Animals are in crowded cages, water is cloudy, and many of the animals look like they're on their last leg. Ticket prices were too high for what we got and you have to pay extra for coins to do anything. Do not eat the food there. Trust me. Save your money and go to a place that treats their animals right, have better trained staff and isn't in an actual strip mall. Was kind of excited to visit this place since we were visiting Austin and we were satisfied and somewhat disappointed. Disappointed because it was way smaller than I thought so our tour was within 30mins or less because none of my teenage kids wanted to feed anything. I was satisfied because they had a lot of fun things to do such as petting and feeding the sea creatures and the animals. You can buy these tokens at the cashiers and use them to buy food. There are a lot of cool creatures and tons of opportunities to take pictures. Solid first visit to the Austin Aquarium. Had no idea that one existed in the area, so I am grateful they exist for visiting friends and families with small kids. Price was ~$20 for adults, and you could easily spend 2-3 hours there (or more if you'd like to spend a whole day and probably more money) visiting all the exhibits. They especially enjoyed the "interactive" sessions that require a few extra dollars. But, it's a great way to touch and pet several of the animals up close, while feeding them and getting great photo ops. They've got plenty of food/snack options if you get hungry along the way, and there is seating for anyone who gets tired on the journey. Would definitely recommend it for anyone going to this type of place for the first time. Austin is a world class city, with a population to match. You need a true dedicated aquatic space that is safe, viable for the animals and pleasant for visitors who come to be entertained, educated and enlightened. An overpriced pet store cramped into a mall setting won't cut it. The displays had some nice specimens and the ability to feed/touch is nice, but based on my previous knowledge of aquariums , fish need one gallon of water per inch of size. Most of these fish are living in overcrowded slums. The live animals are not better off. In the parrot habitat , one bird has plucked his on its feathers to the point of having bald patches. This would have been a five star review, unfortunately 2 things prevent that: #1)treatment of larger animals including birds and smaller mammals(like wallabies) is completely cruel/incompatible with these animal's basic needs(including sunlight, which doesn't exist in the strip mall they are located in. #2)pricing structure is completely dishonest. They advertise a price, and when you show up to the door they charge you an 'entry surcharge...' I am mid Gen Y, and never once encountered price dishonesty in the USA where one price is promised and you get up-charged at the door. Absolute shame! It was mostly a nice experience. The staff was very friendly and the animal caretakers were very knowledgeable and always looking out for the animals' best interests. I liked being able to see and touch different animals. There's not a huge variety, but enough to enjoy the experience. The only downside was the long wait to get assistance for entry to animal enclosures. They would announce when it was open to the public to go to these enclosures, but no one would be there. It was confusing. Maybe they were short staffed or maybe it was during peak hours, not sure. I'm thinking of going again, but not on a weekend and during the early part of the day. Barf. I've held off writing this review for a year because I honestly gag thinking about this place and the awful smell it has. I'm not an animal rights person or anything, but wow this place needs to be shut down. The animals look in such poor condition, it feels SO sad that they never see the sun and so my heart breaks. There's no possible way to keep this place clean because it's essentially cramming a ton of animals indoors. It's dingy, dirty, disgusting, smelly. I admit, the only good part were the otters, and they did look like they had a lot of fun and the only animals that felt like they were well cared for. Compared to aquariums in other cities, the "Austin Aquarium" is a disappointment. It's honestly a shame that they managed to get Austin's namesake without representing our fine city. The aquarium feels more like a roadshow attraction rather than proper aquarium. There are some cool things about the Austin aquarium like the ability to touch and feed some of the fish. You can also have an otter "experience" where they'll let you into the enclosure and the otters can play with you as you feed them. There are a few bird enclosures as well. All-in-all this is not only a "don't go" in my opinion, but going is supporting a bunch of bad practices, possibly bordering on animal cruelty. read more

Went to the aquarium for an adventure day. And the aquarium was super packed. Very popular site. The air reeked of animal feed, bird poop, and stagnant water. Air filtration is a must upgrade! Enclosures are dated and, for some of the animal inhabitants, entirely too small. But, they had sting rays, sharks, ringtail lemurs, koi fish, and even a capybara for photos and petting. The small aquarium was more diverse than I had expected and the kids really seem to enjoy themselves. The price for Austin Aquarium is inflated. However, the season pass applies to the Austin aquarium as well as the aquariums in Houston and San Antonio!! So that's a plus. read more

