The dim sum debacle…read more Wife knows what I like, and mentioned a dim sum place when we were walking from the train station dragging our wheeled carry-on to our hotel, half a mile away, in old town Zurich, Switzerland. We walked back, and right across the street from the Bahnhoff was a vendor spot with a sign "Dim Sum". Aluminum roof with three tables and five chairs. We go up to the counter, and immediately get what the previous couple had gotten: an order of pot stickers and dumplings. "Kleine order Grosse?" asks the vendor, a middle aged white dude, with his Chinese wife working in the background on making more potstickers or dumplings. Large order of course, and before I can get my credit card out, one large plate of pot stickers, and another plate of dumplings is served. Not piping hot, only warm, as if the meals were stored in a pizza heating container. "CHF38, bitte" says the vendor. $38 for two dishes from a food truck!? Now, you know why Zurich is the most expensive city in Europe. Credit card will cost a additional swiss franc. I'm absolutely famished, after last eating at 6am, with it now 130pm, after a 9,000 mile trip from San Jose, via Atlanta to Zurich earlier that morning. I'm eating like it's my last meal, devouring everything in front of me. Wife doesn't like the dumplings, saying it's too salty. So I finish up the dumplings, and she the pot stickers. As we finish up, the vendor asks us to pass the soy sauce to the next customer, as if the items were not salty enough! Seems that the food served here does taste familiar to me. My ex was infamous for discretely bagging pot stickers and dumplings from Chinese buffets. Those leftover reheated food buffet items! Three stars because service was so outstanding, and the vendor was considerate and kind. And we did finish our plates.

Last day of a 4 week trip around Europe and I have never been spoken to the way I did here. I spotted a shaded part of ground to quickly spray some sun cream before continuing my walk. I spray on my cream and am about to go on my way when I remember I better put my factor 50 on my legs. I have my bag on the bench outside this place that has no sign on it to say it belongs to the fast food kiosk. So I put my foot on the bench and quickly spray my legs with cream. BIG MISTAKE! Over comes an angry looking German man with a moustache and sprays my leg with the detergent. I think he's joking because I don't hear him as I have my headphones in. I laugh and remove my headphones. He then shouts saying I'm silly doing this here as people sit here. I look confused and say pardon? He says 'go over there, people sit here!' He then pushes me out of the way with his shoulder. At this point I have removed my sunglasses and headphones and I'm shocked at what's happening. I say 'oh I'm sorry but I came here because it was in the shade and all you had to do was ask me nicely not spray me with detergent and push me, that was very rude!' (It gets worse) Now out comes an Asian woman shouting at me in German, right in my face about which I assume is that people basically sit there and I shouldn't have my feet there. Which I totally understand but just tell people this in a nice way. I say there's no need to shout and you couldn't just politely asked me to move and I would've. She then screams something, gets in my face and actually kicks the bench with her feet. I mean what on Earth is going on!!! I say to her I don't know why she's shouting and she's only making herself angry. I'm sorry but this is a ridiculous way to treat someone. What an aggressive couple to own a food kiosk in the public industry. I would avoid this place at all costs as you may be shouted at and beaten if, god forbid, you have a genuine complaint about the dimsum. I say visit here at your own risk. If there were no stars I would give it such. Horrible people.

I had the most amazing duck salad I've ever had in my life, with a lemon lime vinaigrette fresh finish, a beautifully prepared perfectly cooked sea bass, accompanied with the perfect sides. I was so full but could not leave out the beautiful desert. Hato is on my top 5 list with Joel Robuchon, French Laundry, morimoto's and Alain Ducasse's worldwide places. I looked at the menu before going and was super excited but to be honest, the host was not very friendly at all. She gave my friend and I a look and apparently we were not up to her standards or maybe she is a snooty person? Our waiter had the same attitude at first, he did not give any explanation on the menu, except that he volunteered info that we could opt for a glass of wine instead of a bottle if we wanted to save some money (not kidding!). However, when the food arrived we were in heaven! All the dishes were AH-MAH-ZING. I honestly don't know what was the best: the Hamachi with yuzu & truffle was super delicious, the dressing complemented the fish instead of overpowering it. I was super hesitant about the eggplant nigiri sushi but my friend wanted it and it surprised me pleasantly. In addition, the sashimi was by far the best one I had in Switzerland. I also want to point out that the matcha chiffon cake was a big hit, even for people like me who are typically not big on desserts. I must also admit that our waiter seemed to mellow up once we ordered food and drinks, he was very happy to give us recommendations of Japanese whiskey to finish our meal and the manager gave us free shots to end the evening - so I guess the initial awkwardness disappeared. However, I still think that restaurants should be welcoming to everyone, regardless of how much they spend, hence, I am not giving it a full 5 star review. So this is a super high 4 star review, overall I had a great night at Hato, maybe 5 star is in their future because I will definitely revisit.

