Highlights: + Uni custard + Lobster cappuccino + The Wagyu omgggg + Rhubarb meringue dessert + Egg dessert + Petit fours...all of the desserts really. Complimentary bday cheesecake was a nice touch. Misses: A few things were too hot - the cheese snack and the sweetbreads in the cappuccino were like burn-your-tongue-hot. Shouldn't be happening at a two star. Also, the duck was kind of chewy, especially coming after the wagyu (tough act to follow!). Overall I didn't think it was really worth the pride. Would rather go to their wine bar next door. This was a painfully average dining experience, which is not what I was expecting coming into such a highly regarded 2-Michelin star establishment. Firstly, the service I experienced was pretty bad and uncoordinated. I had to ask three times to be explained the wine pairing (which I wasn't told about, I just inquired to see if they had one) and the one server kept saying that yes the other server will tell me about it, and it never happened. A majority of my courses came out and the wine pairing was nowhere in site. I started most courses without the wine poured which really put a damper on the experience and is totally unacceptable service for a place like this. There was a small piece of lobster shell in my lobster dish, which was a turn off. I was trying to figure out the kitchen the whole time, but it was an enigma. Most of the chefs just stood there staring at us the whole time, and there was very minimal cooking done in the "open kitchen" formatting. Was a little weird and not what I expected. I was disappointed to be served A4 wagyu at a place of this price point, instead of A5. Come on now! Most of the dishes were decently good, but absolutely nothing was memorable to me. Great, satisfying dinner and perfect for special occasions. Altera is set in an unassuming location in Tribeca and the dining area is minimalist, not too aesthetic but elegant, well-lit with rock music playing that I loved. The staff were top notch, very welcoming and looking to curate the experience as best for different diners. Drinks menu had extensive options and I went with the wine pairing I felt was reasonably priced and ended up including very good options that each enhanced the courses. The chefs counter surrounds the kitchen and it's nice to get presented with each dish by the chef. The courses were all evenly spaced and was never waiting long between courses, even if you were ahead of other diners. The courses followed a fairly typical pattern - small bites featuring crab, a danish course Æbleskiver, then a caviar bite - they were all good but wouldn't say mind blowing. Next were squash and tuna dishes - artsy presentations, well seasoned and a bit heavier in building appetite. Moving into savory courses we had halibut, lobster, beef and duck. The halibut looked a bit sloppy like ingredients thrown together in a bow but tasted very nice and was cooked great. The lobster was hidden in a foam/custard and featured sweetbread/truffle - tasted fantastic with tons of umami while soft/tender. The beef with carrot and harissa also wasn't impressive at first glance but tasted amazing - juicy, tender, balanced by vegetables and the harissa added a strong smoky taste. Finally the duck was also simple looking but tasted very good though the skin was soft. The meat was juicy as well and paired great with the sauces - hazelnut and some truffle. Finally for dessert we had two mild courses then small bites - a lemon based dish then pineapple. Both were sweet and good, not memorable but satisfying. Then we had small bites to round out - raspberry, banana and chocolate all were good! Overall a very good meal, I'd say the dishes were all consistent and very good though none that stood out as particularly memorable. They only have one table, but I think it can seat up to 5 or 6 if you are close, we had a party of 4 and it was perfect! The chef's counter was quite a large wrap around, and could seat more. It is honestly a crime against humanity that this place does not have 3 Michelin stars. In fact, tomorrow morning when I wake up, I am going to update my résumé, apply for a job at Michelin, get that job, and come back here and rectify the situation. I've been to plenty of 1, 2, and 3 star Michelin restaurants, and I can honestly say that I have rarely been mind blown by every single course. Tonight that is exactly what happened. Forget the moment when you first step into the restaurant, everything was perfection from the moment I stepped out of the Uber! I was greeted at the door and escorted into the restaurant where my coat was taken, and my bag was given a place to hang - already off to a good start. For the entire night, the staff was attentive, meticulous - not to mention incredibly warm, welcoming, and personable - and did not miss a beat. I love a good chef's counter, and one thing I loved most about this restaurant was that, with only 18 total seats in the entire restaurant, every guest has a seat at the chef's counter. The wine - we were matched with the perfect white Bordeaux. In fact, it was so good that I drank it at a rate that was impolite at best. The food - I would love to write words down here right now, but I am speechless. And since the menu changes regularly, please