This aquarium treats these animal horribly!! They are inside all day long, in small cages and pet by humans constantly. If you care about animals at all, then this place is NOT for you. It would be better to see the animals in their natural habitat or something close to it so that kids could actually have an appreciation for animals and what their needs are. This place scammed my mother out of over $200. We booked a trip to the aquarium while visiting from Washington State. We purchased tickets online ahead of time, and when we got to will-call they had lost our tickets. Fortunately we had our email confirmation. The person working the desk offered my mom a a deal as a way to say sorry for their mistake and our inconvenience. She said 'I'll add an annual membership for just $50 more so you can come back and visit as many times as you would like during your visit here. My mom was visiting with several of her grandchildren and myself so this seemed like a great idea. The clerk typed away, ran my mom's credit card, and off we were. Flash forward a year later and my mother noticed a strange expensive charge on her bank statement. 'Austin Aquarium auto renewal'. She called. And called. She called 8 times and nobody would ever talk to her and just transferred her to dead ends. Finally she wrote the GM, Taryn, asking for the charge to be reversed as she did not authorize or knowingly purchase an auto renewing membership. Taryn replied saying no, you must cancel 30 days ahead of time in writing or in person. She then proceeded to tell my mother (a GRANDMA!) "I do not appreciate your adolescent behavior and maybe if you spoke to people with more kindness you would get more out of life. I hope in the future you learn to speak to people with respect and that you read the terms and conditions before signing up for something so that nobody in the future has to deal with your nasty attitude". I'm just shocked by this whole situation. Obviously this place preys on the elderly population, out of state visitors, and trusting folks who take sales associates at their word. Now we are having to go through disputing a fraudulent charge on our credit card, reporting to the BBB, etc. Just stay away from here. read more

We thought we were going to an aquarium, but really ended up in a hugely interactive zoo. This place exceeded our expectations 10 fold. Admission is fairly inexpensive and you buy coins, which start at $3 a coin, which allows you to feed the animals. We ended up getting 25 coins, 2 adults, 2 children. It took us around 2 hours to walk through and fully enjoy the whole place. Everyone was practicing social distancing and mask were required. Staff were walking around spraying and sanitizing each different space, with loads of wash stations spread throughout the facility. Almost every animal is interactive. You use a coin to get food for the fish, nurse sharks, sting rays, etc. The food cost 1 tokens, and interactive ones that allow you to truly touch the animals cost 4-8 tokens. So the lemur encounter was 4 tokens, so essentially $12 to spend a couple minutes with them. My daughters, and myself absolutely loved this cute little spot that was recommended from a young woman we ran into. I can't wait to come back. read more

This was the saddest children's activity I've been to in quite some time. We took our 12month old last weekend and it was honestly terrible. The facility is disgusting - it's run down, dirty, and the animals look like they're on their last leg. The fish tanks are overcrowded and it was so sad to watch everyone putting their grubby hands directly in the tanks to feed these poor fish with holes in their fins. I cannot fathom how this place hasn't been shut down yet. Truly terrible and a shame that we are such a large city and THIS is our aquarium. I've been to many aquariums but never one in a strip mall! However, I was not disappointed. It's much larger than it looks once you get inside and the smaller size allows you to get very up close and personal with the animals. I got so many good photos and videos. You can tell the staff really cares about its furry and feathered friends. This is one place that you can be very interactive - feed sharks, sting rays, go inside the parakeet cage, play with lemurs, etc. It's so much fun! read more

