We are very pleased with the friendly, professional services at Aspen Dental, Coralville. However the billing has been incorrect three out of three times. So, every time we have a service and the bill comes, I need to spend 30-45 minutes on the phone after insurance has issued their Explanation of Benefits to resolve the overbilling. Please do not seek service from this business. There were so many HUGE red flags in my experience. I scheduled my appointment after finding out I was pregnant. I heard pregnancy could affect your gum and teeth health, so I wanted to be seen. The front desk workers were very kind and helpful, but that is where the good things ended. They convinced me to get x-rays done even though I was pregnant and informed them multiple times I was pregnant. It was absolutely not necessary and should have been avoided after speaking with my doctor. The aid who took my x-rays and did my background paperwork and such also behaved as though she had no idea what she was doing in general. The hygienist was so rough with my gums, and I don't have sensitive gums. I involuntarily flinched multiple times during her exam because the pain was so great. After my exam, the hygienist informs me that I have gingivitis and bone loss from poor oral care. (I floss twice a day and brush twice a day with an electric toothbrush). This obviously didn't sound right to me, and the sections of degradation they were trying to point out on pictures was not obvious to me. After minimal explanation of why they were recommending the treatments they had decided on, I was ushered out of my exam chair without given time to ask questions and into the financial office to receive my quote. I was quoted over $1k without even really understanding what I was paying for. I absolutely did not sign anything and left that business with no intention of going back. I just went to an absolutely amazing dentist in Cedar Rapids. This is four months after my original visit at Aspen. I was told by this dentist that my teeth and gums were totally healthy. No concerns other than getting some sealant on my molars eventually. This is a scam masquerading as a dentist office. I am flabbergasted. read more

Trust is important in any healthcare relationship and I'm afraid this business is not one that can be trusted. My experience with their office is while their staff are friendly, they will also try to sell you unnecessary services to boost their own profit margin. I went in just looking for standard teeth cleaning but instead was told that I needed deep cleaning (conveniently not covered by insurance), out of pocket fee for a night guard and offered custom retainers also for another hefty out if pocket fee. I went to Aspen because I had 2 teeth that had broken. The recommended root canals. They toldme that it would cost me $10,000. Well I couldn't afford it, so they tried to help out with financial aid. The doctor and staff are very friendly but dont be fooled. I went for cleaning after I noticed that they give free X rays and estimates. They said i have zero cavities but i need special cleaning treatment that cost $ 2508. Never heard of cleaning (2 visits only) that cost $2508. I think they may have noticed that i am driving a nice car and wanted to get more out of me. Places like that should be investigated. They called it MSRP cleaning treatment. I said (plz i want the regular $130 cleaning) and they refuse to do a regular cleaning. Very upsetting experience. My Mother started going there last year. The dentist has been mean and cruel to her because she's an elderly woman. They've charged her for things they didn't do because she was paying cash. Then she had a tooth that broke off and needed the rest of tooth surgically removed and an implant. She decided to get treatment elsewhere. She needed a referral from Aspen. So she went there and they did more x-rays and took a look in her mouth. She finished and paid the bill. The next day the new oral surgeon's office called 3 times to get the x-rays sent over and Aspen Dental said there were NO x-rays! So she had to pay for new x-rays at her oral surgeon. So I took her back to Aspen Dental to get a refund for the x-rays and they gave me multiple excuses why the x-rays weren't sent but she didn't deserve a refund! They lie they cheat you and they are not nice to elderly people! DO NOT GO TO CORALVILLE ASPEN DENTAL!! read more

Avoid like the plague. Aside from two memberable dental hygenists and one dentist who worked with me while being there, everything else was sub-par. Their default is to charge all customers for floride on each visit. While it's an optional charge, they don't mention it (business goals). However, even when you do mentioned it, the receptionists at the front also fail to mention it to the hygenist which means unless you tell them twice (or even three times) it ends up on the bill. Vet who you get as a hygenist as well. While I have had two great ones there, i had one who took no more than 8 minutes for an entire cleaning. Failed to mention or notice a chipped tooth and took all the $580 worth of x-rays possible. I'm ranting. I haven't enjoyed it. I've learned. I don't recommend. read more

