Although we were there on a nice sunny day, this would also be a great spot to visit if the weather wasn't cooperating. Arresting pieces of public art come into view before you get to the entrance of this former textile factory. Too bad they've been placed rather unphotogenically in the parking lot (Photo 8). They've done an excellent job renovating the buildings and sprucing up the grounds. There are three upmarket components to this expansive complex: art galleries, retail stores, and cafes. It can make for a pleasant browsing experience should you be in the mood for it, but if not, it illustrates a rather polarizing divide between the haves and have-nots in San Miguel de Allende. If you're seriously considering a purchase here, you know which camp you're in. There's certainly enough outdoor furniture and ornate bric-a-brac here to fill your summer home. The only items Jamie W and I bought were a pair of iced coffees and an artful slice of apple pie at Geek & Coffee, a charming terrace cafe on the grounds (Photo 16), a pleasant break before we headed back to town. The downside is that so many of the shops feel quite redundant that it's easy to bypass businesses when you know you'll see another shop selling basically the same things... magnets, masks, coasters, ashtrays, Virgin Mary plaques, you name it (Photo 8). There are two covered blocks of vendors after which we found ourselves in Mercado Ignacio Ramírez, a more open space featuring fresh produce, flower stalls, and fast local food stalls. It would've been more tempting to us if we didn't already have lunch at Jacques nearby (review: https://yelp.to/1eEKC6YG8X). It's a great place to shop for souvenirs and the people working the stalls are super friendly. There are a couple of good restaurants nearby and some require a wait, so the Mercado is a great place to walk around before your meal. Highly recommended for local color.

The sets they sell all have consistent designs and sizes - whereas some sets in the mercado can have some variations that make the sets look cheap. Great place to buy a gift.

Gorgeous ceramics shop right off the main square. They don't appear to have a website or much of an…read moreonline presence, but you can find them on their Facebook-- /ceramicalopezmexico. They have great cookware and serving ware that's clearly high quality and finished by hand. Much nicer than what you'll find in the market or one of the general tourist stores. Of note they're cash only and since many of their bigger pieces are $1000 MX -- come prepared. Their shipping fees are pretty insane too. If you want to purchase from them, be sure to have some extra space in your suitcase.