It is at worst, selling "animal encounters" but actually exploiting animals, again, not an aquarium. It is a dirty, dingy playground with a cheap "mermaid" singing Disney songs, not an aquarium. They say everything is bigger in Texas - I don't think they took the Austin Aquarium into account when that statement came about. Don't get me wrong it wasn't a bad place, but you could put the whole thing in a small corner of most major city aquariums. While traveling with a two year old it was probably the perfect size to keep him busy and not get burnt out halfway through. Some nice displays of stingrays, koi, sharks etc along with various turtles & birds but again very scaled down compared to others we've visited. My biggest complaint would be the tokens they upsell you on when buying tickets. Wanting my son to have a great experience I allowed myself to get grifted into 10 of them at about $27. Unfortunately all we wound up doing was a few feedings at one coin each. at some of the displays they had those vending machines they used to keep at the front of supermarkets with the little plastic bubbles that had a prize in them - well, these had whatever food that display was given but very little of it. And most of the 'experiences' they offer cost multiple coins and were either closed or he was too young for. We made it all the way around and I realized I still had 7 of the coins in my pocket. Wound up giving them to a mom who was on the fence with buying them as we were leaving so that one less person got ripped off by this. At the end of the day it's a cute outing for young kids but nothing that'll blow your mind. Just avoid the coin grift and you'll do ok. read more

I love a good mom and pop business, but the Austin Aquarium left so much to be desired. My #1 complaint is the quality of the water the fishes are swimming in. It's MURKY... yellow... disgusting. Employees told me that it just looks that way but I'm not buying that. Of extreme concern was the unsupervised care of small animals such as rabbits, lizards and birds. I had to step in and stop two unpleasant kids from hurting a rabbit. This shouldn't even be necessary considering that there seemed to be more staff members than guests. There was a young woman staffing the area but she was too busy talking with another employee. Then they sneakily nickle and dime you with exorbitantly-priced tokens for extra things like balloon modelling and face painting. The food experience was sad. Both of the employees I interacted with had no idea what they were doing... Want a hot dog? Wait 20 minutes. A slice of pizza? You'll have to wait until the pizza delivery guy comes. What an amazing day at the Austin Aquarium!!! First, I want to disclose that I had visited this place about six months ago. I can understand some of the previous comments about it looking unkept. That was my first impression, six months ago but, I also noticed that it wasn't the care of the animals, their habitats were always exceptionally clean or the wonderful people that work there (you can tell they REALLY LOVE WHAT THEY DO AND WHO THEY WORK FOR...the animals, of course!) , it was only due to it needing a new paint job. I thought about this and I came to the conclusion that it's probably really difficult to perform any kind of construction around animals so, it makes sense why this was put off for awhile. Holy Moly! I just went there today and it's unbelievable how great it looks now! As always, we were greeted with happy employees that go out of their way to answer any questions and facilitate a first hand experience with their animals. Emma was so sweet to help us with getting to meet and even pet their residents. She introduced us to Tati who is in charge of the penguins. After washing off our hands, cleaning our shoes and a brief tutorial about how to behave around these beautiful creatures, we were able to feed and gently pet with two fingers, four of their penguins from South Africa. It was educational and a once in a lifetime experience! Next, Ryan took us into the Brazilian porcupine habitat after the same method of hand washing and education of how a human should behave while amongst these wild animals. Phenomenal experience! I loved how both care givers were so gentle with these creatures and loved to share information about them and also very professional and protective of both the animal and the customer. This is by far the best place for not just children but adults too! I'm amazed and impressed with The Austin Aquarium from A to Z! If you're a local or visiting, you got to go to this place. Honestly, I think it's perfect if you're feeling down or a little depressed, it's better than Prozac! Never knew there was an aquarium in Austin! This place is pretty cool for the kids but most of the interactions were closed or kids younger than 6 weren't allowed to participate. We bought about 10 tokens which can be redeemed for fish food along the exhibits or the interactions. We struggled to find ways to use those tokens so would definitely recommend being a little conservative since you can always go back to the entrance and buy more. Not the best aquarium I've ever been to but it's decent enough to visit if you haven't seen anything in a while. If you are going to visit multiple times it's worth checking out the annual plan. The tokens can make your visit go from reasonable to expensive very quickly. read more

