I've really enjoyed grabbing lunch here while I'm out and about. I'm not sure what they were like before COVID, but it's take-out only, despite having a reasonably large space. They'll usually have the orders sitting on a table near the front door, while the employees tend to hang out way in the back by the kitchen. There are lots of tables and surface space, which are basically open storage for to-go containers and things like that. As far as their sushi, it's some of the best I've had in town. I'm not an expert by any means, but I've come by plenty of times for some sushi between meals. Impromptu sushi runs like this are great for celebrating good days, or mourning bad ones. I love the packaging they use, but I usually wish I had asked for so much more soy sauce and wasabi than they gave me. There's a lot of great stuff on this menu I can't recommend enough. The entrées and other food items I'm not as crazy about. Pricewise, there are a lot of great deals. I love getting sushi and gyoza and a basic salad or miso soup with whatever I order. I will say though of all the entrées I've tried, the one that really grabbed me was the teriyaki salmon. So perfectly crispy and they really nailed it with the sauce. The chicken katsu was pretty plain. And the beef curry was incredibly bland, and the beef was pretty tough. I didn't even save my leftovers from that, it just wasn't a good choice. My girlfriend is Korean, and we usually avoid ordering Korean stuff since we make it all the time at home and can almost always make it better. I wanted to try something Korean for the review, so we threw in some Budae Jjigae on top of one of our orders. It was actually made really well. It tasted a lot like something we would have made at home, just minus most of the spice. You have to try the sushi, that's not optional. And even if the other food isn't the best in town, there's some good combos that will leave you with good variety at a great price. read more

I brought it back and the woman working said that it was smoked salmon (not what I ordered, also not supposed to be brown?) and told me that if I didn't like it that I shouldn't order it next time. Sort of mediocre sushi, but great deals on UberEats! If you're craving sushi but don't want to break the bank, Asahi is a solid option and does the job. On UberEats they have lots of deals like Buy 1, Get 1, which are super enticing. Normally I'd have given them a 2, but for their deals I gave them a 3. I got the spicy tuna rolls delivered, and they had a lot of breading/breadcrumb to take up space in the filling. (Photo is provided so you can see what I mean.) It tasted good and was fresh but I would have preferred more tuna and less breadcrumb. That being said it was packaged nicely, arrived cold (sushi, so good that it's cold), and was easy to eat with soy sauce and wasabi provided. I probably won't come to the store, as I prefer Bleu Monkey or Oishi since they're closer, so I can't comment on the service or ambiance. However if I'm craving some delivered sushi, I might order again on ubereats using their deals. read more

Ordered from Uber eats last night, and tonight went to finish the leftover chicken udon (which was sealed and refrigerated overnight) and was horrified to find a living maggot in the soup. This is inexcusable, horrific, and more than enough to make me tell everyone I know writhing a 100 mile radius to never go to this place. The food tasted fine but I guess it was the seasoning of actual parasites. I'm shocked that I haven't gotten ill (yet). Sickened that they serve mostly students to students who might not be able to afford a hospital visit from food poisoning. This place should be shut down, as this isn't an honest mistake of one little insect jumping in during the delivery but rather at least one or more ingredient is rotting in the repulsive kitchen. Came here to use a Groupon despite the unfavorable reviews (hey, I would have always wondered how this place was) and a previously failed attempt to dine here (not completely their fault, but they also don't have hours posted on their door/window). They have a light-up hours display which I've never seen on. We arrived around 12:30pm on Wednesday for lunch. We were the only customers dining the entire time. Food was decent. Service from our waitress was fine until our bill arrived. I looked over our bill to make sure they applied our Groupon. The galbi (korean bbq beef) was charged $19.95 when it was $17.95 in their menu. The waitress was standing right there so I inquired about it. She said yes that it is $17.95 in the menu, but galbi is $19.95. She says it's on their website and their printed take-out menu. Because I would order from that instead of the actual menu given to me by her. Ridiculous. Oh and they make you tell them when you order that you have a Groupon. Why do they need to know ahead of time? Other establishments do not. It always makes me feel because they'll take that into account when preparing your food and give you less. We will never be back. Sushi is my go-to food when I think of eating out. It is artistic, delicious and is something that takes too long to make at home for non-special occasions. I wanted to try their specialty rolls and was happy to see that they had many options that were very unique. I tried four rolls here and was surprised to see that they had some of the same rolls and names as another sushi spot here in Syracuse. I don't know if they share menu items or ownership. I tried the sweetheart roll, diablo roll, spicy sandwich roll and snow princess roll. The sweetheart roll was supposed to be shaped like a heart but it didn't end up looking quite like a heart or like the online images did. The sandwich roll was really fun and unique. I liked that their service was really quick for my delivery. Each roll was around $13. The diablo roll was my least favorite. It had spicy crunchy lobster salad and avocado inside, topped with white tuna and eel with spicy mayo and eel sauce. The snow princess roll was my 3rd favorite and had spicy crunchy scallop topped with white tuna on top with caviar. The sandwich roll was my 2nd favorite and it had spicy salmon, spicy shrimp, avocado and tempura flakes with spicy mayo, eel sauce and wasabi mayo on top. The sweetheart roll, despite not looking like a heart, was my favorite in flavor and it had spicy tuna wrapped in seaweed and rice surrounded with fresh tuna. Outside of sushi, they have ramen, donburi, and many Korean entrees and authentic dishes. I will try their Korean food next time I order! read more