I would not recommend Aspen Dental to anybody. It had a corporate vibe when I walked in and it very much is corporate when I left. When you go to Aspen Dental watch out for other tactics and them trying to sell you products fluoride rinse cancer screenings and a bunch of other BS for their corporate company to make money. Also watch out as they have to schedule them to come multiple times and they try to sell you more products the next time to. Absolutely do not recommend. I scheduled my annual cleaning and checkup, only to wait 2 full hours.. when we reached their closing time, the office manager pulled me into her office to reschedule. No apology or anything, and frankly she was rather rude about it, as though she were the one being inconvenienced. She also tried to charge me for the x-rays they took at the start, which I didn't even want and was not informed earlier of. The other staff are quite nice, but I won't be going back. My first visit as a new patient - my greeting was, "We called. We have to reschedule you, today we are short staffed." But they hadn't called. I asserted that it was not professional to cancel an appointment without making positive contact with a patient. Furthermore, I had made it clear when I called I had tooth pain and needed help. At first the answer was it was the fault of the call center for not getting the number right. Then they decided to take me. Then we proceeded through 1.5 hrs of waiting and inspection and xrays... and no one had ever told me what was going on next. I had to corner a technician and ask her. Finally, I was being asked to go over a treament plan, and I brought up my pain, again, and all I got was words, words word. I got "nobody treats you the same day" -- what about the "accepting emergencies" sign on the door? "Well, we can't help you today?" Even for pain? There are specifics for my treatment they cited to refuse service to me. The office manager, Sandra, interrupted me when I complained, and she was loudly defensive. When I asked her to let me finish just one sentence, to give me the space and voice to finish complaint, she gave a sarcastic apology. I said goodbye, and left, but then came back to ask Sandra for her supervisor's contact info. I got a phone number, I called it, but the outgoing message was suspiciously absent. BTW, when I returned to the office, another customer and I had to stand outside the office to wait for the staff to unlock the doors and let us in. I have been seeing Dr. Ruggiero. He is warm and kind; thorough, knowledgeable, skillful, and especially great with communication (expressing in layman's terms). He and the staff have been patient with me. (I've been worried because I have new knees and don't want to damage them with any sort of infection). He has never judged or shown any irritation with me. Just the opposite. I've called on weekends and asked for a couple of rechecks merely to allay my fears. They got me in immediately. I am very comfortable there and with him. I highly recommend him. As for the reviews of Aspen itself, not the dentists, I suggest you do what you are doing now by reading reviews, talking to others, getting referrals from your physicians. You are the customer. You make the decisions. You are your doctors' boss. Any business may suggest additional treatments or purchases. Get second opinions. Do the same for any treatment you need or company with which you do business. Get the second opinion before you spend the time and money. read more

I guess turning down their high-pressure sales pitches for their favored toothbrush and cleaning solutions got too much to bear. I scheduled an initial appointment and was seen within a week. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and the dentist was not judgmental at all (which made him unlike other dentists I've been to). Cleanings aren't part of the initial appointment, which is how they can schedule those initials so quickly, but they are completely honest about what will happen (via their website, and a pre-appointment phone call), what things cost, and what components are optional (i.e., the oral cancer screening is an additional charge, but it is not required.) I was extremely disappointed with the service from Aspen Dental. I called the office three months before I knew I would need an appointment, planning ahead as we were moving to the Iowa City area and I would be having a baby over the summer. I thought I had covered all the bases, and checked with the lady I scheduled with to make absolutely sure that my daughter and I could have cleanings on the same day, back to back. She assured me that yes, we could have just cleanings without x-rays, as I knew that was all we needed. The morning of our appointments, 30 minutes before we were supposed to be seen, I received a phone call saying our appointments needed to be rescheduled because the hygenist was out. I was told I could come in for my x-rays, however. When I mentioned that I didn't need x-rays because I only needed a cleaning, and that the lady who scheduled me told me that this was an option, I was told that I would not be seen without x-rays. So - I planned ahead and did everything I was supposed to do but Aspen dental employees cancelled our appointments at the very last minute, gave me conflicting information, and tried to get me to pay for unnecessary services. Obviously I never rescheduled my appointments and instead chose an honest, non corporate practice for our dental needs. Avoid these unprofessional people at all costs! read more