trust me when I say that you just have to come here. There were a few times where I had a bite that I wanted to order 20 more of - always a good sign. And when one of the kitchen staff asked me what was my favorite course, it was like asking me to choose a favorite child. However, I was able to narrow it down to a few bites: the caviar dish, the foie gras dish, and the dessert meringue with sorbet inside. And a special thanks to the kitchen staff for curating my own custom, gluten-free experience. I can honestly say the meal was so satisfying that the thought of a wheat flour product never entered my mind the entire time. We booked Atera pretty last minute for our NYC trip so we were the one couple that sat not on the chefs counter, but we still had an amazing time. There wasn't a single dish that was a miss. The Æbleskiver was my favorite dish. It was so creamy yet had some other complex tones to the flavor. Our server was also Danish LOL, and he was super nice, had some good conversations with him. The dish was so creative with so much flavor, and I loved how some dishes came with "surprise" flavor (eg passion fruit flavor filling my mouth with seafood dish). Atera is a curated elevated experience that is so unique with its wine pairings. Also, don't sleep on the mocktails if alcohol is not your thing. Kate was our sommelier and was most memorable. I'm not a big wine person but every wine was actually delicious and not "too" anything. Very easy to over imbibe but also worth over imbibing at the same time. Every taste is so intentional and while I had some favorites, everything was sublime! Worth visiting for a special occasion, I think it would help to see what would be served. Presentation is beautiful and my favorites were a chilled razor clam with cucumber and caviar, and a warm halibut with scallop and mushroom. I had heard good things and was able to snag a spot for a special anniversary, and let me tell you - I generally try to come in without any particular expectations when trying a special place like Atera, but obviously when you're in the two star category it's hard not to have high hopes and they still blew me away. The vibe is the complete anthesis of the stuffy, tightly choreographed service you'll often find at other multiple michelin star restaurants like this. We sat at the counter on the corner towards the back wall and found the service to be kind, incredibly attentive and despite the casual atmosphere, caught onto details that I've almost never come across in the wild before. We brought a bottle for corkage because it was an anniversary and we had a special one in mind, and they were not only happy to accommodate but did a wonderful job pacing and recommending complimentary options as we went along. It's the only place I've ever had a waiter notice that I was left handed and change their service approach and placements as a result. Yes, you're paying for the quality here - but if I'm going to splurge on a special meal for a special occasion, I'm looking for an experience that sets it apart. Fantastic food is table stakes, and they blow it out of the park, but the experience on the whole really tied the whole thing together wonderfully and took it from a wonderful meal to a truly memorable one. I have every intention of returning at some point when the occasion justifies it and am excited to see what they've done since our last visit! read more

Brought my parents to the downstairs dining room. Or, they brought me here to celebrate my book being published. The circa-2024 complaint within my friend group was that Atera wasn't particularly filling. Our experience was different--not only was it a substantial meal but it was also inventive and well paced. My dad liked the music. Or, most of it, which was a nice surprise. It's nowhere near the "boisterous" playlist mentioned in the Michelin Guide, but the split-level nature of the restaurant did leave me wondering how much of the experience is consistent between upstairs and downstairs. Absolutely loved everything about Atera. The whole experience was superb from beginning to end. You can tell that so much thought and attention went into every single detail here. My husband and I enjoyed every single dish and the menu almost felt like it was telling some kind of story. Every dish was carefully put together -- exquisite and not overpowering -- delicate, yet full of story. Almost like it was trying to unlock other sensories, but was done so subtly. The restaurant felt inviting, but also very exclusive. With a 2 michellin star, you can definitely puff your chest and strut your stuff, but what made us appreciate everything even more was that the whole experience didn't feel overly pretentious. How do you measure perfection?? Fine dining in 2024 is inherently designed to be enjoyed from many angles, perspectives, and plot lines. Proof of this is found throughout the city - with an endless variety of different geographic regions, culinary concepts, and chef driven "manifestos" being featured in the Michelin guide around NYC. Each has their own merit and based on my experiences, each deserves to be there. How would I classify 2 Michelin starred Atera? For starters, it's the most technically "precise" food I've ever eaten. You'd need to