Sainsbury's is one of the 4 big supermarkets in the country. Originally opened in 1869 the first store in Drury Lane soon paved the way to over 500 supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide. The new store in Selby seems to be doing well at the moment. Tesco prices have got silly; Morrison is good for offers, leaving Aldi the winner but with little choice. By default that leaves Sainsbury's in quite a good position. I like Sainsbury's ethics, their carrier bags are not dished out, and their stand on free-range products leads the way. They have improved their basic range and I like the meal planners and recipes.oh and Jamie Oliver's a bit fit too :)

Oh Waitrose. My…read moreolder brother seems to think that I've got my priorities wrong as a relatively new graduate who is a little bit unemployed shopping in Waitrose. But he is missing the finer supermarket shopping experiences in life. It is often accused as the middle class, overpriced spot to shop. Whilst there are your fair share of fancy cars in the car park and mummy's debating which brand of gourmet baby food to buy it is one of the gooduns'. As supermarkets go Waitrose seem to treat their staff well, support local community, have a wider range of products available and all in all appear a friendlier place to shop. Split your shopping between here and some local places for fresh produce and I don't mind spending a few extra pennies for some happier faces.

With your first order you get a free bottle of wine and a welcome pack. They also send you money off coupons for your next three orders. They do substitute your items if they don't have what you want in stock, but when the driver arrives he goes over them with you - they allow you to inspect it and if you don't like it they will take it back and give you a refund. I think you can select not to receive substitutions though. The Waitrose own brand is of good quality so it's not an issue. I don't think it's all that snooty or expensive. I think it depends on the choices you make when you shop. Alot of grocery stores are doing price matching these days so I think aside from shopping at Asda its comparable to shopping at Marks or Sainsburys.

Headingley must have a much higher than average number of younger residents including many…read morestudents. Amongst these groups there are an above average number of Vegans. It is therefore surprising that the main Sainsbury's store in Headingley has such a small poor and limited range of vegan items.

Having now lived in Headingley for a few years I used to visit Sainsburys for my weekly shop, even…read morebefore it was a Sainsburys - when it was Somerfield. Essentially, there isn't a great deal of difference between the two companies in terms of my weekly shop. There are a few items that were most definitely cheaper when it was a Somerfield - smoked mackerel, some of the fruit and veg items etc - but there are some Sainsburys features that were not there and are quite good. One of those is the 'feed your family for a fiver' leaflets, which are really quite useful! I picked up one for lamb pitas, which is really good. It's cheap, tasty, different and of course I've embellished the recipe in my own way to make it suit me. The staff seem to be the same staff as before, which is great, as they have always been patient and helpful. They have new 'self service' counters, which can be useful if you only have a couple of things and don't wish to queue. They can also give you the rage of Zeus when they accuse you of an "unexpected item in the bagging area!" so use with caution. All in all, I'll always shop here as it is most convenient for me to access. But it's not an unpleasant place to shop for your goods so I'm happy.

You may wonder why I am reviewing a Morrisons as most people will know what they are and what they…read moresell. If you have ever watched a TV, especially around Christmas time, it is very likely you will have seen the advert. Fake snow, big cakes, Denise Van Outen or 'that bloke from Top Gear' stroll around Morrisons looking glossy whilst their signature Take That tune blasts out in the background. If not you will probably have seen one of their 420 stores throughout the UK. They are big, garish and bright yellow. That's the one. I shop in the Morrisons in the city centre on occasion, due to their very low prices and the fact that they stock pretty much everything. But recently I visited the Hunslet branch. The difference, they have a cafe! I was starving. Having had no breakfast whatsoever, my stomach was grumbling like a grumpy old man who had lost his slippers. Food was needed fast. They had a selection of sandwiches, but they were cut into triangles and laid onto cling film covered plates with a handful of crisps and salad. Fair enough, but odd as I expected the usual packaged sarnie. They were also quite sweaty looking, with condensation on the inside of the cling film. Not very enticing. So, I thought, hot food. YUM. But I couldn't see a menu. This is how hot food works. 1. Go to counter one with a display of pictures of various breakfast type hot food. (Sausages, beans, bacon, eggs, toast etc) 2. Choose what you want and tell the lady, she then gives you a green plastic disk with your number on it. (I chose scrambled eggs on toast) 3. Go past coffee machine, grab coffee if required. 4. Go to till, hand second lady green plastic disk with number on, pay and receive a red plastic disk with number on. 5. Find a table, put red plastic disk in the flag-post-thing and await your food. Right. Done. Sip coffee. Extremely milky with hardly any actual coffee in it, cue sleepy effect instead of caffeine buzz required. Bummer. The food arrives within five minutes. Rubbery egg, soggy toast and tasteless tomatoes. Double bummer. Satisfaction: None Wallet: down £3.80

I'm really not a fan or Morrisons as it is...the drab decor, the horrible floor that looks…read morelike...er, i'll not even say it. Anyway, my friend and I had a full english breakfast from here and like Alexandra said...rubbery eggs, soggy toast, really unusually hard stale beans....it just wasn't nice. I can't say much for the staff either, they're not very polite or accommodating and seem to be utterly bored of their jobs. Cheap but definitely not cheerful. Spend your money elsewhere.

