeous french manicure after I got engaged. I don't know what I would do without her style expertise! I've been going to Jackie at Aruba for at least 6 years. I started when I lived around the corner and kept going back even after I moved to Redwood City 4 years ago. My hair is difficult to cut and I never style it, so I need a good wash and wear cut. She's been great, working with my hair and willing to try new styles that will grow out well. This place is awful. I came here for my second haircut after my hair grew back post chemo. I'm a girl. It's short. I'm insecure about it. I told my hairdresser to clean up a little around the ears but to leave it as long as possible. She hacked off all of my hair and blew it out so now I look like Pauly D. It's awful. I told her it was horrible and not what we talked about. She shrugged, said sorry, and handed me the bill anyway. I cried. I can't believe how unprofessional, insensitive, and inept the staff is at this place. read more

After reading the reviews I called to make an appt with Jackie. When I went in I was with someone else...the only reason I went was due to Jackie's yelp reviews. They said only this person was available. About halfway through my haircut a guy walks in asking for a haircut. A woman comes out of the back to cut his hair and introduces herself as Jackie. wtf? I thought that was pretty wrong. The haircut I got was fine, not great but not bad...fine. Price was good. I wouldnt dissuade someone from going here at all, but I probably won't. read more

Something has to be said about Sunshine, who is wonderful and so professional. I've gone to her for every haircut since junior year of high school (she did my prom hair for me that year, and I received no end of compliments) and stayed with her because she has a gentler, more careful touch than most stylists. She always asks how I'm doing, gives me pointers on how to care for my hair, and says goodbye with a smile; her personal sense of fashion is also top-notch and I'm sure she'd give me advice about that too, if I asked. What really mystifies me is how she manages to give me a curly updo without making me look like a poodle; no other hairdresser seems to be able to avoid it! So as long as she keeps working her magic-- and her truly sweet personality-- I'll be a faithful customer. read more

I always like to consider hairdresser as professionals who not only cut your hair as you tell them to do, but can also advise you, what type of haircut suits you. But not in every salon you receive this kind of attitude. Aruba is among those places. I did not know exactly what i want, so i asked hairdresser, unfortunately i do not know her name, to make something new, fresh and young with my hair, though keeping the length.