I went here with a friend for lunch. The menu and prices were almost exactly like the ones at Oishi Sushi on Marshall St, which made me wonder if it was the same management. Service, however, was far worse and the portions significantly smaller. It was a huge disappointment. The lunchboxes were mostly rice and empty space. I ordered the teriyaki salmon, which was very small, hardly 3 oz, and my friend had the teriyaki veggies, which were just some skinny carrots and a few brocolli and onions; he also told me they were lukewarm. I even had to ask for ginger and wasabi for my sushi, which, for a "sushi place" seemed very odd. We were the only ones there and they still took nearly 20 minutes to prepare our food and it was not even warm. Seems like management needs to reassess their approach. I think it was not very good. There was no music. And when we asked if there might be some music, the server/sushi maker person responded "no." We were the only ones there, so maybe they didn't want to go to the trouble for just us. There were a lot of cardboard boxes at the table across from us with a inflatable dragon peering from behind, staring at us while we ate, as if to warn us. We didn't know if it was a good or bad sign, but the food was bad (the fish tasted seriously unfresh I couldn't eat it.) The dessert was okay but probably the ice-cream was made somewhere else. I only feel bad because I want all restaurants to succeed and there needs to be more places to go... but I hope the people who own/work there are more successful in other pursuits. read more

Had a craving for sushi (despite not being able to eat raw fish right now), Asahi was nearby. Empty when we got there at 4PM, not unusual in Syracuse. Sat in a booth by the giant wall murals (so pretty!), prompt service in taking our orders. We got an agedashi tofu starter, a couple specialty rolls and a beef teriyaki bento box. Tofu starter had a nice crunch to the outside, but not much flavor (sauce was a bit bland as well). Rolls were much better, with the rice prepared better than any other sushi place I've been to so far (including Koto @; Destiny). The fillings were bbq eel & cucumber and avocado on top, and shrimp tempura & avocado & cucumber - tasty options for non - raw rolls. The beef teriyaki box came with a few fried gyoza dumplings and a California roll, as well as rice and a few veggies - beef was thickly sliced and well sauced. No complaints from the eater. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and would come again if I have another sushi craving. :) read more