do a full dissertation on physical chemistry in order to execute the technical ingenuity that's used everyday on the tasting menu here. I'll be honest, the 4 small bites (a staggered amuse) kept me within inches of the sheer culinary acumen that Atera is capable of in the best way possible. After the fois gras & roe bite, I was left on the edge of my seat, begging to be pushed head first into the gastronomic Shangri-La that lay feet from my velvet chair. I'll also be honest and say that I'm not good with wine pairings and definitely overdrank at Farra beforehand and asked for refills during the staggered amuse, not knowing what was going to happen within minutes of my crude request. What followed I can only describe as a culinary avalanche. Tuna with watermelon in a creatively composed Crudo - Halibut and scallop drenched in one of the most flavorful broths I've had in my life - a teacup filled with pork and crab with a savory foam that dissolved effortlessly into a tomato based consommé - two meat course (beef and duck) that left me without words. And THEN the desserts started!! If I was as rich as the Russian couple next to me, you'd bet your ass I'd be hiring Ronny Emborg to make me that BLUEBERRY dessert on a weekly basis. I absolutely adored ending the meal with a peach finale before moving into the petit fours as a true (adopted) Atlanta hoe. Mind you, while this culinary avalanche was set in motion I also had the wine pairing. If you know me, you know I'm pretty terrible with wine pairings because I usually get completely trashed halfway through. Atera is generous with their pours and by the end of the meal i felt like it was well worth the $198 tag on. When I return, I may skip Farra (although I highly recommend you all stop there first!! I'm just a lightweight) because Atera's wine pairing, much like the food, is engineered to deliver the optimal experience. read more

No doubt that all culinary connoisseurs must visit this restaurant. The restaurant offers a perfect set which opens you different combinations of tastes and textures. Every dish is a piece of culinary art: all of them look awesome and opens in your mouth with a pleasure when you eat it. There are serving with white asparagus, black caviar, roe, truffle, foie gras and other specialties which represent high level of the place. For drinks there are a wine pairing option, wines by glasses and by bottles, teas and beverages. The counter seating area is very comfortable: you see preparations of every serving, have enough space around you and don't touch elbows of your neighbors. Came here for a birthday celebration with a friend! The venue is medium sized with a long U-shaped chefs bar where you can watch how each course is intricately prepared. Everyone here was welcoming and wished me a happy birthday during each course. It was a bit much but appreciated the attention :) For food, everything was delcious and cooked perfectly. My favorites of the night was the Wagyu and scallops. We went all out and tried the wine pairing with the tasting menu. The sommelier was great at giving us the history of the bottles, and each poor was sizable it was hard to keep up. I thought each wine choices were great. This place was so good! I'd never been to a Michelin Star restaurant before, but my boyfriend and I were visiting New York and decided to give it a try. So glad we did! We arrived slightly early and were greeted at the door and shown our way in. It's definitely an unsuspecting location, but that was part of the fun! We were seated at a U-shaped table that looked into the kitchen. There were 4 chefs and a sommelier that greeted us. My friend chose to have the wine pairing but I stuck to water. I did mark on the survey that was sent to us that it was our anniversary but there was not mention of it dinner... maybe they don't do anything on anniversaries but I think it's strange that they would have that as an option and not do anything. The service was AMAZING. The servers and sommelier were so attentive and even folded my napkin for me when I was in the bathroom. During the main course we also spilled some sauce on our place mats and they were very quick to wipe it up. Each dish was served to us by one of the chefs and they explained what we were eating. There were 11 total and mg favorites were the king crab, scallop, wagyu, and passion fruit. I personally didn't love the squab, but that's just my personal taste and it seemed like others really enjoyed it. We finished the dinner with a pour over coffee that they made directly in front of us and was so delicious. My only complaint is that all the desserts were fruity and I wished there had been something more savory. If you're thinking about coming, do!! I had the best meal of my life at Atera for my birthday last night (no, I'm not exaggerating). We made reservations a couple of weeks out. They weren't impossible to get but still recommend planning early as there are only about ten tables in the restaurant and they only do two events per evening (only one on Monday and Friday). The restaurant doesn't have a permanent location. It moves around every so often. The latest location is in a building in Tribeca. The sommelier met us outside and greeted us by name and led us in an elevator