I had an amazing, incredibly reassuring and successful experience with this team that saved me thousands. Consultation fee was $110 for my dog that ingested toxic medication. I called following our local pet ER telling us to come in immediately, within the next 20 minutes, or it would be fatal. Obviously caused a panic- called them as I was leaving to find out the dosage and weight would be completely fine and normal to treat at home (with close monitoring). Steep fee, of course, but would've spent the whole night and an absurd amount of money in the ER if not. I asked a lot of questions that were answered in full, even the ones that admittedly felt stupid. They gave me full descriptions of when to actually be worried in dire detail, down to the hour, and provided a case number to call back if anything were to go down. Thank you all. read more

I fully support a poison control hotline, but this one is not it... they were more concerned with collecting the $110 to just tell me after consulting the doctor to just go to the vet. No follow up questions were allowed. They didn't even give me any reasons why to go to the vet... and when asking what I'd the care plan and worries of the oils my cat possibly absorbed they didn't care to answer just kept pushing "will your Name be one on the card" I must have called another poison control before because they did ask a lot more questions as well as had an option if you were hurting on cash to pay a little less. I had to agree to pay a $110 consultation fee prior to speaking with someone. (Which is not the price on the website, which staes $65-$95) Once on the line, the representative asked a series of extened questions unrelated to the incident. By the time that the representative finally answered the question, I was completely terrified and annoyed. Im not even sure if I was even talking to a veterinarian, as the representative was clicking in the computer, as if researching to answer my question. DO NOT USE THUS SERVICE IN AN EMERGENCY!!! They advised me to give my dog hydrogen peroxide after eating grapes to induce vomiting. The hydrogen peroxide caused severe vomiting and bloody diarhea requiring emergency treatment. My dog is now on 4 medications to heal the damage caused by the hydrogen peroxide and has only recently begun eating after a week of severe illness. The vet said that there are safer methods to induce vomiting and to never give a pet hydrogen peroxide. I paid $110 for advise that resulted in a $1,000 ER bill and almost killed my dog. read more