Can I just say I live near Westcott and I eat out allot. I've also had allot of sushi. At first, I was skeptical of this place. But after getting adventurous and asking what they recommend (as I always do), I would say this is one of my favorite little unknown spots in Syracuse. Now, I eat here prob 2-3 times a week, and I am a picky eater. It's actually tough to find fresh delicious seafood, quickly with a peaceful environment. If you go, you MUST TRY the kirin roll, I mean it's as if you're having sex, I mean really good sex and you fall asleep afterward and wake up naked next to someone you really like. It's like that. Next get Godzilla roll, again where am I?? Next the Dragon roll: I've forgotten my own name, I'm meandering down this side street thoroughfare next to a fruit vendor, and some little kid is asking me for change in another language... On your next visit, you've had enough sushi but you're eyeing the soups: I've had the kimchi jijae (basically a spicy soup with a Kimchi based broth), and and the Japanese ramen, let me just say, put some hot sauce on the ramen and pow! I wake up in an alley with two noodles hanging out of my lip, a full stomach, wearing a kimono and having an odd grasp of Japanese Tea customs. Also secondarily you can never go bad with the shrimp tempura roll. Next up for me: the Marshall roll (which I've heard good things about), Diablo roll (needs no explanation), Sweet heart roll (because why not), and the asahi roll.. I've had their food as a quick bite before and was actually disappointed but decided to give them another try. Lately though, I can see why the food has decent reviews. Their chicken/beef dinners come with rice, gyoza, chicken or beef and a california roll. It was around $12 and includes a choice of soup or salad as well. Pretty good value if you ask me. My friend recently got the beef teriyaki dinner which was much more flavorful than the chicken. I would definitely get the beef next time because the chicken looked unappetizing and was much too sweet. The California Roll is pretty simple and tastes normal. I've also had the Yellowtail Jalapeno roll here which they do with a pickled-ish jalapeno if you're worried about too much spice. Eel avocado and shrimp tempura have also been decent. The only thing I will say about their rolls is that they tend to fall apart. I don't really mind since I'm usually starving when I get this and it all goes to the same place! My order is always ready by the designated time and even when the place is completely empty, someone is always up front to help me. The restaurant is always spotless, no greasy tables or anything. I've been to Japan twice and know what good Japanese food tastes like. I'm afraid to say that Asahi REALLY disappointed me. I went with my Japanese boyfriend last month and ordered the Katsudon. It was tasteless to the point I had to keep on adding soy sauce to at least give it some taste. The gyoza was okay, but nothing great. I cannot say anything about the sushi since I didn't order it, but it looked like the same pieces of sushi had been going around the belt during the whole time we were there. Overall we thought the food was WAY below average. Needless to say, as a Japanese, he was very unhappy with the "Japanese" food they were serving. Another BIG thing we didn't like, and which made us uncomfortable, was that two little girls were working at the restaurant (!!!) They seemed to be about 5 and 7 and perhaps the owners' daughters. The hostess/waitress called them to clean the table, and both of them came pushing a cart to put the dirty dishes in, and did pretty much what busboys do. We were appalled. I know in some countries it may not be a big deal especially if they're just helping out in the family business, but it's definitely NOT right to make little children work. We went there for half-priced Monday, and it was a joke. Sushi options were sparse, meager, and left out for god knows how long. We went to Sakan-Ya instead (like we usually do, and it was AWESOME as always. Seriously, just go there if you want conveyor belt sushi!) Did I mention service is absolutely nonexistent? And I get that's conveyor belt so you would think that there wouldn't be much, but at least at Sanaka-Ya they ask if you want something to drink and are always attentive. Seriously, after ten minutes (we left five after) someone plops down two waters, and that was that. We tipped something small out of obligation and even regretted that. The fact that they deliver sushi was exciting, so we decided to give it one more chance, especially since there's free delivery. Over an hour has passed and....nothing. I had my birthday dinner here while passing through Syracuse to visit my dad and stepmom! The sushi was satisfying, but the service could use work. It averaged out to an A-OK experience. Most conveyor belt sushi places I've been to don't really get that creative... or maybe other people snatch the creative pieces up before they get to me. But here there was quite a mix. The belt did not convey to us very many plates with nigiri sushi; a couple of pairs of tuna pieces would roll by every so often, but that's about it. In addition to rolls of all kinds, there was sashimi over shredded carrot, dishes piled high with seaweed, and some unlucky tofu. But I'll get to the tofu. The rolls included basic tuna rolls, veggie rolls, and California rolls, along with some more elaborate ones: California roll with fish and avocado pressed over the top, shrimp tempura roll, eel roll with crab and that sweet sauce, etc. The only thing I think I hadn't seen before was the avocado and peanut roll. I didn't really care for it, but the rest of the meal was quite nice. And when my dad got the bill, he said, "Oh that's cheap." I don't know what the amount was, but he seemed pretty happy with it. When we came in, the three of us, we were offered seats at the sushi bar even though there was a booth open. In fact, the man asked a solo diner to scoot to the next seat so that we could sit at the bar. We asked for the booth instead. The man seemed reluctant. It turned out he hadn't bussed the table yet and didn't seem to want to do it right that minute. But we said we'd wait for it, and so we did. My stepmother whispered to me that he'd been kind of like that the other few times they'd been in, as well: that he seems to like to run things in ways that are good for himself and not necessarily for customers. She said she believed he was either an owner or a manager, based on previous visits. The two women who brought us water and eventually our check were friendlier, though the tofu matter kind of summed up the meal. It was a small block of tofu sitting in a bowl on the colored-rim plate. A shallow pool of sauce surrounded the bottom of the tofu, and there was garnish on top. I tried to pick it up, but a slight tilting of the dish sent the bowl sliding down and tumbling off, bouncing through my lap and landing in a plop on the floor. Oops and darnit. When a server came over we mentioned it, and she just said, "Oh that's ok, I'll clean it up." The other woman said the same thing. We were sitting in suspense (not horror movie suspense -- really just mild curiosity actually) about whether it would be included in the bill or not. It was. As my stepmother put it, they were within their rights to charge us for it -- after all, the spill was my fault and they lost a dish someone else might have taken -- but it would have been nice if they hadn't. It's one of those differences between ok service and excellent service. I'm pretty sure it was one of the cheap plates, so it was no big deal. The sushi was tasty and inexpensive (the latter according to my dad), so I'm sure my folks will be back, and perhaps I as well on a future visit. read more

