In Ashton Court Estate you will find this pitch and put course on a hillside. It takes a bit of finding. At the main entrance (that is, where the gatehouse is, not down in the hill around Bedminster) go straight along the road and then take the first right, going up the hill. You'll come to a little car park and a slightly desolate looking hut. The hut is where you can hire clubs and balls (remember not to smack it into the bushes...) and get putting. It's run by the council, which means its a) cheap and b) not full of stuffy old men, the two usual vices of a golf course. Give your ball a thwack and follow it round the course, nobodies going to judge you. The only downside I can think of is that things can get a bit congested, especially if the weather is even vaguely nice. You may have to wait a little while, or have people queueing up behind you, to use one of the holes. Making golf a bit less of the pursuit of old men at country clubs, the pitch and put golf course is a great way for those of us that think golf looks like a lark to give it a try. read more

I used to hate golf until two of my mates practically dragged me across the bridge to Ashton Court for some pitch and putt. What can I say? I was almost instantly seduced by the satisfying feeling of smacking a little ball as hard as you can with a massive piece of metal, and the faraway sound of ball on deer. It's great value - £6.50 gets you 18 holes and a great view across the whole of Brizzle and beyond on a fine day. The only problem is that, when the sun's out, it can get pretty busy, and there's nothing guaranteed to give an amateur the yips more than a queue of people staring and tutting as you continually swing and miss at the ball off the tee. One tip: the course on the Bristol side of AC offers more variation, and there's even one par five hole where you can get your wood out and give it a real thrashing. read more

I've been Dog sitting or a friend the last few days and Duke being a Husky-needs a LOT of walking. Yesterday was our last day together so i took him, a ball and my wellies to Ashton court. It's no secret i enjoy a good country estate surrounded by lush fields and tree's, i've even been known to hug a tree or two when no one's looking-though i keep denying i'm a bit of a hippy but i confess, i am! There's hours of walking and some of the trees are 2+ generations old which i love, seeing something older than anyone i know rooted and growing strong before and after me is quite something. During the summer month's they have a little train that chugs around the estate, horse riders are welcome year round, dog walkers, they have a golf course, great for runners, obviously the house as well not to mention the wicked events they have- balloon fiesta is a definite time for any true Bristolian to get excited about! Parking is only a couple of quid for the whole day-bargin! You don't have to just go here in perfect weather mind you, a lot of the trails are covered over head by tree's i didn't get to soaked...besides-it's only water! Duke had a blast, esp jumping head first into the giant puddles and mini rivers that run around the forest, Needless to say he was in the dog house (hahahahahaha) We did loose his ball though-i have the arm of an American baseball player it seems BUT we did find a whole bunch of fallen branches that made a good substitute and Duke found one he particularly loved and wouldn't put down. By all accounts he buried it in the garden when he got home....*dogs logic. Ashton court does benefit from being a stones throw away from Bristol's Fantastic suspension bridge and some decent pubs in Clifton Village. I've been on many a dog walk/ picnic/ event at Ashton court and it's really one of the handful of places that really make Bristol the great city that it is. Almost makes your proud xx read more

Bristol is so lucky to have this wonderful slice of nature on the outskirts of the city. I first came to Ashton Court for the Ashton Court Festival which was great fun but I was rather appalled at people throwing their rubbish everywhere. Ashton Court is a deer park, it appalls me that people don't respect that. Hopefully the Summer Nights festival planned to take place this summer will be a bit more civilised. It was good to see recycling bins from Bristol City council dotted around everywhere for the Balloon Fiesta. Parking here is free but not for events like the Balloon Fiesta when you pay a hefty price to park your car here. Also beware of parking either side of the road, traffic wardens were going around here slapping tickets on everything. My favourite time to go to Ashton Court is for a pre big breakfast walk on a Saturday morning. It has beautiful walks, some interesting grafitti near the golf course. Its popular with walkers, joggers, families and mountain bikers. There is also a cafe and a restaurant in the old stables. read more

This is a fantastic green, open space for Bristol covering some 850 acres, made up of lush meadows and woodlands of ancient oak trees - all a Grade 2 registered landscape. There are views from Ashton Court right across the city to the small village of Dundry which sits right on the edge of south Bristol - and beyond to the surrounding Cotswold Hills. It's an important area for supporting wildlife, and during your visit you're quite likely to spot deer grazing somewhere on the estate. Visitors can explore both the woodlands and meadows, and dogs are allowed - or you can ride the UK's first urban mountain bike trail. There's also a visitor centre, a café, some toilets, an orienteering course, a golf course and even a miniature railway - and the estate also hosts some big Bristol outdoor events. read more

When I first came here many years ago, I was with a big group of people that met up here to have tea at the cafe, and only wandered the Ashton Court Mansion's gardens for abit before leaving. Little did I know how much more this estate held. More recently, I biked here with some of my friends, and when you get to it, it's quite a sudden transition from busy roads to vast green open spaces (maybe it transitions faster for me because of the bicycle factor). It is simply a stunning place to clear your mind, have a walk with the family, and be completely surrounded by peace and calm. If a multitude of trees aren't enough, there's a bit with lots of deer, simply prancing around, being their lovely selves. It is a wonderful slice of paradise right next to the busy paced city center. Aren't we lucky. read more

