But, doesn't the discount furniture store, Brighton Discount Furniture Store, also claim this prize? Someone's not telling the truth... This place is a whole lot smaller than the store across the road, which is strange really seeing as it is a self proclaimed 'Empire' of furniture. Much the same stock-wise as the other store, but just less of it. Sofas's, Drawers. Chests etc..which aren't too pricy or too quality, but again sometimes a good bet because they can also order items in, again, like the store opposite, for a £10 charge.

I have to say I have found the goods to be good looking and long lasting. I have seen some of the prices and believe them to reasonable especially for the letting agencies who buy in bulk to supply students with these goods. There are so many furniture shops on this road but I have noticed another Furniture Empire open in Hove recently which, leads me to believe that they are competing well.

Though I didn't buy anything, I was tempted. Beautiful wood that is a delight to touch and look at. The mirrors are outstanding. I was very taken with some of the unusual designs and how they were ?carved/processed. There is no doubt that we will be buying from at a later date Prices were extremely comparable and should give other local stores a run for their money!!

It gets busy for a reason though, it is popular with people because there are so many bargains. The fruit and vegetables are very good, and there are loads of brand goods selling much cheaper than usual. The chiller cabinets host milk, yogurts, ham etc. There are gifts, crockery and stationery also for sale. Upstairs, there is furniture and soft furnishings. The shop doesn't provide carrier bags, but there is normally a good supply of boxes available, and you can take a trolley round with you which you don't have to find a £1 for! The stock does seem to change quite alot though, which can be a bit disappointing if you particularly like an item and then they stop doing it, so if you can, bulk buy your favourites!

If every city had an independent, well-established second hand/ recycling centre like Shabitat the world would be a better place. For example, it recently provided me with a new bed frame for a mere £20, saving me the extra cost of shopping at a high street store. I recommend this place for students or for those not married about a bit of wear and tear. Its founding 'nothing-is-waste' philosophy is one that every community should adopt. Shabitat provides at least part of a model for sustainable living so in my opinion it's worth supporting.

I've picked up a few goodies here, from fresh fruit and veg to socks and DVDs, as well as a few kitchen bits, and it's well worth a dig around to grab a bargain. The stall holders are all friendly and approachable until you haggle; the lady with the vintage clothes stall really should cut her prices, as should one of the furniture blokes. We were looking for a chest of drawers and saw a half painted old-style set that took our fancy. £85 was the price, with unpainted inside drawers. "It's Edwardian, that", he said, shocked at my laughing about the price. It's still there now.
