(What world is this that I am able to make unconscious assumptions about the kind of Tesco I'm in? Ugh.) Anyway. It's bigger and better-stocked. That's why I thought it was a Metro. It's also pretty tidy most of the time and last time I went in, there was a nice young man from Stoats giving away free samples, which was fun. The tills are fairly well laid-out... I don't really know what else there is to say. It's a Tesco, and just a Tesco, and it's got nothing particularly out of the ordinary to recommend it, but it's juuuuuust fine.

This is the biggest super market you will find around Haymarket and West End, I would say. The bakery part is always worth a visit, along with the hot food section for lunches. Weekly offers are also worth a visit! Amazon has placed a locker area, where you can pick up your order from there rather than wondering if it will fit through your door at home or having to pick it up from a post office another day.

During term time I live within a thirty second walk of this place and so use it at least four times a week for the essentials. Their main selling point has to be their freshly baked bread which, although not cheap, is certainly delicious. My favourite has to be their French loaf which makes for a great lunch-time baguette. They also sell a huge selection of curry sauces, frozen meals, fresh chicken, beef and cold meat and a range of quality fruit and vegetables. There's a cash machine in the corner as well, so there's not much more you could want (except lower prices).

Otherwise, we like convenience stores like this during our travels for items like bottled water and such.

On my second day, first morning, in Scotland (6 July 2019), I was looking to get a few food items for the day before picking up my rental car and was aware of this store as I passed it the evening before on foot when going to get dinner. The store was bigger on the inside than it looked like on the outside. Sections were well set up and easy to navigate and peruse. I was particularly impressed with a bakery/fresh-baked breads section at the back of the store. In the United States of America, the stores of an equivalent nature might have hot dogs or donuts available, but not fresh-made bread. I got a few items and went through self check out. It took me a couple tries to get the payment right, but everything worked. Worker(s) were friendly.

We were pleased with the selections of everything from cheeses to ales and every snack in between. Upon checkout we were curious about the irn-bru in the bin next to the counter so we asked the lady who was checking folks out. She was sweet and explained that it was just something we had to try but it was too hard to explain. Enough said - we brought one home to try! They had lots of clearanced out items near the checkout as well so we grabbed a bag of crisps to go with our new local finds. Great shop - and good customer service!

I'm in two minds about this place…read more Scotmids in general have decent stock, including plenty of GF and lactose free items and they give discount vouchers every now and then which often give £2 off if you spend over £10 (not too shabby!). There's a decent range of cheeses, often including some which are locally made. I also like their own brand stuff, which is decent quality. This particular Scotmid has recently had a revamp and now includes an area with fresh baked bread, a vegetable rack with your 'not your usuals' next to all the 'normal' vegetables, a pastry/pie counter next to the tills and a self-service check out area. All these things make me think that Scotmid wants to be more 'Waitrose' than 'Tesco Express'. However, they are pricier than Tesco, likely because most of what they sell is sourced locally. It sometimes surprises me how quickly the price goes from a few quid to the average £13-17 I spend here. I can live with the price, I don't have to shop here after all, but one thing that kind of makes me lose patience is the staff. On the tills that staff are wonderful, they ask you about your day and are always lovely, fostering a sense of community in the local shop. In the aisles however the staff have a habit of having personal conversations (not 'guess what I found my husband doing last night?' but more 'I was watching Breaking Bad and I couldn't believe the bit where the thing happened!') and you occasionally feel you are intruding if you need to reach between them to grab your milk. This is probably a consequence of the friendly atmosphere and general friendliness about the place but it has tried my patience more than once! Overall though I like this Scotmid and I'm glad it's my local!

The selection is mixed, they have a great to-go food and drink section, which includes a Costa Express machine, however, the stock of essentials and groceries wasn't too good while being at the usual inflated convenience store pricing. The layout of the store was easy enough to follow, but due to the presence of security gates, you will need to go through the checkout area even if you don't buy anything, which can be a pain, especially if there's a big queue and the item you wanted to purchase is out of stock. There are a couple of hotels nearby, so this can be a great stop to get a couple of things to take back to your room, without having to travel far, but better alternatives for sure around the city. 3*
