Bad Rothenfelde has a unique "Salinen Gradierwerk", a massive wall made of timber frames and birch…read morebranches that spans nearly half a kilometer; it runs through the heart of the town. People walk around this construction to 'take in the salts', as they are deemed beneficial to health. The salts are a result of evaporation of the local ground water which is pumped (originally by a still-standing windmill, now electric pumps) down from the top and trickles down the birch bark to the base of the wall. As it evaporates on its way down to the base of the wall, the minerals in the water settle on the birch branches and twigs, and the water's salts concentrate at the base. The evaporation smells like minerals and this is what people come to experience as "taking in the salts". This wall is the site of an innovative light show installation through the long winter months, after dark. The show is basically photo and video projected onto the wall in large-scale. Different sections of the wall are occupied by different artists. So, in the middle of a bitterly cold evening in the dark, you'll find groups of people and families walking around the cold evaporative salts admiring the media installations against the wall. It's terrific to observe even just as a "drive-by", because it looks like large outdoor movies and whimsical light movements in the middle of the darkness. The art includes political commentary, uniquely formatted plays of light suitable for massive scale projections, and includes music accompaniments. When I went recently, one artist had a stylized representation of a funeral parade from the Creole culture of the Caribbean islands, complete with music, showing figures dancing in the Caribbean style. I highly recommend this unique light projection art show in the middle of dark winter!
