I finally got around to eating here a few days ago with my best friends in town from the U.S. in tow, and it was love at first sight and bite. You'll be charmed by the authentic feel of a cozy Spanish tapas joint, and if the weather agrees you can sit outside at one of the giant wooden barrel 'tables.' Inside, massive legs of jamon hang from the bar, earthy wall tones and Spanish themed décor add to the ambiance. Our server came over with the menu, hand delivered on a chalk board from table to table. It turns out that La Cita is a family affair, our waitress the aunt of the young couple that quit their corporate day jobs to open the joint. The menu was divided into three sections, ascending by price. From column A, we sampled the Pan Tomate (bruschetta), Pan Jambon (ham and bread), Patatas Bravas (fried potatoes in spicy, creamy tomato sauce) and Omelette Espagnole (egg and potato fritatta). All were excellent, and reasonably priced at €2-4 each. From the sea, there were mussels and calamari, and an Iberian cheese plate to finish the meal. The seafood and cheese were slightly more expensive at around €6-8 per plate, but made up for the extra price in quality and larger portion sizes. And what Tapas meal would be complete without a pitcher of Sangria? We ordered a liter of the red stuff, full of juicy alcoholic fruit, not too sweet, and at €8, a steal to get the three of us happily buzzed. When the bill came, we had our attentive server split it in three, and my jaw nearly dropped that the total bill for 8 tapas plates, a liter of booze, and 2 hours of enjoyable dining came out to €15.80 per person, the price one could expect to pay for an entrée at most of the "restos" in Aix. Before leaving out server came by to wish us a great rest of our vacation and a safe return for my visiting friends, sealing in my 5 star review for La Cita, and guaranteeing that I will be visiting again.

Being American, I made us a 7:15pm reservation. When we arrived the restaurant was empty, with only two tables occupied... my wife started to get a bit nervous. But we then remembered that any reservation before 8 is a very American thing to do! Around 8pm the restaurant began filling up with locals; we were at the right spot! Being out of the Old Port area, we didn't pay tourist pricing and probably had the best lobster we've had in a long time. The service staff is very friendly and interacted with us in English. They were having fun and were very attentive to us in explaining the menu. If you're in Marseille, this spot is a "Can't Miss"!

This restaurant seems to specialize in raw and cold (crab and lobster) seafood, and it is excellent. We ordered oysters, uni, and clams and all were amazingly fresh, clean, and flavorful. There was no mignonette or any sauce and everything was served with butter and bread. The combination was surprisingly good. The oysters and clams were briny and bright, while the uni was pure umami and not oceany like Santa Barbara or Hokkaido varieties often are. They have an English menu, and the wait staff were attentive and spoke English as well. Worth a special detour if you're ever in Marseille. Update since being in Nice: We have yet to find a place in Nice that even compares. We were hopeful that Peixes, with its incredible number for 5 star reviews, would be comparable. While decent, they were not even in the same class.

We were a group (works really well for groups!) and we had shrimp and oysters to start, along with a simple wine that was perfectly matched to the food. Everything was really fresh. Next, a choice of either local grilled sea bass or daurade (in French, bream in English?), a good size fish, perfectly cooked and with a side of homemade fries TO DIE FOR. They kept offering me more but I tried to stay reasonable... Chez Claire is one of the best restaurants I've been to in a while, just a combination of good things: came out feeling good and not stuffed, having eaten excellent fresh seafood, being treated well by nice people, and all at a very reasonable price, probably not even half of what restaurants on the port would charge for a lesser meal. The style of cooking was simple but good which really enhanced the fish. The hosts were really nice and friendly, and dynamic. The only thing I can think of that was missing was explanation about the seafood as they clearly know a lot about their field, and I think its enjoyable and interesting to learn, but that's just me, and I admit I didn't think to actually ask them on the spot. The other remarkable aspect is the neighborhood. Belle de Mai neighborhood It is not a place known for evenings, restaurants or tourism, and you have to find it, so it is definitely off the beaten track for many people including both Marseillais and tourists. But it's near the Friche Belle de Mai, and it's also an authentic neighborhood that is pretty cool to walk through (like for an afternoon) once you've seen the more mainstream sights.

I came for an early lunch in a sunny for me Saturday and walked in soon after noon - and was the first lunch customer. The waiter / owner spoke just enough English and I just enough French for me to choose a smoked duck cake for my starter. I had that with a glass of white wine. Both to die for. I ordered a casserole with Strasbourg sausage and mushrooms for my main course and asked the waiter to recommend an appropriate glass of wine. He brought a glass from the same winery - again sensational. The owner told me he loves running a small place where he can make people happy because he can ensure every meal is excellent. It works for me!

It was certainly difficult not to feel welcome here with the enthusiasm and the witty treatment we got. The menu changes constantly and there is therefore only options you'll see on the board, if you can decipher it. With a limited knowledge of French and not the best ability to decipher swirly French handwriting on a blackboard, I was happy that we got the short version explained in English. We had starters and cannelloni for our main course and a glass of white wine. The portion of cannelloni was rather big (by our lunch standards), so we had to give up at some point, but it was not for the lack of trying our best. The food was good, but could have done well with a bit more oomph in the taste, though I was very satisfied with my wine.