We've been going there on average once every 10-12 days for several months now. Most recent visit was with the current GroupOn deal they're offering. Food was a great as ever (seems like the Fantastic special roll remains our all-time favorite, but the Asahi special roll is a close second), but I am very glad to note that the waitress (same one we've gotten almost every time) is much more efficient, quick and attentive. Again, while for us this was never a huge issue before (she did her job still), I believe that such learning and progress in management need to be rewarded -- hence the update. There were also quite a few more customers, which I hope to continue seeing. This place does deserve it. read more

No heat in restaurant, boxes of decorations sitting all over the tables, no customers and no staff to be seen anywhere. Finally a hostess emerged from the back and handed us a paper menu and walked back in the back. No greeting, no seating, no nothing.... needless to say we turned right back around and left. Meh. First, the food. Not great. Not awful, but nothing to go back for in the future. Others in my family had sushi and salmon, and their reviews were mixed. Crab was OK, nothing else really stood out. I tried the beef teriyaki and it was below average. Not much flavor - I tried to improve it with Japanese sauces we had at home, but I shouldn't have had to. We ordered delivery - it took an hour and twenty minutes and arrived lukewarm. We had a Groupon so we decided to try it out. The server took 10 minutes or so to come over, and was then so abrupt that I didn't tell her we had a Groupon. I got the tempura vegetable bento box, husband got the nabe soba. We went at 8 pm on a Saturday night and there was only one other table there. There were 5-6 dishes on the conveyor belt - we tried 3x and they were ok (nothing great, but not bad). Since nothing new came out to the belt during the hour we were there, we didn't have anything more from the belt. (The three dishes we rejected were also still going around when we left.) Nabe sobu was also good, nothing special but not bad. Bento box was a fail - tempura and goyza were greasy - they either stayed in the oil too long, or were cooked at too low a temperature. The california roll was fine, the rice was room temp. When the check came, we were told that we couldn't use it because the bento dinner was not eligible. We'll probably go back some night and get the conveyor belt sushi to use the Groupon, but unless it's dramatically better, will not be back again. read more