Oh gorgeous expanse of green overseeing our fine city, how you brighten my very existence! Ashton Court is grassy and tree-line and hilly - the perfect antidote to when concrete days in Bristol just get you down (it doesn't happen that often - but sometimes you just crave summat natural beneath your feet!) The parkland rolls to the edge of the river, as far down as Bower Ashton and almost touches the Suspension bridge - great for dogs (on leads near wildlife areas), kites, bikes and joggers. I was walking through a wooded glade and stumbled upon some of the park's very own family of red deer, almost glowing in the upper pasture. read more

A fantastically large open space with wonderful views of Bristol. The Ashton Court Estate is certainly one of Bristol's highlights and a welcome relief from the hustle bustle of city life. During the summer is when it's at it's best and is a great place to go for a picnic, to fly a kite or even just for a walk. There's also an 18 hole pitch and putt course on site, which is pretty good and well worth the money at just under £7. As it's a large green space that everybody knows about it can get quite busy when the sun is out, but the grounds are so large that it never really becomes an issue and it actually gives the place a friendly "isn't life wonderful" kind of atmosphere to be honest. read more

Absolutely stunning area of Bristol. I would recommend visiting in either Spring time when the Bluebells are out, or at Autumn where the trees are shedding their leaves and paint an incredible picture of colour. There are plenty of woodland walks to get lost in and if you avoid the summer holidays you could easily not bump into anyone (aahh bliss!). Bit hard to get to if you don't own a car, but worth a trip if you can. read more

One of Bristol's many surrounding green spaces, Ashton Court Estate is one of the city's most appealing places for an afternoon stroll, dog walk or (for the more athletic among us) jog. Beautifully kept and filled with flowers in springtime, Ashton Court is like a tamer version of neighbouring Leigh Woods.It's pretty extensive as well so hidden corners are easy to find as well. There are even deer roaming round the estate so keep an eye open for them. The court itself is also a popular choice for formal event hire for weddings and such like. I had a couple of great balls held there at uni and can testify to what an atmosphere location it is. Four star rating only because it's not the easiest of places to get to, this place is a fair old walk even from Clifton. read more

I went here for a two day conference not knowing what to expect. I stayed in Clifton, and decided to take an early morning walk to the venue. Firstly, the quaint little village. Secondly, the suspension bridge. Thirdly, going through some large gates into a very large beautiful park. Walking down a rolling hill, through a deer enclosure. All this in perfect weather. I really wish every walk to work could be like this. And as for the serious stuff, the staff were amazing, the break time biscuits INCREDIBLE, and they did a wonderful job of serving up over a hundred people in good time. The fancy sit down dinner was a bit basic (tomato soup, chicken in cream sauce with potatoes and seasonal veg), but that's understandable considering the number they had to cater for. The only drawback is that the park is public, and so in the conference room it's possible to have members of the public walking past the windows making lots of noise. I should imagine this is similar for weddings too, and it isn't possible to prevent strangers from appearing in shots taken in the garden. I've decided I'm going to go back soon, and this time for pleasure so I can take my time. read more

What a gem. Ashton Court is a wondrous estate smack bang next to Bristol, you can walk out over the suspension bridge and ten minutes later you are confronted with archaic imposing gates that beg you to wander in and leave the rest of the world behind on the A road. If you like a bit of solitude, and I mean proper 'you time' solitude then get into Ashton Court sooner rather than later and embrace all it has to give., you wont regret it for a second. read more

Just a few miles from the centre of Bristol, the Ashton Court estate is one of the largest and most beautiful green spaces in the city. At the top of the hilly estate is a public golf course, and a large flat area frequently used for pony club rallies, whilst the bottom of the hill is dominated by the mansion and its gardens. On both sides are two deer parks, one for Red deer, the other for Fallow, which are open to walkers, but dogs must be kept on leads. Left to the people of Bristol by the last of the Greville Smythe family, the space is now used for festivals and events, the most famous of which is the annual Balloon Fiesta. During the rest of the year, the court is a favourite with joggers, cyclists and dog walkers. The mansion house can be hired as an unusual location for a wedding reception, but bear in mind that the court is public land, and so there will be others wandering around during your "special day". On sunny weekends, the place is absolutely packed, so if you like to appreciate natural surroundings in peace and quiet, you should go during the week, or when the weather is bad. The dog walkers will of course be there in all weathers, so you will always encounter dogs, but you may perhaps see something a little less usual, as there is at least one local family who regularly walk their leopard cats here. read more

When you are sitting on the slopes of Ashton Court, eating an ice cream and looking out over the city, there is simply no better place to be. And the beauty of this place is that it's ours, yours and mine, because it was bestowed to us as a gift and is run by Bristol Council. It is a gigantic tragedy that the annual music festival no longer happens because it was a fantastic event which really involved people of all ages from all over Bristol and was something of which this city could be proud. And it just doesn't look like it will be back any time soon. But Ashton Court is still one of my favourite spots, from bike rides to long walks, to watching the deer, to slurping ice creams. And in the summer they sometimes have incredible outdoor theatre on the lawns outside the big house, usually by a company called Heartbreak Productions. read more

This is a great place to go and enjoy a care free game of golf. The par 3 course has some nice holes ranging from around 80 yards to around 200 yards in distance. The club consisists of two courses with the lower course being significantly more interesting and beautifull. You are able just to show up and pay just £6 for adults with cheaper fees given to students and children. You dont have to be great to play here and there is no dress code. So whatever your level, you can enjoy a cheap round, that will take around 2 hours depending on congestion. deffinately worth a visit. read more
