My mother was seen at Atlantic Brain and Spine by Cassidy Pate-Moore, PA, following an acute spine injury. She had fallen onto her back in a boat and was evaluated in the Wilmington emergency department, where x-rays showed an acute spine injury. A physician referred her to this clinic, and she was scheduled with Ms. Pate-Moore. The visit was disappointing in nearly every way a clinical encounter should not be. Ms. Pate-Moore was dismissive of my mother's pain and of her requests. Rather than opioids, my mother asked about calcitonin, a well-supported option for short-term pain relief with this kind of injury. Instead of initiating it herself, Ms. Pate-Moore directed my mother to raise it with her primary care provider. I then called Ms. Pate-Moore to discuss my mother's case and her pain management. Rather than listening to our concerns, this provider was again dismissive, and became combative during the call, raising her voice to say she would not allow others to dictate her treatment. read more

Saw Dr. Hoffman and found a considerate, kind, expert, open-minded Doctor who listened to my concerns, did an exam of my feet after reviewing my Diagnostic images, X-Rays, MRIs and CT-Scans. He offered multiple options for me, Physical Therapy and some possible future injections to avoid having to do serious surgery which is not a good option at my age. read more

After waiting several weeks for my appointment I was seen by a PA who stated that I should have come in sooner and I could have been treated. Nice but you had no sooner appointment to give me. Stated that there was nothing he could do to help me but set up a follow up appointment. Why? You already said you could not help me. Set me up for pain management, what a joke they are as well. Waited for 3 weeks to be seen than got a call back which stated they would discuss my case and get back to me. Never did. This has happened over nearly a 2 month time period. I have additionally made a couple of calls to the office and have been treated unkindly each time. In short they have been a terrific waste of my time. Zero care offered or given. "I had a very disappointing experience at this facility. After an MRI was ordered by Catherine Zimel (PA, ) I was told by Ms Zimel I needed surgery for C3-C4 and C7-T1. However, the process that followed was unprofessional and dismissive. Dr. Thomas at the facility reviewed my scans and, rather than discussing the case with me, simply passed my file to another surgeon with the note: 'Do you want to do it?' When I finally met with the second surgeon, I was told he would not operate. The reason given was that they didn't believe it would help my neck pain. Most concerning was the surgeon's dismissive attitude toward my myelopathy diagnosis. He actually stated, 'You are 74 years old, how bad could the myelopathy get?' This is an incredibly reckless and ageist comment to make about a condition involving spinal cord compression. To be told that my mobility and neurological health aren't worth protecting because of my age is unacceptable. I have since sought a second opinion elsewhere where my concerns are being taken seriously. I would not recommend this facility for complex spinal issues." read more

I saw Maria stoight P A. She fired me as a patient do to to my need to meet my surgeon. I want to have security by meeting surgeon prior. Went into her room you could instantly tell she had a attitude twords me. I began to cry she told me to get my self under control when I say crying no sounds just tears. I needed her help since it seems the Pa Maria has all the control in the office. She is rude over worked and took it out on me. Still need help and it seems they have black balled me from other surgeons. Even tho she is only a Pa she has all the control. I was referred to Dr Alex Thomas when I was diagnosed with a pituitary adenoma. Dr Thomas explained the procedure, my options, and how he teams up with a local ENT surgeon to perform a Endonasal Transsphenoidal Surgery. Success! Surgery was done in NOVANT Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Everyone was kind, caring and very supportive throughout the pre-surgery, durning and post op. ZERO stars...had to put one star to be able to post this review! This practice is a cluster F--k! I had been having neck and shoulder issues for quite some time and tried other means to improve the situation with little benefit. So I call Atlantic (no)Brain and Spine the first week of October 2023. I was given an appointment the following month in November but stated that if they had a cancellation and could get me in sooner to please call. They had a cancellation for Oct 11 and I went in and saw Dr. Thomas' NP. She was useless. The questions I had she stated she had to get back to me on. After a couple of weeks and not hearing back I called a couple of times and left messages. Never got a call back. Fast forward to April 2024 when my Emergo Ortho PT recommended I try to see Dr Huffman. So I called the office back and requested an appointment to see this provider. I was told that you could not switch providers unless the providers approve. So the scheduler called me back the next day saying she got the approval to schedule me with Dr. Huffman. I requested to not see a nurse or NP due to the lack of anything with Dr. Thomas's NP. I was given an appointment with Dr. Huffman for April 30, 2024. I went in for my appointment and waited 90 minutes. After this wait someone from the back comes out and tells me that Dr. Huffman won't see me as he did not approve my appointment. How could it have even been scheduled then if he did not approve it?????? Either the office scheduler did not get the approval and gave me an appointment anyhow which I doubt or Dr. Huffman either 1. did not feel like working 2. has some memory issues in which case I dodged a big bullet....3. he is just an ass. Why would someone not tell me when I first got to the appointment and checked in that I would not be seen instead of wasting my time for 90 minutes no less? So I went and spoke with the office manager Brandy and told her what happened. She state that I no-showed for my November appointment. I told her the office gave me an earlier date of Oct 11th and they did not take the Nov appointment off their calendar. Brandy also stated they have a new office computer system and it has been an adjustment. Fine....but I am the patient and I have to pay for the office's screw ups with their new system? Brandy seemed appalled at how I was treated and said she would talk to Dr. Huffman and get back to me. Well guess what....no call back!!! What a BIG surprise. And the funny/sad thing is, that I too am a provider and I would never....have never treated a patient in this manner. I value my patients and know they have come to me for what I specialize in hoping I can help them. I always do my best....all walks of life....no matter. Dr. Beecher is our hero! He first saw my husband on Friday. Even though he wasn't the doctor on call that weekend, he performed surgery on Saturday. My husband is home and walking, with a walker for now, but he's gaining strength each day. We highly recommend him. Thank you Dr. Beecher! read more