I visited Asahi with my niece, who is new to eating sushi. When we went in to the place, it was entirely empty. There were no customers. The only employee was the girl running the register, who emerged from the back when she heard the door. There was no sushi on the conveyor and I actually asked if they were open because it didn't look like they were. The girl seemed annoyed and said with some attitude that they were open. I bought a Groupon a few months back. I was excited to try this rather new sushi place in town. I let the Groupon expire by two days. They didn't honor the promotional value. They are within their rights to do this, however since they are still selling the same Groupon online right now, it felt a little cheap on their part. Also, the girl at the register was really rude when she explained the certificate had expired. (I didn't realize myself, most Groupon deals are good for longer than 90 days.) She seemed exasperated and annoyed when I asked whether they might honor it anyway. We ordered a Salmon, Lobster and Soft Shell Crab roll from a printed menu (I can't recall what they called it.) It took a while for them to make it, especially considering there were no other customers. When it came, the entire dish was room temperature--kind of gross. We tried it anyway. It was not terrible but nothing to rave about either. We ended up leaving without ordering anything else. We had hoped to pick our sushi off the conveyor, not order off the menu. As we were leaving they did put a small selection of sushi on the conveyor. There was a large communal jar of wasabi going around the belt with a very visible black hair in it. PLEASE DON'T ORDER FROM HERE!!!! I ordered the pick 3 sushi lunch special. It was ready when I got there. I ordered the crunchy shrimp roll, Philadelphia roll and crunchy salmon roll. Something was wrong with all three rolls! The shrimp that was used in the roll was extremely low quality shrimp that has been previously frozen. The Philadelphia roll is suppose to contain 1/3 cream cheese, 1/3 cucumber, and 1/3 of smoked salmon. BUT instead, I got 1/2 of cream cheese, a tiny small slice of cucumber and BAD BAD salmon!!!! It didnt look right and even smelled bad!!!!! OH AND WAIT, there was hair in it!!!!! I know it wasn't mine because it was wrapped in the sushi inside & different color than mines! And lastly the crunchy salmon roll was a joke! You couls barely taste the salmon, it was like a extremely light dusting of salmon. Oh I forgot about the soup that it came in because I didn't drink it after a sip. It was COLD! Like out of the fridge cold! I did open the soup, 30 mins after I got my meal but still, it shouldn't taste like it just came out of the fridge. I have been here twice now. The 1st visit provided excellent food and a new favorite, despite the poor service and looooooong wait for our food. Trip #2 was a tad disappointing, again very long wait (2 tables who were sat and ordered after us got their food waaaaaaaaaay before we did) and the rice on much of the sushi we ordered was under cooked. I plan on giving it a 3rd shot, but if the service and consistency do not improve I think the 3rd visit would have to be my last. Upside though is that the fish and preparation of it are fantastic and beyond fresh, I just dont know if the service and long wait balance that out. read more

I ordered food from here through DoorDash. The delivery itself was fine and I know that DoorDash is a completely different entity from the restaurant itself. My order that did come was not so great. My salmon and avocado roll was like grocery store sushi quality and not at all like sushi I've ordered from other sushi restaurants. I also ordered takoyaki that I was charged for but did not receive. Thankfully DoorDash reimbursed me with a credit that was worth the missing food item. I ordered mochi thinking it would be actual mochi, it turned out to be mochi ice cream which I would not have ordered since it was melted by the time I received it. The menu should have said mochi ice cream because traditional mochi is a completely different thing. My chicken katsu curry was the only good thing. I also got a miso soup which I'm assuming must have come with the entree but nothing was stated on the menu about soup coming with an entree. The miso soup was good but I would have preferred to have gotten the takoyaki that I was expecting. Not sure if I'd order from this restaurant again. I just received my delivery order and the food was absolutely disgusting and not at all what I thought it would be. I paid $35 total for two rolls after all fees and a tip. I requested a refund and they said I'd need to return the food, so I asked them to send their driver back and they refused. I have a newborn infant and can't pack her into the car to drive down there, or I would have to begin with. Literally throwing $35 in the trash. I ordered two vegetable dinner boxes from here, clearly writing in the notes "vegetables only please, no meat" because my husband and I are vegetarian. The dinners arrived with pork dumplings and california rolls. We called to let the restaurant know about it and they were rude and basically told us it was our fault... we ate what we could, but the quality was poor. This is a nice restaurant that is VERY kid and family friendly. My six year old (who has challenges out in public due to special needs) has gone here at least a dozen times and each time it has been pleasant. Often, we have seen little kids who "help" the owners or just hang out and there presence and happiness makes our little boy more at ease. Food times tend to be very fast and that helps with our son too as we don't have to wait endlessly. I have read that several of the reviews on here are negative and my husband and I are surprised by that as we have eaten here soooo many times and have always had an amazing experience. The servers are more in the background than at many other American themed restaurants but they have always been attentive and friendly--just not hovering which we like. Also, a few times our son has had some issues and they have never stared at him/us or made us feel badly. I can't say that about many places. I live on Euclid and I am sooo happy to have you guys in the neighborhood! Your food is yummy, the artwork is amazing, the prices are reasonable, the vibe is calming and your family is beautiful!! Food's great. But the delivery guy today... ! I thought I clicked "pay cash" on the grubhub app, so I handed the delivery driver $30 and walked away. He came back to return my money since I'd paid on my card! Honest, respectful and awesome food. Looove. read more