upstairs to where the restaurant was. It was a little unusual and the building felt a bit industrial for how high end the restaurant is, but the meal and service made up for it. The best way to describe the meal is culinary theater. We were seated directly in front of the chefs who were preparing our meals with our chairs facing them. It felt like we were part of an audience. They prepared the food quietly so you could carry on your conversations. Unlike hibachi style dining where the meal prep demands your full attention and diners go to be entertained, this was more subtle (and in my opinion, artful and graceful). The tasting menu had 12 courses. We didn't know what the food would be in advance. I don't usually do well with surprises with it comes to food, but oddly, I enjoyed it here. I decided to go with the vegetarian tasting menu since I don't eat certain raw meats (this menu isn't explicitly advertised; you have to request it in advance). My husband had the omnivore menu. In my experience, some vegetarian menus aren't executed as well as the main menu, but here, I didn't feel like I missed out on anything. They matched the vegetarian dishes to their meat counterparts masterfully both in appearance and taste. For example, for one tuna entree, I had beets instead which mimicked the appearance of the raw tuna. The first few courses were "starters" meant to be eaten in one or two bites (they'll actually tell you how many bites they recommend), then we had a few "mains" which were still small and delicate. Finally we ended with two sweet courses. I'm not a big eater so I worried about being too full but it was perfectly balanced and just the right amount of food for a tasting. My husband also had a mocktail pairing which came with 6 different drinks spread out throughout the meal. I think it's wonderful they have non alcoholic options. Each of the drinks had such interesting ingredients, intentionally designed to match with the particular course. I've been to several restaurants that are experts at preparation, whether it's making the best steak or the best pasta but I think the mark of a great restaurant is creating an experience unlike you've ever had. That's what Atera achieves with its flavors. I was beyond impressed. read more

I came with a friend for their birthday, and I was blown away by all of the attention to detail. All of the staff made sure to personally wish my friend a happy birthday and tried to make the experience as immaculate as possible. The food was also so delicious. Some standouts for me were the Halibut course and the Wagyu course. For the Halibut course, the fish and scallops were cooked perfectly and played very well with the sauce. And the wagyu was cooked and seasoned perfectly. I also enjoyed the Pork course, which was served as a kind of pork belly chowder with a deeply flavored broth. In addition to the wonderful service and food, the sommelier was fantastic. We went with the wine pairing, and he made sure to go into the history of the bottle being poured. It made for a fascinating experience although it sometimes was hard to hear him over the ambient music. The wine was also so excellent and paired perfectly with each course. In particular the wines paired with the dessert courses really balanced out the sweet with a light tartness, which made for a perfect dessert experience. All in all, I can definitely say that Atera earned its Michelin stars. It was a fantastic experience, and my friend and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Came here with my wife to celebrate Valentine's Day early. The restaurant is mostly bar seating and the service was very good. Overall the menu is very safe. All the food was "fine dining warm" and borderline underseasoned. It's almost like they're afraid to push the envelope and offend anyone so they just stay in the lanes. The most memorable dish was the peeky toe crab puff with caviar. It's also a bit weird that the kitchen does minimal cooking so they're just staring at you eat for the majority of the time. I think for the price, I expected more. The other annoying thing was the single bathroom that everyone had to wait in line for. At one point there were 4 ahead of us. Atera is a good restaurant. I had made reservations not too long before the trip but was fortunate enough to grab one for an evening I preferred . What i also like is the fact that they let you cancel at least 24 hours in advance which a lot of other similar restaurants didn't allow . From the moment you step in , you're transported into a world of culinary artistry and innovation. The sleek and modern décor is both minimalist and a little understated and lets the food take center stage. However is far from being minimal -from ushering you in to seeing you off every detail is meticulously curated to enhance the overall experience. I had opted for the U shaped communal seating as that gets you the view to the kitchen .Additionally there is also a high top seating right behind the counter. The menu at Atera is a testament to creativity and craftsmanship, showcasing seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Each dish is a work of art, thoughtfully plated and bursting with flavor, textures, and aromas. With the multiple courses its hard to