Hands down the best aquarium/zoo that I've been to. What looks like a pet shop from the outside is actually a great experience. Some of the animals wander around in the crowd like the iguanas, ducks, tortoises, and parrots. My friend and I paid extra for tokens that allowed us into the lemur's habit for a live experience where they were jumping on top of us and we can pet them in their enclosure. I had low expectations for this strip mall aquarium but it over delivered on that. I used to live close to the Aquarium but never was drawn to it. However, my 5.5 month old is so fussy at home but doesn't make a peep when we're out and about. With the weather being so freakin hot, I've been looking for indoor activities that aren't food/cafes and there really isn't a ton. So, I figured a little trip the aquarium would be fun. The place is definitely bigger than you'd expect from looking at it but smaller than you'd expect of an aquarium. I feel like the term "aquarium" is a bit of a stretch. There are lots of different animals, some of the aquatic nature. There were lots of experiences where you could go in and hand out with the animals. I couldn't go in as there was an age limit (and it wa just me and my daughter) but it seemed like a ton of fun. There were lemurs, some cool looking birds, toucans, and some other fun animal experiences I can't remember. I also remember a person dressed as a princess walking around with a live snack around her waste which I thought was fun. I wasn't 100% sure why she has to be a princess to do it but I'll roll with it. Even though my daughter is really too young to get the full experience, she got a kick out of looking at the big fish through the sides of the tanks. Do I think this is a $21/adult experience? It's easy to hate on this place I guess cause it is small and up close with the animals, but I think it's great. Been twice now, once it was super crowded and loud and intense, I can see how it's a bit much for people, and they might give a negative review. The second time it wasn't crowded, it was super clean actually, even the bathrooms were very clean, the staff was great and seemed to love the animas at all and we had an amazing time. Where else can you pet a penguin? I've owned a big koi pond and it is not easy keeping that clean, especially when it's fully stocked or overstocked, so kudos to whoever is maintaining it here, the water was crystal clear, and no algae growth. If one fat iguana has to get poked by 100,000 kids to inspire the next generation of conservationists and biologists so be it! Avoid holiday weekends, go in the morning, and you'll have a blast here with your kiddos. read more

This weekend I visited the Acquarium and was truthfully shocked and saddened by the conditions the animals are living in. The enclosures are tiny, and filled with excrement. So much so that the animals were walking through it and the entire facility smelled. Guests are encouraged to touch animals with absolutely no supervision, which is dangerous for the visitors and stressful and dangerous for the animals. It is clear that these animals have never and will never see the light of day. They need to be taken somewhere to be rehabilitated and cared for. read more