Horrible experience! Tried to make an appointment yesterday and the receptionist wouldn't do it without a referral, our insurance doesn't need a referral, they even called them. When I questioned her about a referral she said they need your medical records, then say that. I'm in a lot of pain, I've seen a specialist in another state, I offered to come in sign the release form and then would they make an appointment, nope. Maybe you can get in to see the PA in a week and a half from now once we get your records. She even told me all they do is surgery, that is not true, according to there website. Why would she state that, there is a lot of procedures that can be treated without surgery. They need to replace that person and get someone with compassion and a brain and listen to what people are saying. If that is there policy they need to change it and start taking care of people in a sympathetic and professional manner. read more

This may have been the worst experience I ever had dealing with a professional office, either medical or legal or any other trade service. The office staff is uninformed and have told untruths to my wife and myself. And if u question their poor decisions, they will hang up on you. If the office staff is to be a reflection of the provider This speaks poorly for the provider. Please run do not walk from this office. read more

I recently was treated by Dr. Alex Thomas for an S1/L5 fusion of my vertebrae and I highly recommend him. He's friendly, informative, and a commensurate top notch professional within his field. I'm extremely happy with (although still healing) how concise, precise, and expeditious the procedure was (our NHRMC Hospital Staff was equally amazing during my overnight stay). He spared me a good bit of pain from some others I knew that had undertaken similar procedures but experienced complications with their respective surgeons process, results, and treatment(s), and even their attitudes. His medical assistant (whom took care of my scheduling/insurance questions/etc. was also a pleasure to work with). The front office staff itself had some challenges (room for improvement in customer service, attitude, communication, organization, and otherwise) throughout the process which prompted me to be more proactive although in this day and age, you have to be anyway... especially concerning ones health! Dr. Thomas's PA promptly reconciled the issues posed by the front desk and ensured not only was I taken care of, but all of my experiences were not just simply addressed, but used to continually better the practices staff patient experience. This showed immense integrity in leadership. I'm guessing this is why some may get the wrong perception (via review rating alone) on the caliber of surgeons we have access to here. A 3.4 star rating average is highly misleading and done so in poor taste by past reviewers for the talent here. All minutiae aside where the rubber truly meets the road, I highly recommend Dr. Thomas and entrust him with anything and everything of mine within his respective field of expertise. The provider was fine but-----I can't say much about the rest of the visit. From check in on it was not very well managed. They checked my insurance and even though I had complete documentation showing I had met my full deductible they still had me pay a large amount toward the deductible and also a rather large amount for the "percentage" I may be responsible for after insurance paid. They actually collected more from me - BEFORE I ever saw the provider than was even billed. Now I can't seem to get the refund from the practice. I've worked in medical for over 30 years so I do realize it is a business and they have to collect their fees but they also have a moral and legal obligation to refund overpayments in a TIMELY manner. read more