pick what was my favorite but if I had to the cavier custard would come on top. For me the whole meal was such a beautiful play on textures.. things just taste and felt different than how you perceive when you first see them being presented. The service is impeccable, with a team of attentive and knowledgeable staff who guide you through the dining experience . I had decided to not get wine pairing but in hindsight I feel it would have elevated the experience a notch further. We did get a bottle of red and then a few glasses in between and everything paired very well with the food . Overall, Atera is a culinary destination like no other, where art and innovation converge to create a dining experience that transcends the ordinary. One of my favorite parts of the experience was the N/A pairing, it was one of the best pairings that I've had. Each drink elevated the dish that it was paired with and also tasted great, my favorite was the raspberry with basil ice cream. Sadly, I have mixed feelings on the food. In my opinion the menu wasn't very cohesive, the order of things was interesting and by the end of the meal I was left underwhelmed. The second, and fourth courses seemed like they should've been canapés and a lot of the courses that included caviar seemed like it was just for the presentation because they added such a little amount that it didn't add anything to the taste of the dish. One of the most disappointing parts of the meal was the chicken, there were only 2 bites that were edible, the rest had the most odd texture that led to it not being able to be chewed. The halibut and scallop course would've been a lot better if the scallop hadn't started to melted into the fish (i've seen other people post this course and that didn't happen in their pictures). Looking back, there was one memorable dish from the meal which was the crab ravioli, it was so delicious. We went to Atera to celebrate my husband's birthday, and we left feeling very disappointed. A lot of the dishes were good, but nothing blew us away, and we both left really hungry (which is not something that ever really happens to us). The portions were not an appropriate size for the # of courses in this tasting menu. The service was good and the staff was nice, but this experience was in no way worth the money. The reason I am giving Atera a 1 star is because one of the "snacks" (the Æbleskiver with comte, truffle) severely burned my mouth and left me with large, visible welts and burns on the inside of my mouth. Even a day later, I am still in severe pain and struggling to eat because of the burns. I have been to many, many Michelin star restaurants and have never once experienced this situation before. While we loved every dish, the dining experience can be improved. To enter, you take a service elevator to the basement and pass through a hall that smelled deeply of cleaning solution. The entrance is next to a vet office. There were fruit flies in the dining room, which landed inside our wine glass. The servers seemed a bit chaotic at times, and at one point, some of the lights went out. Other details like serving caviar with a metal spoon was surprising to miss. If the dining experience was more seamless, it would feel more intentional and like an underground speakeasy, which can be cool, but this was not it. It's a pity because the food and flavors were amazing, but the environment was quite uncomfortable. read more

The 3-4 star reviews I've been reading on here sounds so idiotic. Like Maitre D and hosts annoyed at guests. Either the guests were quick tempered or just having a bad day, cause I'm sure the servers and hosts at 2 star Atera were doing their job. Let's get serious. If you didn't love the food, then fancy tasting menus just aren't for you. Go back to your average $20 dinner somewhere and be average. The food and service was nothing short of remarkable. Every dish we had was executed perfectly and delicious. We thought the dishes we had were better than many 3 star restaurants. Best meal of my entire life, hands down. What an experience, getting to watch these artists make magic in such a quick, effortless fashion. Though obviously, so much effort is put into each detail and into creating an exceptional dining experience. I'm still floored. So, we booked a reservation here (only seats like 15, chefs table,) for our 3rd Anniversary, and enjoyed a few bottles of champagne throughout the night. I enjoyed a pescatarian & vegetarian tasting menu, while my boyfriend solely requested the vegetarian menu. We thought it would be maybe a 6-8 course tasting menu.. it was closer to 14-15. Whew. I can't explain how life-changing each plate was. From the OTHERWORLDLY bite of sticky rice + uni + black truffle, to the insanely fresh yellowfin tuna and other fish.. I don't know how a meal could top this one any time soon. The details, details, details. The passion for food. Some dishes looked so simple but had a complexity that can't be described unless you taste for yourself. Incredibly knowledgable staff, in sync with each other and with the timing of.. it all. 2 Michelin stars and more than worthy of the price and accolade. I appreciated receiving a menu of what we ate after the meal, and all the special touches they provided for