I've been going to this office for a few years and really enjoy the care and service that I receive here. Dr. Tran is a very knowledgeable optometrist and his staff are very helpful and courteous. With my previous optometrist, I would get a rushed 5 minute exam with the doctor and the rest of the appointment is spent with a sale clerk who would try to upsell me expensive designer frames. At this office, Dr. Tran takes the time to thoroughly examine my eyes and address all my concerns. He goes over important eyecare education that I had never received at any other offices even though I had been wearing glasses/contacts for over 20 years. If you want a quick eye exam to get your glasses or contacts, then any office would do. They took my dental insurance instead of primary. Didn't have the competence to know the difference. They scheduled me an appointment and had me come in. Then after going to appointment. In the office told me they wouldn't see me because they don't take my insurance and don't want to "chase me down" for the bill. They wasted my time and were very unprofessional to schedule the appointment, then tell me they wouldn't take my insurance in the office, sending me on my way without an exam. Dr. Tran and his assistants are so helpful, kind, honest, and considerate. It really matters to them that their patients get the right treatment without having to break their bank. They're very open and are willing to explain everything that's going on with your eyes. When I came in for my appointment, they used the new technology to get a clear image of my eyes in lieu of a dilation. This cost me even less than the Medi-Cal rate because, again, it matters more to Dr. Tran that he can examine my eyes rather than make extra profit. In addition, they went into detail with explaining everything that was happening in my eyes. Since they found a scratch/scar on my left eye, they kindly gave me a referral letter for my primary doctor to be able to send me to an ophthalmologist to further check out my eyes. Regardless of the minor complication, they were able to provide me with an updated Rx and even explained the add-ons recommended for the glasses I would need since my eyes have gotten significantly worse. Unfortunately, my insurance only covers the eye exam, so I would need to pay the entire cost out of pocket. They gave me a quote of $415--pretty rough. However, since I have possible upcoming changes to my insurance, they suggested to hold off for a little while and see what help I can get when my insurance changes. They didn't pressure me or make me feel obligated to purchase right away. So if you are in search of an optometry, this is the place. So today, several months after my exam with this doctor, I was informed that the prescription was COMPLETELY wrong. Luckily, I was able to use the same frames. I'm also still opting in for the Optomap retinal imaging option as Dr. Tran is currently a holder of that advanced technology (limited supply right now) so he can provide a more detailed assessment of my eyes' internal workings - I found out I had some internal bleeding in my right eye through that! Always so informative and thoughtful in making sure I understand how to maintain my eyes' health and how to protect them. I came in here for eye check up Due to ulcer in my eyes after sleeping on my contact lens and getting glasses prescription. I would say- i dint like my experience. First, he did not check my eyes- it was his student who did. They did not provide me with a new glasses prescription because they said my eyes are too dry and they cannot het the accurate prescription and requested me to come back. Ok, my eyes were dry- but i still need new glasses prescription to see better. The current glasses that i have is about 4 yrs old since i really do not use it. So i dont get new glasses every 2 yrs. Second, the optometrist explained to me that i shouldnt be sleeping with my contact lens. I told him that it was prescribed to me. And of course it was more flattering to keep contacts on rather taking it off. Then he said- his professor gave them a scenario- if anyone was told if peopel could wear their underwear for 30 days, would i do it? Same with socks. He said- same goes with contact lens. This advise could have been brought up in a more decent way rather than comparing undies to contact lens. Later on, he told me that his students/interns told him that he was rude to me. I did not complain at that time. I just wanted to get over with the eye exam that was useless. read more

So i'm laughing out loud now at Tran's reply. I realize what his problem is: he's like a child that doesn't like to be told he's wrong and doesn't want to listen to anyone else's opinion but his own. My "truthful review" is that yes, i admit i have astigmatism, had it since i started wearing soft contacts at 12. i'm 42 now and am kind of used to the fact that due to the astigmatism i can only be corrected to 20/25 and being the honest mature person that i am, i freely admit that. With both eyes together i can see 20/20 and that's what matters as i don't walk around or drive with one eye shut. Yes I could barely see the big E when Tran gave me the contacts he said I needed. As for him being so kind as to not bill my insurance...if that were true i don't know why Linda at my new doctor's office had to call and get authorization for a 2nd opinion since VSP had already said i had my annual exam with Tran. She had to talk to them and I had to get on the phone and explain why i was looking for a 2nd opinion. He of course didn't bill for the contact lens fitting portion of my benefits because he COULD NOT fit me with contacts. VSP did agree with my "ridiculous" complaint and looked in to it and the complaint will remain in Tran's file which is all i wanted. As for me being truthful and honest in my review, i don't see how i've been anything but. if you would like to talk to me more about it please contact me i'm more than happy to give you details, names, dates, access to my records, whatever you need. I went to a new doctor, was fitted with Acuvue Oasys soft lenses not astigmatism lenses and i can see 20/20 with both eyes (and the contacts are comfortable!) so i didn't have to switch to hard contacts as Tran told me. I've been a personal friend of Khanh's (Dr. Tran's) for many years, as we both attended the same karate dojo since high school, I think. Just being straight about where I'm coming from...told him I recently read the negative reviews (he didn't bring it up), and that I had something to say. So here it is. I've fully read the negative reviews, and look, I can understand exactly where they're coming from. I understand that in some circumstances, what he's asking them to do may be next to impossible, due to work schedules, etc. But that's the thing...those with the negative reviews have a very specific thing in common. Dr. Tran was holding true to his beliefs, that in order to provide the best service, he's trying to do the best for your eyes, not the best for what you might want, out of convenience. We're used to getting pretty much what we want these days. Heck knows, I wear my contacts more than he likes, and he'd have to have me physically restrained in order to make me wear my glasses in place of the contacts. But he even (figuratively) forced me to wear my glasses for 2 weeks to allow my eyes time to heal up so he could correctly fit me with contacts (Oasys, if you care). So it's not just you, he does it to the people he knows and is friends with as well. And that, to me, shows consistency, care, and integrity. Perhaps more so than the 1 star reviews these other people are giving. In the end, if he fitted you exactly like you wanted, maybe you would have been perfectly fine...but maybe, maybe sometime down the line, your eyes are going to be in a worse condition. He's the one that knows eye health, not me, so I figure it's in my best interest to listen to him, whether or not I like it. Now, to the general part of my review. His staff is friendly and efficient, and Doc Tran is nerdy, but he's got a good sense of humor. His office contains some of the most highly sophisticated and modern equipment in OC, which can, in certain circumstances, allow him to see the start of an eye disease 3 years before it might otherwise show itself. He's passionate about what he does, and it shows in the care he provides. He takes the time with his patients...shows them the pictures of what he's seeing (their own eyes, specifically), and explains what exactly is happening and what they need to do in order to prevent further damage or to heal. This may be over the top for some, but if you want top quality care for your eyes, you need look no further. read more