I have only had dumplings and edamame here. But let me explain--! I was excited to see that this sushi restaurant had the conveyor belt. Coming from LA, some of my favorite places to eat would be sushi served conveyor belt style. Of course, I know that sushi in Syracuse is not up to par when comparing it to places you may find in NYC or LA, so I am fairly generous in my expectations. I am often eating at Bleu Monkey and for what it is and its location, I am satisfied enough. So when we walked into the restaurant, of course we chose to sit at the conveyor belt section. We were initially intending to eat the food that was on it, but I realized that we were one of three small parties and the other two had ordered from the menu. I was wary of eating the sushi going around on that belt because who knows how long they've been spinning around without being rotated with fresh sushi. (During my entire stay there, I did not see them rotate any sushi out!) We ordered dumplings and two rolls of sushi. Edamame came out in ten minutes. The fried dumplings took thirty minutes-- ridiculously long for appetizers to come out. But, I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt here since it was a new restaurant. So an hours passes and we are fidgeting, wondering where the sushi is. We ask the waitress and she gasps in shock that we still don't have our food. She asks the sushi chef, "Where are their rolls? They ordered two!" And he just sheepishly smiles and shrugs. Then he points out a plate that was sitting high on top of his glass board. I had noticed this plate while we were waiting because it had a flashing ball with lights on it and had thought it was a display. Turns out, that was one of my sushi plates! The waitress asks me if I still want to have this plate. At that point, I was furious because a sushi restaurant should not be serving sushi that has been sitting out for an hour in the open. I would have been okay if she had suggested that we wait for the two plates to be made asap. I asked for the check instead. There is no communication amongst staff members and no one takes responsibility for their jobs. Sushi is not fresh. Wait time is ridiculous. The waitress comped us for the dumplings. My boyfriend insisted on leaving a $5 tip. We then went to Taste of India for a very late dinner and had our empty naan basket thrown across the room. But that's another story. read more

Have had sushi all over the world , went to this place as I had a coupon. I must say this place has the worst service followed by food of all the places I have had japanese food at . Entered the restaurant waiting to be seated, had to go up to a staff member myself to get seated( we were the only other table that was occupied), did not sound or appear happy that we were there, took our orders with no enthusiasm or interest, once the ordered arrived was almost slammed into the center of the table, the sushi tasted decent, the Entree was chicken hibachi which tasted as if the chicken was killed last month and was deep fried in brine with some broccoli , tasteless and horrid , asked for the cheque, she brought it declaring " 9 dollar and 50 cents" that was after the 30$ coupon we had. Food way over priced, It would almost appear that they expect us to walk in with an Amazon coupon . Service 0.5/10, food sushi was 7/10 but the entree was 0.5/10 , never go there again . read more

The sushi is awesome! The service was terrible! I have been coming here since they opened, and I actually had just ordered a huge party tray ($70.00 worth) the weekend before coming in with an amazon local deal. The waitress made it very difficult to use the amazon deal. First, she said she couldn't mark it as redeemed, next she said she wasn't able to scan it (the app was not working properly) and that I had to have the printout(website says otherwise). Finally after arguing with her for the whole dinner she took my phone in back and scanned it, my receipt showed up in the app that night, so obviously she was just trying to scam us. I was going to order a roll to go home for my husband, but after that I decided I will never order from here again! Too bad, because it's walking distance from my house and we thought it was the best sushi around. read more

I'm a frequent customer for this place. their food is decent compare to other sushi place. However if you're hungry, want something quick to eat, asahi is not the best place to oder. They usually take forever to deliver. I use grubhub to order, asahi never met the delivery estimate. Expect 2 hours long to deliver at your door. read more
