They have a great program for children who need a little extra help too. The drop off/pick up here is simple. They are very involved in the community too. They have an edible garden that they grow veggies in. This school needs an updated playground and at one time, Lowe's and 11Alive said that they were upgrading it, but I am not sure why they have not as of yet. Hmmm.... I highly recommend this school!

I don't go to this school lolz =P And I don't even have kids yet…read more But, I live in the area and my sister, who does have a lil girl, is looking to move closer to me (Yay! =)), and wanted to check out some of the elementary schools in the local area. She's not looking to move til the end of summer, but getting her ducks in a row early. :) Anyway, I went with her on a tour of the school to check it out. It's pretty nice. It's definitely an older school, but I kinda like that - it gives it a nice old-world feel of the days when innocence was a bit more the norm. All of the teachers and staff seemed so nice and friendly and they were all very knowledgeable. The way it's built, there's a cute little courtyard in the middle of the school and that's really neat. They have a big cafeteria, with one of those stages up front :) A nice big gym in its own building for the kiddies to play their games and exercise. A very nice little library. The outside is pretty huge out back, with some basketball courts and a nice wooded area. The playground was pretty lacking though. But when I asked about it, they said that actually they are building a new, better and bigger one this very month! They have a dedicated system for disadvantaged children and they do participate in the pre-K lottery thing, which my sis was really excited about =P. It's literally right in the middle of a big neighborhood (it borders on mine), so it's REALLY convenient if you live in the area. And of course being Asian, we were concerned about racial diversity - but no need - walking around we saw students from everywhere, so that's really nice too.

i don't like this school the staff are mean and rude, they don't teach the students well and they…read morethink less of the children and favor the teacher's kids i think this is very unfair. every child should be loved the same. they treat the bad kids like trash because they are bad kids. what they need to do is talk to them and ask them whats wrong. the school keeps asking for too much money. and parents cant afford to keep paying for they're kids. and when the student doesn't pay the teacher scolds them and leaves them in the classroom. this is bad and i feel bad for the students.

The school facilities were pretty nice - walls decorated with school decorations and students' works. Very colorful setting that encouraged a safe space for learning. For a Saturday morning program, I was very impressed by the involvement and presence of the school administration. Teachers and the principal arrived on time, ready to engage with the students. Good teachers really don't get enough praise for their dedication. Students also arrived by school bus, which is a reliable and efficient way for students to get to a school program on the weekends - so cool! The thing that really topped it off for me was the diversity in the student population. The student body represents 31 different countries... yes THIRTY ONE countries. Most are children of refugees and come without an English background. You definitely would not be able to tell the latter because these kids were engaged throughout the program, displaying proficient in learning/comprehension. I am all for children growing up with diverse group of friends and learning cultural values early on in life. It's something that won't do harm in their future. My daughter loves the way the teachers teach and allow you to express your thoughts and approach to life. Yes, Galloway has an open way to accept everyone. I think it's great because some of the other independent schools don't. Minority students have a hard time adjusting to the culture/environment of the school. The administration listen to everyone whether you have money or not. If you are a family that gets involved and take pride in your children education, they listen to your comments and suggestions. Some schools don't listen to anything the parents have to say because it's tradition. "This is the way we always did it speech" comes after you make a suggestion about the school. At Galloway, the community helps shape the educational climate. I love it. The new concepts and theme of our school explains who we are. At Galloway, we do 4d learning which touches four areas which are daring, deliberate, dynamic, and discovery. if you don't want your children to explore learning and not do traditional learning. Galloway is for you!

I went to Galloway from K-12, so this comes from a very long firsthand experience. There are…read moredefinitely positives: it is a kind, supportive environment, the teachers generally care, and the school does a good job making students feel seen as individuals. I understand why a lot of Buckhead families are drawn to it. That said, looking back as an adult, I do not feel like it prepared me especially well for real life. There was a lot of emphasis on "be your best self," which sounds good on paper, but in my experience there was less emphasis on discipline, toughness, accountability, and the kind of academic rigor that actually helps once you leave a protected school environment. It helped get me into Alabama, but I was not especially well prepared once I got there, and that became obvious pretty quickly. Now I work in residential real estate, and while I do fine, it is not exactly the kind of challenging or deeply fulfilling professional path I once thought a school like Galloway was preparing me for. It is a very relationship-driven job with long hours, and if I am being honest, a lot of where I landed had more to do with family connections than with any real edge the school gave me. That is the part I think prospective families should think about. Galloway was good at making students feel comfortable and affirmed. I am less convinced it was good at pushing them hard enough to thrive on their own later.

The community is strong and encouraging. We've been pleased with the level of academic rigor and the opportunities it has given our kids to explore new opportunities and ideas. They have been able to participate in sports, perform in plays, read wonderful books, try hands-on science experiments, and develop a deeper appreciation of art, poetry, music, and so many other things. If your child excels in math or science, I would not recommend this school since they don't have a large enough class size to create varying levels of classes. The history and language arts curriculum is very creative, I think the chronological time line and incorporating both literature, history, and biblical studies together worked very effectively. However, a school should be able to excel in all subjects rather than just a few, since a well rounded education, especially at a young age, can help children discover their passions. After I transferred from Intown to my public school, I realized that I was very behind in math. I went into the accelerated program at the public schools and I found the classes much more rigorous and I was able to develop a much better work ethic for college. Smaller school also meant less club varieties too.

My children and I love Henderson Mill Elementary. I'll try to detail specifically why:…read more 1. Academics, of course. A. As the first STEM-certified elementary school in Georgia, HMES has a strong focus in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This is implemented in a variety of ways, including a weekly science class, LEGO engineering projects, a student-produced morning news program, a trout-hatchery program with field trips to release the small fry into the Chattahoochee, and coding in the classroom, among many other opportunities. B. Literacy is also a strong focus, using the Fountas & Pinnell system (the gold standard) and with small group tutoring every morning before school starts. Students read both fiction and non-fiction, integrating other acedemic fields into their literacy learning. My children are consistently challenged, but have also received support when they have needed it. C. Homework is a little more intensive than neighboring schools, but is age-appropriate and better prepares students for their experience in middle school. 2. Daily P.E. I can't overstate the importance of this. Every child from Kindergarten to 5th Grade has quality exercise every day. They run laps and do squat thrusts (aka burpees.) The exercise does amazing things for their focus during class and their happiness in general. They also have 15-20 minutes of recess daily. 3. The arts. The full-time music and art teachers are phenomenal in their fields, seeing each student once a week. They also work with the science teacher to implement STEAM Wednesdays, in which the children work on projects incorporating the arts into the STEM fields through innovative projects. 4. Title I. Henderson Mill is a Title I school, which means that it receives federal funds due to the proportion of its children who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. These funds are primarily used to pay the salaries of additional excellent teachers, which helps keep class sizes small and provides that additional academic support. Serving children from a wide array of backgrounds, the school does a fantastic job of supporting and engaging all of its students. 5. The students. Henderson Mill has an amazingly diverse population of students from all over the world. A wide variety of cultures and backgrounds are represented, providing children with the opportunity to learn from one another. I've heard from high school students that this early interaction leads to a better, more integrated experience in the later grades than students from less diverse schools encounter. 6. The culture. Henderson Mill Elementary is an amazing place for children to grow up. It's the kind of place where, following a weeknight event, after the students and most parents have gone home, employees linger happily because they love it there. Children pick up on that and think of the school as a happy place. The teachers, the staff, the administration -- the more you get to know them, the better and better they get. The smiles are contagious. I kinda can't believe I spent this long writing a Yelp review for a public school, but that should illustrate how much I love the place.