I needed a new prescription as quick as possible in order to get new glasses that was very much needed so i found this place on yelp due to my doctor being fully booked and decided to give it a; try worst mistake they told me it would be 160 originally I get in and they now brought up to 180. when it came to the prescription portion of the testing which they didn't tell me there was two portions i was paying for they weren't able to do my prescription because of my eyelash extensions and I was told that I needed to remove them in order to get my eyes looked at (which would cost me more money and hassle) and when I asked for a refund they told me no that I could get it for the prescription part to which i complied but then I got sent back home two different times without getting my money and when I finally did get my money I only got $23 back out of the 180 I paid originally so the original testinf was apparently almost 160 itself I will never come here again nor will I ever recommend this place to anyone this has been the most unprofessional encounter I've ever had with any doctor or office before read more

Wearing glasses since high school, I've had to go to many optometrists in my life. Having all types of insurance, both really good, and not so good, has taken me to both extremes of the optometry office experience. I have to say my insurance this time around wasn't top of the line, so I too was limited to what office I could go to. Luckily Dr. Tran accepted my insurance, and was very glad he did. When you first walk into the office, nothing out of the ordinary, a clean little office with glasses displayed in cases along the walls. As I walked up to the receptionist, I believe her name was Nicole, I noticed two things: 1, two huge posters saying something about best optometrist for 2010 and 2011, I think, and 2, how nice and genuine the girl was with me. She asked for the usual information and the exam started. I was first taken to a little room with equipment I've never seen before. During the whole process I kept thinking to myself, let's see if this Doctor really is "the best Optometrist". There were two machines here, one was for HD vision and the other to take a picture of the inside of your eye. Both were harmless, no pain, no puff of air, you just sit and click, click, you're done. At first I wasn't impressed with the HD machine, the girl was saying how with that technology, if I choose to get it, it would make me see in "HD". Later on, after I got my glasses, I totally "see" what they were talking about. What was impressive right off the bat was that eye picture machine! I have never seen my eye from the inside, but more importantly, I learned a lot about my eye. I noticed that both the staff, and the Doctor give you a lot of information, in a good way, so that you learn what exactly they are doing to you. For me that helped a lot because I am a very logical kind of guy. After the machines, you then see the Doctor. He is a fairly young man, Vietnamese, average height and seemed serious when you first walk in. I sat down in the exam chair and he starts to show me different pictures of the eye, healthy ones and not so healthy ones. Definitely learned a whole lot from listening to him. What I liked most about the Doctor was that he took his time to explain everything in detail. Who would have known that the serious looking Doctor was actually funny too! After the whole exam, I was thinking to myself, "this is going to be expensive because he spent a lot of time with me and I bet he wants me to buy expensive glasses too!" I was wrong there too! The receptionist looked at what the Doctor prescribed, showed me all the options and gave me the space and wiggle room to choose what I really wanted and could afford. Of course I choose the HD Raybans! All in all: -Very friendly staff -Extremely thorough exam by the Doctor -Great prices -A lot of high tech machines Side note: Make sure you set aside a good 40 min or so for the whole exam, that's how long it took me, worth it though. Also, I hardly ever write reviews on yelp, and when I do, they are really short, but for some reason I was really pleased with this office and they deserve good feed back. My family now goes there, my mother, brother, and hopefully my new nephew that will going at his 6 months. (Didn't know babies had to go to the optometrist until I went to Dr. Tran's) Now I see why he won those best optometrist things 2 years in a row. =) read more

So I get this reply and yes I'm going to share it. First off my eye care regime was fine until I was no longer able to order contacts online. I work for a living and unlike a dr I don't pull 6 figures. I was up front and honest about this fact and that I really needed another pair. 2 things that strike me with dr. Trans reply was if you knew my eyes would be better in a week then why would you still refuse and 2 yes you spent considerable time telling me that I would have to wait 2 weeks for glasses and I could not wear my contacts. Again what was I supposed to do to see. Within that week yes I went somewhere else and was able to get the things I needed. Got that picture of my eye and oh my my eyes are fine no sign of infection at all. If you had treated the patient instead of trying to keep your ego intacted you would have seen that. I understand that in mds and surgeons hubris is common never thought I would see an eye dr having it to. read more
