We got the picked herring and kibbeling, which are the main staples here. The pickled herring was, well, something you either love or don't. It has somewhat of a gelatinous texture that can be off-putting, but when you take a bite with the sides of sweet pickles and onions, it shines. The Kibbeling was out of this world. Perfectly fried with a crunchy batter that had a hint of, hmmm, curry, maybe. It was amazing. Although the batter was thick and tasty, it didn't outdo the delicious cod. The staff here was friendly, and having this Dutch food along a canal in Amsterdam made for a memorable experience. Raw Herring is one of the traditional top Dutch snacks, it is typically served with chopped onions and pickle. A cuisine, I think would be very much popular in Japan. When I lived in Japan, it was hard for me to stomach raw fish. So I am still trying to build an acquire taste for herring. Now as far as for kibbling, I love it! Reminds me of back in the day when I was in the south, enjoying some deep fried fish.

The staff welcomed us in and were very helpful. We went with a pickled herring sandwich and kibbeling, which is fried cod chunks. Both are traditional Dutch foods and came highly recommended. The sandwich was delightful - perfectly soft bread enveloping briny pickled fish, pickles, and onions? Yes! The pickled herring is not for everyone, and we had already tried it elsewhere on its own. Having it in a sandwich was a better experience. The Kibbeling was very good - well breaded, but not greasy, and letting the fish flavor through. There isn't really anywhere to sit, but you can stand at some tables outside or snack inside the establishment, as well. We would be regulars here, for sure, if we lived close by. It's a quick ride on the train to get here and we happened to be having lunch around the corner (Restaurant De Kas) but got there a bit early. We had specifically come during spring to ensure we could eat as much new catch herring as possible... so even though we had lunch in just a few minutes we felt that a few herring wouldn't spoil our appetite ;D We ordered three herring (€2.25/each = $2.50), which were sliced, split amongst two plates and garnished with chopped onion and pickles, the standard accompaniment. We went outside to a bench in front of the store to consume them as there isn't really any seating inside. Plus, the place isn't really a restaurant as they mostly sell fresh fish for cooking at home. These were absolutely delicious; the little fish were by far the best we'd ever had (and actually the best - and cheapest - we would end up having over the weekend). We had eaten new catch herring back in New York previously at Grand Central Oyster Bar and Russ & Daughters, but nothing can compare with eating it in Holland.