Control told me to give hydrogen peroxide and peanut butter to my dog. My dog did not throw up, I had to do it again and she still did not throw up. I called back to poison Control an hour later and waited on the phone for another 45 minutes. When ASPCA animal poison control answer they said for me to take my dog to the emergency veterinary clinic. By this time, it had been 8 to 10 hours after my dog, we thought consumed yogurt covered raisins. Waste of $97 just for them to tell me to go to the emergency vet. I will never use or support ASPCA again after what I experienced with their poison control hotline. When my dog ingested an Aleve gel cap, I rushed her to the ER vet within 30 minutes. Instead of inducing vomiting immediately (which every vet should know is step one for a case like this), the clinic told me I had to call the ASPCA Poison Control hotline first -- from inside the emergency vet's office. I was placed on hold for about 10 minutes, then spent another 10+ minutes answering questions and giving payment info before they would even speak with the vet. That's nearly 30 minutes wasted while a toxic drug sat in my dog's stomach. Only after all that did the ER finally induce vomiting -- almost 70 minutes after ingestion. By then, much more of the drug had been absorbed than if they had acted when I arrived at 30 minutes. That delay could make all the difference in whether my dog suffers ulcers or kidney damage. And the privilege of this delay? $89, paid directly to ASPCA. ASPCA shows commercials about "saving neglected pets," but in reality, their hotline puts up a paywall on life-saving advice. They make terrified owners jump through hoops and pay money before treatment moves forward. Pets don't have time to wait on hold so ASPCA can bill a fee. If ASPCA truly cared about animals -- and if vets really need to use their service -- they should provide poisoning protocols directly to veterinary professionals so care isn't delayed. Valuable minutes should never be wasted while a pet's life is on the line. I still don't know for sure if my dog will be okay -- and that uncertainty is something no pet owner should be left with because of unnecessary delays. Very frustrating, ultimately pointless yet pricy experience. Came home to find my dog had ingested some human medication. Called our vet (close to closing hours) and they recommended calling the ASPCA poison control center. Armed with a list consumed meds and dosages I contacted them. I was on the phone for an hour and 15 minutes, almost all of it on hold. In the end, I was charged $115 (seems to go up every year) and advised to take her to the emergency vet. I was issued a case number and a number for the emergency clinic vet to call and consult. We arrived at the emergency vet and sat and sat; found out some of the wait was the result of the front desk person at the vet being put on hold for 45(!) minutes to consult with their "poison control specialist" vet. By the time we were actually seen by the vet it had been as much as 5 hours since possible ingestion. She was fine throughout, and is 100% herself this morning. The treatment was an anti nausea med and some subcutaneous hydration though she would have much preferred to drink for herself. It's enough to cause me to suspect the big corporate and venture capital-owned practices make big donations to the ASPCA to encourage their clearly understaffed poison line to shuttle patients towards emergency vet practices. My kitty decided to eat a scented bead that you stick on the inside of your toilet for whatever reason, and I panicked when I saw the main ingredient was polyethalyne glycol. I called the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, and even though I didn't have the funds to pay the full $95, they helped me to realize that what my cat ingested was not a toxic substance and saved me a very expensive and stressful vet visit. If you have any concern if your pet ingests something that is or may be toxic, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center line. Yes, there will be a hold time. If you're worried about your pet's stability status, take them directly to an emergency vet. Best case scenario, whatever your pet ingested was not as toxic as you thought and you just saved yourself a $1000 emergency vet visit by calling them from the comfort of your home for only $95. Worst case scenario, the ASPCA Poision Control Center recommends going to an emergency vet immedietly for treatment -- in which case when you arrive to the ER, the emergency vets will STILL NEED you to open a case with the ASPCA. They consult directly with ASPCA board-certified toxicologists to assess your pets case and create a custom treatment plan and follow-up care. If you're looking at these reviews because your pet ate something and you're not sure if you should call -- please don't wait any longer. Called because I accidentally gave my cat too much of prescription antibiotics for 3 days and realized my mistake and went to call my vet who was out of office. I thought this hotline would be like the position control hotline and they tell you the severity of your situation and if you should seek medical attention. The aspca essentially just told me I could either a) wait it out and watch for signs (too lethargic or too hyper) or b) take him to the emergency vet and have them watch him for 4 hours and pay even more money. The service was incredibly vague and not worth the $95. If he had actually ingested a fatal amount he would have probably been dead before anyone even picked up the phone. Had an emergency last night and was advised by the Emergency Vet to contact ASPCA Animal Poison Control. When I tried to call, I waited on hold for several minutes without any idea of when someone might pick up. In an emergency not knowing if/when someone might pick up is just not comforting. So I googled Animal Poison Control for another option and someone else and when I tried them, as soon I called them there is a recording with an expected wait time so if youre having an emergency you know what to expect. They were a couple dollars less too, but not a lot. I do like that the ASPCA has a menu to route calls for emergency and non-emergency calls but when someone calls for an emergency there should be some sort of indication of wait time for those that are waiting for an emergency, to indicate either what number caller they are in line or what their expected wait time might be and not having that is a deal breaker for me. Look at the other reviews and see there is a common complain about the wait times, some even complaining about the Vet having to wait long times for treatment plan info. We had an incident where my dog had opened a cabinet and ate an entire bottle of aspirin. Rushed to the vet, had to call poison control. They kept us on hold for AN hour. And had us leave a call back number. Oh. And give our card to make sure we were charged. It was around 5:30pm, and our vet was closing. They ended up giving treatment to the best of their abilities and then sent us home. Poison control finally called my vet back the NEXT day. I am absolutely livid. If it wasn't for the actions of my vet, who knows how the situation would have turned out. I called this number after my cats had gotten some dried mushrooms. I listened through the options, and one option said if you are unable to pay the fee press...so I did. My experience was pretty different from all the 1 star reviews. They listened to what I had a concern about, then asked if I had an issue with the fee, I said yes, and they asked what I would be able to pay. They accommodated. And they didn't insist on CC information until after we had consulted with their vet. The person on the phone as well as the vet consulted were very helpful, and gave me a protocol to follow, as well as a case number if I had follow up questions. I leave this review to hopefully let others know that in a moment of panic, this could still be a very helpful resource. I was prompted I needed to pay 95 and at the time was super annoyed but my alternative was to rush her to the ER which would have been a lot more so I said yes I'll pay it and then they put you on hold. I was freaking out a bit waiting for a human for 5 minutes but by the time they came on they were very helpful and basically said my dog should be good and the amount of poison ingested shouldn't be an issue. There is and Ep # on the bags of most poison substances and they have all that in their system so they literally know everything. It was like seeing a vet without the $100s or thousands you would pay for seeing a vet. The $95 was well worth it for me. Obviously if your pet is in clear distress take them to the vet but mine was acting fine even though she just ate poison. They give you a case # as well and you can give that case # to your vet if the circumstances escalate. And they get the background of what you already discussed. read more

So I did--they said they'd text the reference number because I was speeding down the interstate to get to my dog. Which they didn't. But I still had to pull out a credit card--at 75 MPH--to get any advice at all. They also placed the vet on hold for an incredibly long time despite giving them a "more direct line" when trying to confirm details for a plan and treatment.