Ok I will start with the few pros: -entrance tickets are affordable -educators are free of charge -a lot of freedom with the animals: like going inside the bird's cages and touching the animals. Cons: -pretty small not only for the humans but for the animals too. -not a lot of supervision -lacks a cleaning environment. I felt the areas for the big animals like the turtles were so small. The baby kangaroos were in a very small cage. These animal are meant to roam free. But if you are going to keep them for $ and people's attractions the least you can do is have a big space for them. Now I don't know if they have a back space were the public couldn't see. I really hope that's the case but I really doubt it. One of the fish tanks were so crowded with big fishes. I felt it was way too many to have in the same tank. My girls loved it of course. I don't like zoos or sea world kind of places because I consider them to be animal cruelty. Honest review - I didn't know what to expect walking into the aquarium yesterday as this was my first visit. Upon walking into the facility you know pretty quickly that you're in an establishment for aquatic life and live animals. If you're expecting the scents and sounds of a Spa, this isn't for you. The next thing you will experience is seeing some select birds freely flying and perching around the receiving area. This was really cool. The aquarium is somewhat smaller and exhibits are closer in proximity than you'd see at an outdoor zoo and it was very busy with birthday parties and large family groups but it was not difficult to navigate at all. The stingray tank was very interesting so I'd recommend checking it out. My husband took the opportunity to get his hand cleaned by shrimp! That was wild! But the absolute best experience was getting to spend some quality time with Sid and Ryan. I suffer from severe chronic anxiety but immediately upon meeting Sid, my whole body felt calm and listening to Ryan talk so passionately and lovingly about Sid was absolutely the icing on top of an incredible experience. A few weeks ago I was passing by Austin Aquarium and saw their employees carrying a giant snake to the sidewalk (next to the highway!) where protesters were chanting. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, so I stopped and watched. The employees stayed there for at least 10 minutes. They were smiling and dancing like they were trying to taunt the protesters. All the traffic and voices must have been so distressing to the snake. I read that pythons and boa constrictors are nocturnal, so the sunlight, man-handling, vibrations and sounds could have caused the snake to bite the employees or the family that staff greeted with the snake as they were getting out of their car near the protesters. I have never seen animal caretakers show so little regard for an animal's well-being and so little understanding that wild animals are unpredictable under duress. When I got home, I googled Austin Aquarium and learned that several children and adults have been bitten, one family sued, the rabies control authority for the City of Austin and Travis County have responded to multiple different bite incidents at the Austin Aquarium, they have multiple BBB complaints and federal (USDA) citations. The City of Austin's Animal Advisory Commission passed Ordinance 3-2-10 prohibiting certain zoos and aquariums from hosting public interactions with wild animals, specifically for-profit establishments, like Austin Aquarium, that are not accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Also, over 60,000 people have signed a petition to have Austin Aquarium shut down. Also noteworthy is that the owner's husband, Ammon Covino, spent time in federal prison for crimes related to wild animals. His brother, Vince Covino, just resigned as CEO of SeaQuest following SeaQuest locations in Colorado, Georgia and Connecticut being forced to permanently shut down after numerous citations from regulatory agencies and complaints...centering around animal welfare and injuries to customers. I just wonder who's next. I hope visitors to Austin Aquarium and SeaQuest have enough savings for medical expenses and therapy. But, of course, even more than that, I hope the Covino family hand over all of their captors to rescue organizations and stop exploiting humans and non-humans once and for all. Stay safe, everyone. Update January 2020: Had a marvelous visit with 3 young grandkids. Misty at the front was exceptionally nice to us and the kids when we went in. The parakeet room was amazing too. You sit with a small cup of millet in an aviary of about 100 parakeets. They land all over you and squabble for feeding rights some time. This is the first time either of these kids ever touched a bird and they loved the experience. The attendant, Mark, is obviously a bird lover and was nice, helpful and informative. January 2018: This place is amazing. Although a bit small, and not perfectly maintained (I'm sure the staff get paid the big-bucks), the interactivity of this place sets it apart from any aquarium I've ever visited. It's not cheap, but we bought tickets online and might have saved a little. Went with 2 adults, a 15 year old, a 6 and 8 year old. The amazing thing about this place is that you can touch and feed a lot of different animals. The Manta Rays came right up to you and almost climbed out of their tank for krill. The Kois splashed us they were so eager for feeding. The 8 year old only threw the food at the small sharks, he didn't want to get too close. For myself and the 15 year old, the birds were the best. We first bought (with tokens) food for Lorikeets. These beautiful, rainbow colored birds, are about twice the size of a parakeet. The very helpful handler brought out a small cup of a nectar-like liquid that they apparently love, with a bird on each hand. When she handed us each a bird and food, others quickly landed on our arms to feed. These birds were surprisingly heavy, but relatively polite to us and each other. One stood on my shoulder and screeched in my ear. Both of us were really fascinated with this experience. I didn't even mind getting pooped on (on both knees). The handler got me paper towels to wipe it off. Then we went into the parakeet cage with my 6 year old. The parakeets were not nearly as polite as the bigger birds. Once we each had a cup of seed, they were all over us, buzzing right in front of our faces and climbing all over our arms and occasionally my head. The 6 year old couldn't take it and dropped her food immediately. I got another cup from the handler and had two hands full of birds. The 6 year old was scared but managed to stay for a while. The birds weren't bothering her, she didn't have any food for them. They would fight each other for sole possession of the cup of food. One white guy was fearless in protecting his cup. The 15 year old and I loved the feeling of having these birds all over us. At one point, a spectator called a "real birdman" when I had birds all over me. That experience was really fun. The little ones had snacks and small toys for a nice gift shop. Although the hand washing stations were often out of paper towels, the floor was wet in some areas, and the place was far from perfect. It was also really fun. The staff were very young, but exceptionally nice. Although the outing was a bit on the expensive side, it was well worth it and I'd highly recommend this for anyone, any age. read more
