I stopped here thinking of Tofu stir fry for dinner and couldn't find anything except Cauldron which doesn't even do a non crumbly one. Some Holland and Barretts have a decent selection of protein although looking for firm tofu to grill is a tall order. This one is a bit crap because they didn't even have the usual sandwiches or fake meat slices. Just a sorry freezer case. Rats.

I was pleased to find they had some on sale. I bought two bottles saving over seven pounds. The guy in this store was unusually pushy for a Holland and Barrett and tried to sell me some vitamin E that I really did not need. The Ealing store is quite small for this chain. On the occasion I was there, they had huge savings on their supplement range. I still prefer Natures Best or Fresh and Wild though.

The producers are all relatively local, many are organic, and all are happy to discuss their means of production with you (which is the main attraction of buying locally, I think). You can often get some decent fish, some excellent pies, some nice sausages (they grill some up to sell on a bun, too, if you skipped breakfast), and several good cheeses. Of course there are also breads and plenty of veg too. Roughly 10 to 12 stalls in all, probably, and they vary a bit from week to week. Edit: 10-May-08. Just back, and this market's better than ever. Did my weekly shop. Eggs, fresh bread, lamp chops, lettuce, tomatoes, venison sausages, and takeaway pork and stuffing sandwiches for lunch. Bumped the stars from 3 to 4.

It was interesting visiting an English grocery store. First of all this particular store was…read moresmaller than the ones in the United States. Also, English grocery stores aren't laid out the same. For example cookies might be in multiple locations rather than one designated "cookie aisle." Also it was interesting because you had to pay for a shopping cart. They did have a limited number of hand baskets. If they ran out of hand baskets, people would use the bags they brought and add there items into the bags. Then remove them when they got to the counter. It was nice because there weren't long lines, and they had a lot more self-serve kiosks than my local American grocery store.

I'm not quite sure how to review this place. "3.5 stars" feels like the rating I want but since…read morethat's not an option, I'll bump it up to 4 stars. The location to surrounding area is amazing. The family and I were vacationing in South Kensington and this store was ideally located. It's a grocery store that has all the essentials... and more. And by "more", I mean seemingly random stuff like an aisle of non-branded shirts... and a convenience station which apparently provides shoe repair? Item selection for things (particularly vegetables and fruits) seems a little sparse. But admittedly I'm a tourist so perhaps that's expected for the area, climate, and time of year. Checkout is slightly disorganized (again, probably a "tourist ignorance" thing). Recyclable bags are available for pickup on a rail while walking through self-checkout. There's an automated gate that requires a receipt barcode to be scanned before exit is permitted. Ultimately I think this is a store that's 90% grocery store and 10% variety store. Nothing wrong with that but it was just a little surprising.
