I sought reunification therapy believing my child's emotional safety would be the highest priority…read more I was repeatedly told that therapy would not move forward unless my child felt safe. However, my experience was very different. Despite my child's repeated statements that he did not feel safe, documented concerns from his treating mental health providers, and evidence regarding the family history that I believed was highly relevant, a recommendation was made to separate him from me. As a survivor of domestic violence, this experience was devastating. I left feeling that my child's voice was not truly heard and that trauma-informed care was not applied in the way I had been led to expect. I hope future families receive a process where a child's expressed safety concerns are consistently given meaningful consideration.