A long standing Morrisons supermarket at the top of yeadon high street…read more Very good sized car park (though I have noticed a bit of a struggle during busy times). And a table service cafe too. The supermarket is nicely laid out, you get the smell of baking bread and cooking chickens, but actually enter through the fruit and veg section. Full of the usual Morrison's value and special offers. It has a full range of Market street counters (fish bar, salad, chickens & pies, butchery bakery and cakes) all with staff on hand to help with any queries. My only real annoyance is that this shop has a separate wines and spirits section and an inconsistant policy as to whether you can pay for all your shopping together or if you have to queue twice. The only time this is good is if you go in for booze alone, as you don't get stuck behind a couple of trolley loads at the checkout!

Morrisons in Yeadon is a fair sized super market with plenty of free parking and lots of facilities…read morein the store such as a cafe, coin changer, good clean loos and a bakery and chicken rotisserie. The shop is airy light and clean and the food is good value and high in quality. The prices are very good, I would say of the big 4 supermarkets they are the cheapest and they do offer a lot of buy one get one free offers and other deals which is good. The staff are very nice and helpful, and the atmosphere of the supermarket is good, I would say this one is maybe a little more old fashioned but that is no bad thing. Only down side is that it doesn't sell clothes like the biger supermarkets do but food and home wise it is very good and a great place to do your weekly or monthly shop without breaking the bank.

Nasty, rude owner who has blatently lied claiming i was `repeatedly using the sprays` without…read morepaying for them. This is a lie, it happened once, i was spoken to it by the manager and a member of staff on seperate occasions and it never happened. The owner is a compulsive lier, and has tried to publicly make me out to be a thief. Avoid!

The Londis on Woodhouse St looks a little run down, but don't let that put you off. When traipsing…read moreback from the doctors and in serious need of a jacket potato, beans, and cheese I decided to head in. The shop is quite big with all your usual tins, cans, juices, fruit, veg, biscuits, cheese, milk, and papers. But they also have a Post Office at the back, a shelf of childrens toys AND a vast selection of booze. The alcohol selection here is much more fruitful than your usual Grocery or Newsagent. The lady behind the counter was very kind and helpful when I asked for directions, finishing her elaborate hand movements with "You take care love" in that always comforting Northern accent.

JB Wilkinson & Sons, it seems, are not quite the indie local little butchers that I had assumed…read morethey were - if you take a peek at their website you will come to realise that they have branches all about Leeds and Yorkshire! That's not to say it's a bad thing, by all means it suggests that they are popular, but judging by the people of Otley this particular branch isn't quite the favourite. Nevertheless, I am not one to sniff at the underdog, more over I am the one who will visit them more so as it often means less queuing! It's always worth a try, after all if the service is no good you've only the need to find that out once. JB Wilkinson & Sons of Otley certainly isn't bad as a local butchers. They appear to have as much of an array of bits as any other butchers, with lots of tasty cuts on show from proper Sunday lunch meats to more day to day bacon style choices. One thing that I thought was particularly cool was that you could purchase ready made mixes for stir fry - thai chicken, pork and beef stir fry mixes for about £4 per lb. That's not too bad as a one off now is it? It was a little disappointing to see things such as Colemans sauce packets on sale, I like to get my indie jams, sauces and chutneys from a local butcher, as opposed to some big company ready made that is packed with preservatives. Still, as I say, not bad for meat and such - especially if you want to miss the queue at Weegmans!

The units in Headingley seem to change that often that I don't really even remember what it used to…read morebe here before Morrisons. Likely a charity shop or something, I guess, since there are so many of those. Anyway, Morrisons crept up sometime last year. It's a lot smaller than the Sainsbo branch, but I'm sure since its arrival Sainsbo have extended their hours by an hour to match Mozza. (11pm.) I've shopped in there once or twice but there seems to be little advantage in it -- it's smaller, so there's less variety, and I'm sure the fruit I bought was more expensive than next door. Since Sainsbury's has now matched their hours, there really isn't any reason except for items you know to be cheaper, or to save time if Sainsbury's is hella busy. (Don't get me wrong, I'm no Sainsbury's fan, it just seems like there's more bang for your buck an' that.) The staff are pretty friendly, they've two serve yourself tills and two counter tills, and there's small selection of everything you'd need for a mini shop.
