And one of would walk around tossing a marker in the air and catching it and I remember him dropping it in front of girls with skirts and totally looking up their skirts. Totally disgusting. Also remember the garbage health teacher who made gays feel bad and was just not a good teacher. Keep your propaganda out of public schools. Go down the hill to north county if your convictions are that strong. They're not? They pay garbage down there? Yeah so just indoctrinate these kids. I do remember amazing English and math teachers. Specifically ms Roberts was amazing and so nurturing. And I hate math but she made me love it. Mr taber was so amazing and fun, kids were total asses to him. Mrs McDonald was.... What an atrocity! Shame on the selfish, self-centered head football coach Vic Cooper, his staff, and athletic director, Sam DeRose, of Atascadero High School. These adults, whom presumably teach our children through mentorship and as role models, chose to only use the same handful of football players in each game. ALL SEASON LONG. Perhaps the coaches in their leadership positions felt the small group of players were the best choices to gain an advantage in order to win games. Unfortunately, AHS football's win/loss record proves otherwise at 0-10. As players came off the field at turnovers, breathing hard with hands on their hips or leaning over at the waist, there was no apparent consideration given by the coaching staff for the football players' exhausted conditions. Because the same group of players were sent right back in at the next turnover. To make matters worse, some of those boys were used to play both offensive and defensive positions, resulting in zero opportunity for a break between plays. The long faces of the unused players along the sidelines changed over the season from hopeful, to disappointed, to bitter. The fault lies squarely on the backs of Cooper and DeRose. The prevailing nepotism within the AHS coaching staff has thrown a dark cloud over the young men, supporting parents, and the entirety of the school, including their Boosters club. At the beginning of summer practice, Vic Cooper stated to parents and players alike, that those who did not attend each and every practice (often in triple digit heat), each workout in the school weight room, and each meeting, would not be a starting player when the season began. Shockingly, these rules applied to some and not others. The majority of those who attended all the practices and weight lifting, as mandated by Coach Cooper (the rule maker), saw little or NO actual playing time during games, as they were never offered the opportunity to go in. What a shame. But worse, what lesson does this teach our next generation? The players who experienced consistent field times during games were, more often than not, direct relatives and/or living with AHS football coaches. Atascadero High School placed Vic Cooper as Varsity head football coach with assistant coaches Sam DeRose (AHS Athletic Director) and Ryan Cooper (Vic Cooper's brother), among others. The JV Head coach is Christian Cooper (Vic Cooper's brother), with assistant coach John Hurst (Vic Cooper's brother-in-law). The Freshman had coach is Ben Tomasini (Vic Cooper's cousin). AHS's starting quarterback had the last name of Cooper. The two starting running backs and defensive backs last names were Cooper. The starting running back and linebacker's last name was DeRose. AHS coaching staff routinely used those players not related to them, to bring the football into an advantageous position for touchdown, then pull the talented players out to send in their family member(s) in order to increase their own relative's stats for possible football scholarships and college entry. Guess what? IT WORKED, folks! The same consideration to family members was given when carrying the football for yardage. Spectators and family members seated in the stands openly expressed their concern and disgust over the repeated advantage given to relatives of the coaching staff. Grumbles from AHS football players also grew louder with every game lost. However, with the current coaching dynasty in place, people (parents/guardians or players themselves) were intimidated to speak up because of Vic Cooper's warning during the parent meeting at the beginning of the year: Any whining or complaining from players or parents, and your child will not see game time. What BS! The starting Cooper quarterback routinely threw his helmet during games and screamed along the sidelines. One might place blame solely on Vic Cooper's selfish nepotism, but that may not be accurate. The athletic director, Sam DeRose, is also responsible for the athletes. DeRose, however, is either caught up in the strangle hold of the Coopers, or he has chosen to turn a blind eye to the tragedy. What a shame. Possible scholarships have been stripped away from good Senior football players, all to benefit the coaching staff's own. Shame on DeRose, whose own son was a starting player, who rarely attended summer practices and weights, who routinely walked out from watching game highlights, who could be heard by those in the stands during game time as he yelled at this father while standing next to him on the sidelines. Members of the Atascadero High School Orange and Grey Boosters have gone from whispering among themselves to outright talking about the lack of propriety shown to the school and football program. Many pulled their monetary support. The win/loss record of the past few years shows a total lack of regard in a desire to win. When coaches place themselves above positions they were hired to fulfill, there can be no winners or positive outcome. read more

One of the better schools in SLO County. Much better than others statewide. There is room for improvement and they are working on some changes . Currently the GYM is being renovated for the roof, and the AC system. In 2012, the PTSA started hosting a large Career Fair, which is also being done this year, in May I believe. The school has a large athletic program which includes a newer strength training building with machines like a private health club. They also have a beautiful running track that is a rubberized material, so much better than running on dirt like the other schools (like SLO, etc.). The bleachers are old though, and are wood. The school has a large football team at every grade level (9--12th), and the City has very strong athletic support and spirit. At games, the stands are generally full on the home side. read more

We currently have two kids attending AHS, one of whom is high functioning on the Autism Spectrum and attends regular classes. For the most part, we have been very happy with the school overall. We have been very happy with the specialists and teachers who are tasked with supporting our Autistic son. But I would be remiss if I did not warn that the assistant principal, Karen Donague, who is in charge of student discipline, is absolutely clueless when it comes to students with special needs, especially on the Autism Spectrum. Our son was involved in an incident where Donague severely overreacted and believed our son threatened harm to some of his friends and a teacher in a comic strip. However, neither the mentioned friends nor the teacher felt any threat at all. Our sons school counselor also did not view the incident as a threat. No police were even involved. But Donague, who seemed to barely know our son, and who quite obviously knew nothing about Autism, banned our son from campus until he could be checked out by his psychologist counselor and told us our son "should be placed in a mental hospital". Our son's counselor was absolutely floored by Donague's behavior and immediately conveyed to the school that our son was not a threat to anyone. As such, our son returned to school immediately. When asked how he felt about Donague's interaction with him, my son said, "She made me feel like a criminal." It is for all of these reasons that I must give only a 2 star rating. If you have a neurotypical student, you'll probably be all right, though I can't say with conviction that Donague would handle any discipline fairly and correctly. But if you have a special needs student, don't let Donague anywhere near your student. She's clueless. read more