our Anniversary. We left feeling so full! So full in fact, that we had to cancel our reservation for another tasting menu we had planned for afterwards! Not mad about it. Atera was an amazing dining experience from beginning to finish, we were looking for an unforgettable meal and they more than delivered! Food: the tasting menu was exquisite, we could immediately tell that beyond the high quality ingredients, all the chefs were working in harmony to create works of art that blessed our palates. My wife is pregnant and cannot eat raw/undercooked foods, but they were able to substitute many of the ingredients which did not sacrifice quality/taste. Staff: the staff was a well-oiled machine that attended to our every need without us asking for anything. I knew they were pros when two waiters cleared two sets of dishes in perfect unison without missing a beat. Ambiance: they were playing some JAMS in the house which I did NOT expect. Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, 50 cent, Michael Jackson. I was having the time of my life! The decor was classy and we noticed they kept their kitchen spotless (we sat at the chefs counter and had a clear view of the kitchen). This was a fantastic experience to say the least. About a 2-2.5: While in town, we were able to check out Atera for dinner - we had made advance reservations, and we were excited to check out the chef's tasting menu. Our evening consisted of: +Lobster - with tomato and basil +Aebleskiver - with crab, comte, and lime +Kaluga Caviar - with custard and bonito +Iberico Ham - with tuna, onions, and peppers +Langoustine - with squash and citrus +King Salmon - with spinach, daikon, and roe +Squid - with foie gras, shrimp, and scallions +Short Rib - with sunchoke and mushrooms +Duck - prepared with pear, carrots, and balsamic +Apple - with hazelnut and vanilla +Chocolate - with currant and thyme +Lemon - with cream and chocolate +Olive Oil - citrus +Sorghum - with peanuts Note that dietary restrictions and food allergies will not be accommodated. Overall, the food was okay - I think there were a few dishes that we had enjoyed (such as the Kaluga Caviar), but the rest were just mediocre (the flavors just weren't tasty and/or they were bland). It also seemed very seafood-heavy, which is perfect for seafood lovers, but not for those who are looking to get a wide range of proteins. Service was good, but there are many waitstaff that rotate through in presenting and clearing the dishes. What was a bit confusing was that even though we were sat at the counter with the open kitchen, most dishes seem to be prepared at another kitchen instead. Atera 2 Michelin Stars Chef Ronny Emborg We had been here once before during a lull in the pandemic last year. At that time we were one of only three couples allowed in at a time for social distancing. This time they were fully open, with three couples and two four-tops. Oyster with caviar and passion fruit. Very nice start to the meal. Light and flavorful. Chicken skin over Iberian ham and rye toast. Amazing crunch and flavor! Only repeat from last year and we were super excited to see it again! Kaluga caviar over a savory custard in bonito broth. Probably the best caviar dish I have ever had. Perfect balance of taste, texture, temperature, aroma, and appearance. Tuna (paper thin!!) over king crab and a crispy hot rice block. Fantastic and creative. Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras topped with thinly sliced apple and then julienned mushroom. Savory broth base (I don't know what exactly was in that but had real Umami punch). This was amazing. Razor clam with a basil reduction, savory foam, and steamed tomatoes. I think those were rice puffs but I can't remember which type. A great combination, and well prepared. Halibut with cucumber balls and a herb sauce. Very creative and unique. Flavors very well balanced and interesting. Waygu served with a quail egg in hot broth. Amazing and perfectly prepared. Broth gently warmed the raw Waygu but did not overcook at all. Beef (I forget the cut) gently seared after some slow heating method (not sour vide so I assume dry heat oven?) with a minimalist broth base. Great follow up to the Waygu. Lamb with sweet peas and zucchini and a emulsion of some root vegetable. No gamey flavor. Fantastically presented and prepared. I paid extra for a 1901 Madeira. Best dessert wine I have ever had. It was incredible. The sommelier stated that they stumbled upon this vintage and that it is highly unlikely I will ever find it again. Super happy I partook. Lemon dessert (processed somehow) over a lemon buttermilk sauce. Really nicely done and unique. They gave us an extra dessert... a caramel foam over a sweet chocolate mousse (if I remember correctly). It was perfectly salty to complement the sweeter previous and following dishes. A set of four mini desserts; strawberry-ginger, coffee-chocolate, sorghum-peanut, citrus-olive oil. Fun and creative! They play classic and 80s through 90s rock during service. It actually works really well with the almost silent and graceful work of the team. Taste- 10/10 Creativity- 10/10 Presentation- 10/10 Service- 10/10 Ambience- 10/10 Honestly I think they deserve a third Michelin star. Perhaps they will receive it one day.