Poked at my gums with a metal instrument until they bled. Would not give me a diagnosis or a treatment plan until they ran my credit. Once my credit was approved, they kept trying to sell me on invisalign. They kept telling me that if I don't get invisalign, all my teeth will fall out. Finally, I went to a different dentist, and the new dentist requested my x-rays. Aspen would not release digital copies of my xrays, they just gave me film xrays which are useless. read more

Supposedly the discount they applied to the original estimate was only good if you completed all the work in 30 days. So I got screwed on price for 2 crowns and a periodontal cleaning. This dental office is incompetent. They cannot accurately run insurance coverage for routine services and preventive care that is 80-100% covered. They claim the services I had scheduled are typically never covered. My policy has always covered the procedures I had scheduled today at other places. They want to charge out of pocket and then issue credit on the account. They tried this this last year as well and succeeded. They do not reimburse the out of pocket expense once the claim goes through. They then add partially covered procedures o the treatment plan to use up the credit. It seems like fraud by double billing myself, then my policy, then using up my credit like this. I call my insurance and instantly verify coverage. They refuse to verify coverage in this same straight forward manner. Yhey claim its nobodys job to assist. They all claim to be just an office assistants. They issue treatment plans that are vague and do not address the care that is preventative or that the patient requests. They are completely incompetent at running a dental clinic. read more

Here's a tip babes: go anywhere else. I'm going to tell you about my appointment with no exaggeration whatsoever and it is still the most insane thing that has ever happened to me in the care of a medical professional. I had (and still have) a chipped molar. It started okay; a nice gentleman took X-rays, which I thought was a little much considering the tiny circumstance, but that's fine, I'm a new patient and they needed to familiarize themselves with my mouth bones. After that, he sat me down in the chair where I was forced to watch HGTV's show about rich couples looking for a new home and being way too picky. WHY CAN'T YOU LOOK PAST PAINT COLOR, DEBRA? After my imaginary argument with Debra, the hygienist came in to poke around in my mouth and speak in secret code to X-ray man while he took notes. They both mentioned how minor my chip was and assured me it was no big deal. Another episode of House Hunters later, the dentist finally came in. He told me that he could either do a filling on the cracked tooth which would inevitably have to be repaired sometime in the future, or he could do a crown which would be a permanent fix. I made the mistake of saying "I don't know how insurance works," and it triggered him to keep adding more things to my diagnosis. He then said that the tooth on the opposite side of my mouth would eventually need to be fixed too, due to my teeth grinding. He said that he would need to do a crown on it now, as a preventative measure or else I would "lose that tooth." He was trying to scare me into procedures and it was working. He also said, "we're going to need to take out your wisdom teeth." Really? You NEED to take them out? My trusted family dentist of many years always told me that we won't need to do anything with my wisdom teeth unless they were bothering me or bullying their peers. I told this new clown that and he argued it, again saying that I would "lose all those teeth" next to them if I didn't get them removed. I told him no, I just want my chip fixed. He said, "ok, let's have you talk with the office manager about costs and scheduling. Do you have any questions?" and I said, "Yes. What about the reason I came in? My tooth is cutting into my tongue and that's the only reason I'm here." And he said, and I am not joking or exaggerating or anything, "I'm really busy today." SIR that's why I SCHEDULED an APPOINTMENT. I have never been so close to crying in my life. I said, "but that's what my appointment was for." And he said, "well if you move forward with scheduling everything, I could smooth the edges or do a temporary fill." He threatened me into scheduling all these unnecessary procedures. He threatened me using my own comfort as leverage. He only had time to help me if I moved forward with his bogus procedures. I agreed to speak with the office manager about scheduling and he told me to wait in the chair until someone gets me. The office manager smiles and slides me a quoted bill for $6,056. I said to her, "pardon my French, but what in tarnation is this?" She says, "Don't worry, this is before insurance deductions." And again I say, "what is this though? This is for a crown?" She proceeds to break it all down for me, and writes out each item and the cost for everything, minus insurance coverage this time. She wrote: Hygiene: $43.00 2 Crowns: $1153.00 (each) 4 fillings: $169.92 Nightguard: $513.00 Wisdom extractions: $1682.18 Now is the part of the dentist appointment where you have an anxiety attack and sweat and stare insanely at one of two full bowls of peppermints in the office. It was too many peppermints I'm gonna just say that right now. Now about these fees; I had agreed to the one crown. I asked her what the fillings were about and she said she didn't know, that she would have to ask the dentist. I said, "okay," and looked her in the eyes until she realized I meant, "go ask him now, I'll wait right here." She comes back and says, "the fillings are for cavities." Not once was I ever told I had even one cavity and now out of thin air I have four? The wisdom teeth extractions angered me the most. Not only was that not even close to the reason why I was there in the first place, but these are teeth that haven't moved in over 5 years and aren't even out of my gums yet. They're just chilling, doing their own thing, minding their own beeswax, and this stranger wants to dig them out of my head. I scheduled an appointment for the next day because that was the deal to get my chip fixed, but the dentist still didn't do anything to help me. I didn't have a dentist in the area so was very stressed when I had a bad toothache that was getting unbearable. Aspen Dental was able to get me right in (the same day an hour from the time I called). Most dental offices are closed on Friday's, but to my relief Aspen was not! I have visited a few dentists in the past who were short and rude, but much to my relief every person at the office was very friendly and extremely accommodating. I scheduled on appointment since I was having a tooth ache. I arrived at least 15 minutes to my appointment. 45 minutes passed by and I was still not yet seen by anyone. Someone else walked in the door and was immediately seen while I was still waiting to be called back. My appointment was at 8AM and it was 850 when I decided to get up and leave. I understand since I was a new patient I probably would have to wait but a small head up when I made the appointment would have been great. Just letting someone know we take priority over current patients than new ones was a good thing to be told before hand than waiting, waiting and never being seen. The new patient appointment went extremely smooth. I was surprised at the efficiency of X-rays and different specialists examining my mouth which was great! However, as I was leaving, I asked for a copy of my X-rays for a second opinion. The woman at the desk told me it wouldn't be an issue to send them electronically. When I did eventually call to send X-rays to another location I was told on the phone that I would have to come in to pick up the X-rays. I told her kindly she could send it through edossia. She scoffed and told me she would give my information to another person who would send it. When I went to my other appointment for my second opinion a week later, my images weren't ever sent. WORST decision I have made was setting up an appointment with Aspen Dental. First trip in they looked at my teeth, came up with a "dental plan" and charged me almost $700. After 7 trips to their office, a scar on my lip from a slip up with a dental tool, and referrals to 2 different specialists my crown had still not been placed on my tooth. I finally decided to get a second opinion and what do you know, not only was my tooth improperly prepared for a crown but the appointment they wanted me to set up with the second specialist was not necessary. I spent 2 months with Aspen Dental trying to have a crown placed on my tooth yet it took a quality dentist 2 weeks to get the work done for half of the price out of pocket. It is AMAZING that these folks are still in business. They have you sign multiple documents before work is even performed and now they're sending me another $700 bill now for work they did not even complete... STAY AWAY! read more