However, it was in the 80s, and I wasn't about to eat soup on a hot day. Our CHF22 chicken dish came with spicy chili chicken, with ear mushrooms and rice. As in most Swiss restaurant, dish comes with rice, but only half a small bowl for the two of us. The chicken was fresh and fell off the bone, using a chopstick in each hand to peel off. Excellent dish, but could use more white rice. Seven steamed shrimp dumplings came with our CHF18 shrimp dumpling dish. Standard presentation in a steamed bamboo pot, with the shrimp tasty and not rubbery. Had to pay CHF4, or $4.28, for two glasses of tap water. Will remember next time to bring my own water to guzzle down prior to stepping into a restaurant in Switzerland. Authentic Chinese food served here. How do I know it's authentic? Any time they serve meat dishes with the bones still in them, in a sauce, it's authentic, as Americans don't want to mess around with bones in sauces. Also, only Chinese eating here.

Jialu Chinese restaurant newly located in the National Hotel,Luzern, is an absolute welcome…read moreaddition to the current Asian restaurants on offer! I hail from Australia and we are spoiled for choices of wonderful asian restaurants, Chinese in particular ,so I like to think I know 'my stuff'. Before I forget, I would also like to add that the owners also have a 'Jialu' located in Hochdorf. First of all the Luzern location is wonderful and when booking try to ask for a table on the window looking out onto the See Promenade so you have a wonderful view to the outside, but if not, no matter. The decor of this restaurant reflects the attention to detail of its owners..It is modern Chinese , very attractive lighting and the furniture was hand made in a modern twist of the traditional style. Even the chairs have traditional Chinese characters carved into the back rests but you won t find the taboo 'bad luck no 4' anywhere. I also really enjoyed the earthy dinner ware..the soup bowls on three legs are pure theatre....fantastic as you will find out if you order it, right down to the very delicate and gorgeous tea cups with the very whimsical almost alive little gold fish 'swimming' in the bottom. But what about the food you ask! Well, we read the Menu card for ages trying to decide...so many delicious sounding offerings that we were spoiled for choice. I also want to add here that Jialu prides itself on authentic Chinese cuisine using the freshest of ingredients. The owner and her chefs all hail from near Beijing so the cuisine is northern China and Sichuan. Very importantly they do not use the very unhealthy MSG (Monosodium Glutamate with its range of nasty side effects, was banned in Australia on medical grounds for years now ) Their fish and prawns are MSC certified , and they can even provide Gluten-Free and Lactose Free on request. YAY!!!! Well, my husband chose the "Scharf Saure' Suppe/Hot and Sour Soup made with chicken, egg and Bamboo , I had the Jialu Fruelingsrollen/ Chicken Spring rolls with a plum sauce which was such a very generous serve there was plenty to share with my lucky husband. He declared the soup delicious and nicely 'hot'. My Spring rolls were generously filled with vegetables and chicken and the rich sweet sauce complimented them nicely. It was also served on a bed of very fresh lettuce leaves and I ate them too. The only tiny criticism was that they were served so quickly from the wok..and perhaps I was too greedy!, but I did burn my tongue on them...so consider yourself fore warned and take it slow. Next up was the Guo Bao Schwein/ Crispy coated and deep fried Pork with a Plum And honey sauce. As with most of their main dishes,it came served with nicely sticky steamed Jasmine rice. Very tasty and it was enjoyed. My husband chose a French Sancerre wine to accompany our meal. We then took a small break and waited for the Knusprige Ente, which is Jialu s version of Peking Duck. This came to the table in three parts. The pancakes in a bamboo steamer basket-6,but you can ask for more. On a separate plate, the shredded cucumber, spring onion and I think, Hoisin sauce. Then , served in a bowl , the duck with crispy skin with thinly sliced flesh attached and sitting atop a broth with pak choy. We enjoyed the ceremony of assembling the pancakes and the pleasure of eating them. Delicious! Sadly there was no room for dessert this time, but we did share a pot of Jasmine tea to finish up. Anyone who has read my reviews know how I love a good cup of tea and I was not disappointed. It was perfect to help with the digestion of the rich meal we had just enjoyed and the whimsical little goldfish at the bottom of our tea cups was a lovely touch! We were delighted to be given superior quality Fortune Cookies with the Bill! Through out the meal our very attentive and friendly Hostess, Frau Achermann- Liu, was on hand to advise and guide you through her menu and you can chose to converse perfectly in German, English or of course, Chinese. Her waiters were also very friendly and efficient. Go and try for yourselves and spread the word! In the warmer weather there is the added attraction of a lovely terrace area adjacent to the See Promenade. It is open for Lunch or dinner but it is closed on Mondays . Like all Chinese Restaurants, Jialu is Family and child friendly ....We were delighted with our experience and will definitely be back!

Within an hour the whole place was full, and rightfully so. The menu is very expansive. Over 100 items. Started off with a bowl of chicken and sweet corn soup. It was delicious. Umami with the contrast of the sweet corn. Would def recc. Dim sum combo platter. Came with a variety of dumplings. It was unfortunately the least favorite item. Could be a different type of region or style of dumplings that I ma not used to, but did not love the taste overall. The wrapper was very thick and flavor was a little bland. Flat Rice noodles: Delicious. Big portion, flavorful, came with lots of protein and veggies. No complaints whatsoever. Forgot the name of it, but the serevr said it was one of the most popular dishes they have. Some sort of beef dish that our server said was North Chinese style. Flavorful, a bit saltier then would like, but not an issue once you pair with rice. Just note that tap water is 2 franks per cup. Overall would definitely come back if I was ever in the area.
