I didn't want to slap together a few words of encouragement and leave it at that... I want to convey to you just how wonderful this place is. The first thing that strikes you about the Velo Bright is how much it seems to offer in such a small area. Renovated and expanded this place is warm, stylish and inviting. We were given a code (ala AirBnB style) and this gave us 24 hour access to the building and our room. Nice and easy. Our first room (more on that later) was small but functional, warm and very stylish. But it was the bathroom and shower that blew us away and you will be no different. No picture will do this shower justice and it is very clear that a lot of care and attention has been poured into the design and finish of this boudoir. Flourishes like tiles that extend up the wall and over your head, clearly not necessary, make it obvious that this was designed to be enjoyed and as well as be functional. We made our way to the bar and was struck by how warm and cosy it was what with its use of wood and exposed beams. The beautiful open fire and plush furnishings also helped us enjoy a beer that was, after a long drive, essential. It was then we were approach by the manager who, seemingly for no reason, offered to upgrade our room simply because we were the only guests that night. This second room was much larger with a living area as well as bedroom but an even bigger version of the incredible shower from the previous room. This room went onto enhance an already wonderful experience. Dinner at the restaurant was very since and the staff friendly and accomodating. But it was when we went to leave that the bar manager struck up a conversation that lead him to open the whisky bar - just for us - so we could enjoy a whiskey in private. The staff at the Velo are friendly and make you feel at home and while it could be argued this is what they are supposed to do, it is their flexibility and imagination that make this a very special place. They go outside the square to give you the best possible stay whether that be for one night or ten. I would happily drive to Bright just to stay there again... it really was that special.

It is on the same property as the home of owners Julie and Damian, although you really don't notice their presence. Most enjoyable about the location is the view of the alpaca field that both houses share. Three Alpacas live there and it is remarkably relaxing to stretch out on the coach with the log fire burning and just watch the animals wander around. The owners truly think of everything at this retreat. Firewood is pre-chopped prior to your arrival, a family size box of maltesers await you on the bench as well as a wide selection of breakfast food, appetizers and wine. The house sleeps up to six with two double beds and two singles. The main bedroom has a king size bed with private ensuite while the other two rooms share a small bathroom. There is a rec room designed for kids that comes equipped with toys, an x-box and television. The main lounge is spacious and is open plan in the same area as the kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with all the latest technology and it is a joy to cook in. The retreat costs between $235 and $245 per night with a $500 bond required before arrival. There is also the option to have breakfast supplies delivered daily for extended stays. The retreat is clean, warm and comfortable and the hosts un-encroaching and friendly. Highly recommended.

But the room contains a full size bed, 2 end tables and a towel rack on the door. No closet, no hangers no mirror, no lights except the one on the ceiling, no chair. Hard pillows unpleasant. Tried to pull the heavy drapes to cover the window and one came down. Haven't seen a single staff person since I checked in a day ago, so no one to easily call about putting the drape back up. On the other hand the location is nice. And the price is cheap.

The building is definitely authentic and true to its roots, but is in serious need of sound proofing! I'd love this place if I was a kid, it's full of hidden passage ways, weird rooms and creaking noises. We were here for a wedding. There is a lovely garden surrounding the building for photos and the reception area did a very good job of catering for our crew. If I was to stay again, I'd bring earplugs, as the sound travels, but otherwise a gorgeous venue in the country.

The main drinking space isn't the biggest, but noticeably more lush than others you will find in Beechworth. Good variety of brews on tap - from Guinness to the loaves brews - and nice staff that often appear to be running on adrenaline all night. Strangest thing about this place is the restaurant menu. Amazing pieces available - caramalised onion tarts and beetroot salad is a winner - yet the pub staple, The Parma!, is no where to be seen. Not the worst thing to happen, the brews and other magicalness more than makes up for it.

We had booked for two nights (Friday and Saturday) for a weekend of skiing up at Mt Hotham. At check-in, the lady at the front desk gave us very useful information about the road condition and suggested that we may struggle to get back down the mountain if we made it up the Saturday morning - she said if that was the case, that she wouldn't charge us and recommended we take our belongings with us if we decided to make the trip (Mt. Hotham had just been hit with 2 ft of snow and the access roads had been closed for several hours). We took her advice and she turned out to be spot on - we ended up staying in Dinner Plain for our second night. We phoned the Motor Inn and it was not a problem for them. A few days later, I received a receipt in the mail along with a nice hand written note thanking us for our stay. Great, genuine friendly service is hard to beat. Room was spacious and fairly recently renovated and there is a nice pool in the middle of the complex. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a reasonably priced motel in the Bright / Harrietville area.
