This little bakery is outstanding. I haven't had bread this good since I left Europe (France for bread) a few years ago. We had breakfast there twice during our stay. The focaccia is outstanding. The raspberry tarts are incredible. In fact every bite we tried was delicious. We took Salmon sandwiches back with us and they are incredible. The protein bars are delicious. The staff is amazing. The iced coffee is really good. This is such a wonderful place and I can't wait to return! read more

Artisan sour dough bread. All breads and pastries are always very good. Beautiful French bakery, always friendly and very helpful. If you haven't gone into their tiny shop you must go in, you will not be disappointed. They also have sweets and savories and even some cheese. You must stop in. read more

Great little bakery shop in Nelson with the most beautiful & delicious French breads, it's my 2nd time in the shop and it's been 5 years since I last visited the town. There is absolutely nothing like the smell of fresh baked bread and pastries coming from an authentic french bakery and of course my old home town has one of the most delicious bakeries in North America. The earlier you arrive in the morning the better because they do sell out of their lovely treats. Amazing Baguettes and pastries; I dare you to go in and just pick one item. I like to opt for at least three pastries and one baguette; then pick up some fresh sheep cheese and a bottle of lovely B.C. wine from the grand and head to the lake for some lovely Kootenay chillaxing... It doesn't get more organic, local and fresh then Au Soleil Levant; at sunrise. If you live in Nelson, this should be your go to place for your bread (as I'm sure it probably is). If you are lucky enough to visit Nelson, get their early so you can get the best selection of treats from this lovely little French Canadian bakery. read more

The bread is absolutely delicious. As far as I am concerned, this is the ONLY place to buy french bread in Nelson. Baguettes are usually still warm and steaming when I get them. For some reason, I have never experienced a problem with them being out of what I am looking for - good timing, I guess. I have also tried a few of the sweet pastries and they are also delicious. Out of principle, I cannot give a 5-star review to a business that does not accept credit cards or Interac in 2012, which occurs shockingly often here in Nelson. Come on! As soon as Au Soleil Levant starts accepting plastic, I will edit my review. Also, the owner (or whomever is wearing the beret) is not particularly friendly. Cheer up, buddy. Au Soleil Levant is a fantastic little back-alley French Canadian artisan bakery that churns out heaps of exquisite French baked goods. My favourite are the fougasse: small savoury stuffed breads filled with anything from mushrooms, green onions, garlic, and parmesan to bacon, white onion, sweet and spicy peppers, and gouda. They use rennet-free (vegetarian) cheese, and the fougasse are available in a variety of doughs including whole wheat, spelt, and their incredible sourdough. The first time I tried a fougasse I decided to have one every day that week so I could try them all. You can't go wrong with any one of them, but my favourite is the red onion on sourdough with its salty olives, delicious cheeses, and just the right amount of filling-to-bread ratio. Everything we purchased was exceptional. In fact, we enjoyed it so much we went back and got goodies for our road trip back home. Keep in mind this cash only, a bit difficult to find. It seemed like we were walking for awhile down back alleys. We walked from a waterfront hotel. Then viola a little bake shop with delicious goodies waiting.