This is a corporate business however I felt that I received very personal care. 1st time I went in was for a bad abscess being it was an emergency they were willing to get me in ASAP and only took the necessary X-rays. You must make sure they know it is an emergency. I did tell them several times. Then when you go in for your initial appointment they will bring you into the office to discuss your options this does not mean you need to purchase everything. This is your healthcare so truly your decision. Be your own advocate. The dentist is awesome, fast, courteous and funny. The assistants are great. They work with my insurance and saved us a small fortune. Probably my copays were 30 percent of my prior dentist. Also fewer appointments. I really can't complain. Went in for a cleaning. Had emphasized that I wanted a cleaning. The paperwork I handed in specified the reason for my being there......A CLEANING. After 15 minutes of x-rays, was seated with my dentist rattling off to his assistant in the back the crowns I needed, and oh, my teeth were worn down, a mouth guard would definitely be recommended. I emphasized again....I'm here for a cleaning. {Please bear in mind, I've had a regular dentist for years, and the only reason I was here to see the folks at Aspen was they were right down the road from where I now worked and my current dentist had relocated further away). Left alone for about fifteen minutes, when the office manager shows up to discuss my "treatment plan." Once again, emphasized "I'm here for a cleaning!" The office manager responds "Well who told you that?" At that point walked straight from the chair to the door, the office manager wanting to know whatever was wrong. Stopped briefly at the front desk to confirm if I owed anything for the x-rays and exam. Never did get my cleaning. WILL NEVER GO BACK. read more
