What an experience. I had heard about Entre Cimes et Racines' hobbit hole probably six years ago…read moreand only got to reserving the place this spring. Needless to say, the earliest we could get the place was December- i.e. you need to book this place months in advance because it's SUPER popular. I can vouch for that it was well worth the wait, especially in these times of limited vacationing options. The hobbit hole is exactly as advertised: the cutest, most Tolkien, little earth ship you ever did see. Specifically, this house has no running water or electricity but certain other houses do at Entre Cimes et Racines. Inside there was an indoor compost toilet, which typically didn't smell too bad but occasionally was noticeable (and was certainly frosty on the behind this time of year). Within the Hobbit there's also a small wood fire stove which kept us very toasty all the way down to -17 C weather. This is definitely partially because the space is very small: for two people this was perfectly intimate, but I wouldn't be keen to bring many more people to the space. For basic amenities (water, candles, fire wood, toilet paper) a staff member came by every morning to top us up, which was consistent and great. Without fail, every staff member we met was a delight. One thing I'll mention was that the Hobbit wasn't super equipped for cooking gear: for example, I would highly recommend packing a good chef's knife. However, I may just be a kitchen diva like that. In terms of the larger grounds, the place is well spread out and you definitely get a good sense of privacy within your accommodations. That said, the property isn't enormous and we quickly exhausted our strolling options for the pathways throughout the place, which wasn't the worst thing. While the labyrinth was very cool, I definitely appreciated above all checking out the other chalets. For other eco architecture nerds: this place is dreamy. I can't wait to visit again and check out one of the other houses.

What a neat place. If you really want to get away from it all, this is the place to go. We recently stayed at the Hobbit House here and its just as cute as the pictures show. My young son loved it. They also have many fun activities to do during your stay. My son and I explored the huge labyrinth that they have. He loved it so much that he did it twice. They also have a garden and some sort of scavenger/treasure hunt but we didn't do the last activity. There are also numerous trails to explore as well as a climbing wall. The shower facilities are very nice, clean, and modern. They also have Wi-Fi in the main building as well, which was nice because there is no cell phone reception there. My family really enjoyed their stay here and we definitely want to go back sometime in the future.

The kitchen had everything we needed to cook our own meals every day, which saved tons of money (restaurants in Montreal are expensive). The best part of the apartment is the gorgeous deck, where we spent every evening enjoying dinner, wine, and relaxing. The apartment is about a 10-15 minute walk to Marche Jean-Talon, which is the first thing we did in Montreal-- stocked up on tons of fresh fruits, veggies, local meats and eggs and bread. The apartment is only 5 minutes walk to the Beaubien Metro (subway), which we used almost every day to explore the sights of Montreal. The subway is clean and extremely efficient, and cost-effective if you buy an Opus card. Alain was a nice host (he and his wife live downstairs), and although we didn't need anything, he made sure we knew we could always knock on his door if we did. The rental process itself was easy, and he immediately refunded to us our security deposit after we checked out. Overall, a wonderful experience, and we can't wait to go back!
