**** This library has MOVED to 464 S Old Middletown Rd…read more **** I visited the new location yesterday and started a new Yelp page for the new location yesterday. I also reported the old location closed yesterday, and added tips to announce the new location on both the old and new pages... but then today, Yelp MOVED MY PHOTOS to the listing for the old address. Odd, isn't it? Repeatedly these things happen to me on Yelp, and repeated reach-outs to the local Yelp woman go un-helped. I work hard to contribute to Yelp and it's clear that my input isn't valued at all by Yelp. So this is for the legit users who care about my attempt at helpful content... The new location of Middletown Free Library is now near Wayside Market, and Bortondale, the former Penn-DOT DMV. Currently, you need to look for signs for Roosevelt School, because there is not even a temporary banner of signage indicating that the library is here. When you pull in, make sure to drive to the rear of the Roosevelt School on the right of the school (from the road). Look for the book deposit box, and the entrance is there. Again, signage is still in the works. This is the brand new space, much larger than the old one. I was speaking with the librarian at the circulation desk and we guesstimated that the whole 2 floors of the old location could fit in the ground floor of the new space! But, the new place has a second floor, currently under renovation, so it will be drastically larger than the former space. The children's area is separate from the main library space, with a glass wall to keep sound contained. This was great at story time with Mr. Jason, because the kids had their own place to be themselves. Singing, banging on drums, bubbles, etc. After story time, extra toys came out, and my toddler had a ball. Mr. Jason really gets into his stories, and the kids can't help but become as enthusiastic as he. On the way out, the librarian had chocolates and candy canes to give us, which was so sweet. I took tons of pictures of the new space but Yelp seems to have a problem with that, so you'll have to check the old page for the DOZENS of pictures they moved. I don't have time for the bs anymore.

The only issue is that Google Maps will take you to the wrong entrance (next to the fire station). Instead, you have to take the next exit and drive around. There is a small lawn sign for the library, which is easy to miss, but if you see the school, the library is on the backside, so just drive around. You won't regret it!

The library is a single floor, with an adult side and a kid side. The kid side has lots of books (of course), as well as toys geared toward younger children, such as a wooden train set and blocks. There is also an open play area for kids to hang out, which mostly seems to attract the elementary school and under crowd. Despite having somewhat limited hours, the library bulletin board is full of weekly activities and classes, like mah jong and arts clubs. I haven't checked out the events, but they seem great if you're looking for weekday activities for people of all ages. Public libraries are an essential 'third space' to foster community and encourage lifelong learning. I was glad to see lots of people enjoying the Rachel Kohl community library on a recent weekend afternoon, and I'll definitely be back.

The DVD collection keeps me coming back although I'm surprised at the lack of documentaries (National Geographic, historical, travel, cultural, political) available. The noise-level at this branch can be horribly distracting sometimes with obnoxious regulars that have no respect for other patrons. Staff does a better job, than in the past, about controlling it but, still. Such a thing wouldn't be allowed for a moment in any other library that I've visited. Of course, that was sometime ago and the Nuns (librarians) were ninja-trained, I think. Lol.

Awesome CD collection - Ok. I get it. CDs are dying and downloads are rising. I am a raving fan of Spodify but not all my bands are on it. So there are some CDs I need to get to upload to iTunes. SPL helps me. 2.) Spectacular DVD section - another thing that has gone the way of streaming but most everyone still has a DVD player. They offer a nice taste of everything: foreign, documentary, independent and major studio. There's a nominal fee required but it's a pittance compared to the theaters. 3.) The Shelves - they do a nice job stocking books I enjoy reading in subjects that I'm passionate about 4.) The Delaware County Library System - I can request books and CDs from other libraries if Swarthmore doesn't stock it. And they are usually delivered quickly. Their website and ordering process is great. 5.) Their sales - used books, CDs, DVDs and delicious baked goods. Worth seeking them out!

It sits inside the also recently built Darley Green Development which make it an awesome addition for the people who live in those townhomes (great idea) but us outside folks are welcome too. The floor plan is very well laid out with clear, bold signage overhead. The DVD is good but a bit awkward to read because they shelve them on their sides so you have to bend your head. This is my third time here and I've only had one problem and that was with a gentleman who refused to let me pay my fine with my debit card because it wasn't signed. He tried to make me sign it with a sharpie. I refused to do that and just came back with cash.

This is an unaffiliated library that has nothing to do with government funded/county/state/city…read morefunded library systems. It's important that one knows that going in. They are an independent library. It costs $3 to get a library card and be allowed to check out books. They are funded entirely by community support and donations. Everyone I have interacted with there is very kind and friendly, but I honestly stopped going after a short while because their selection is very, very limited. I support them and the reason they exist but in this day and age I have to be honest and say their existence is somewhat superfluous when one can get just about any book one wants from numerous other sources, free or cheaply.
