NEVER GO HERE! I made an online appointment, received acknowledgement and an appointment with Benjamin. Drove over 35 minutes in the rain with an almost accident on Hwy 183 to discover when I arrived that the receptionist was asked to call me and cancel the appointment! In addition, when I asked for Benjamin, she said he had a family emergency since yesterday and wasn't there. Now, I texted him yesterday evening and received a response. If he had an emergency, wouldn't he have said so in yesterday's text? When I asked to speak to the manager, she was too busy. The next appointment is next Thursday! Meantime, my knee is incredibly painful. What a horrible experience!~ read more

This place... OMG I wish I had gone here the first time I needed physical therapy after my foot surgery, in fact had I gone for my plantar fasciitis before I had foot surgery I might not even have needed it, and now I'm having hip problems probably because of my feet. Well live and learn, this was just a painful lesson and I'm there now. I have progressed to a point where I can go to the gym on my own and also do my PT home exercises. If you want to understand your body they will explain how it works and help you to make it mechanically sound. I'm not sure what I'll do once I'm done with my program because I feel so great after we are done with a session, I enjoy my therapist's company and expertise (Roli) and will probably go in for "tune ups" every so often just to visit! Everyone from the reception desk people to the other PTs are helpful and friendly and I highly recommend this place to everyone. read more

I've had to seek PT on three different occasions in the past 5 years. (Getting old sucks!) Bruised cuboid bone, knee, and lower back issues. All three have been with AMT. This is a great team! I've had a different therapist every time (including a student therapist guided by a permanent therapist). I believe in the hands on learning approach and fully support the student therapists. What I like most is the homework they give you and the chance to practice the exercises with correcting suggestions in office during the exercise portion of the session. This means your recovery is not only on the therapist but also on you. The more you listen to them and the more you employ the techniques and exercises in your off time, the quicker you heal! Olivia, at Austin Manual Therapy Associates downtown, made recovery from a partial knee replacement so much better. She had a calm, positive approach, was always on time, approached me as an individual, and challenged me to do more. She was empathetic but still pushed me to do hard exercizes-- and to do the things I didn't particularly like to do. I've been meaning to write about my experience with the folks at Austin Manual Therapy for some time now and kept putting it off, and I finally figured out why: I'm just not sure I can come up with the words to adequately express my deep gratitude for the amazing impact their work has had on my life, not once, but twice. My first experience of profound healing at AMTA took place in late 2009 / early 2010. I had broken my shoulder in four places and my wrist in two. Surgery went well, including placement of a plate in each location, but there was still a lot of difficult rehab ahead. My surgeon sent me to AMTA, where I had the great good fortune to have James (and sometimes Ben) as my PT. Long story short, within months my wrist was fully functional again, with no loss or restrictions, and my shoulder was back to what I've always estimated as within 95% restoration of functionality before the fractures, which to me is still miraculous. I couldn't imagine anything more challenging than that ... until I found myself with TEN fractured vertebrae due to previously undiagnosed severe osteoporosis in Sept 2016. Once again, surgery was required (twice) to remediate the situation, and I knew exactly where I needed to go afterwards for PT: Austin Manual Therapy Associates. I began my PT at AMTA soon after my second surgery in early January and have continued since at twice a week. It has been a long process but well worth it and completely necessary to the restoration of my strength, mobility, and functionality. I can't do everything quite yet but I'm getting there. This time, my great good fortune has arrived in the person my PT Jacqueline Stine. Jackie is talented, knowledgeable, creative, conscientious, thorough, and smart as a boxcar full of whips! She does a wonderful job of balancing a patient, careful approach (an absolute necessity given the osteoporosis) with just enough challenge to keep me moving forward without going too far too fast. She is an excellent communicator, an exceptional listener, is great at explaining things in terms a non-medical professional like me can understand, and has wonderful patient interaction skills. And it's obvious she cares about my well-being. No ego and completely approachable. And always thinking! I trust her completely and feel like we are truly partners in this work. She's a superstar! I could not be happier. A few final words with regard to AMTA. Every staff member with whom I've ever interacted there, whether PTs or admins, has been kind, caring, considerate, and conscientious. The word that comes to mind is integrity. Integrity across the board in an environment that is warm, friendly, compassionate, and always professional. It's also been my experience that the PTs work well together and consult with both one another as well as James and Ben regularly as needed. And James is always available to chat if I have questions or find myself experiencing difficulties. I simply can't recommend Austin Manual Therapy Associates and its people more highly. Therapists are very good when I went to the downtown location which is now closed. The problem at Far West is getting a timely appt. I had one set up before the recent big freeze and understandably, they had to shut down like everything else did. My prescription is still there but now need to call my doctor and get referred somewhere else. I think they are too busy to see me and waited a couple of weeks with pain for my original appt before the bad weather. I need a group I can go to where I can get the help I need soon. read more

I've adjusted my initial review after hearing back from Austin Manual Therapy. I do really appreciate a company that takes the time to reach out to Yelp reviewers. My edited review below. Austin Manual Therapy is about as good as any other PT I've been to. Usually I have the first appointment of the day (7:00 AM), and though my appointment runs an hour, the next patient arrives at about 7:30 AM. Even though this first thirty minutes is my one-on-one time, I usually spend 10-12 on a bike while my therapist does some paperwork. He usually says to do the bike for 7 minutes, but then doesn't return until 8-17 minutes have passed. Only once did they triple-book my appointment (meaning two people at 7am, and then a 3rd at 7:30). They assure me this was an isolated case, and it's true that I've only seen it happen the one time. In their note to me (via Yelp), Austin Manual Therapy also told me that 1/2 my time is hands-on care, and the other half is guided exercise. I'm not sure what the "hands-on" means, but if it literally means the PT doing things like applying pressure to my knee, evaluating muscle movement, etc, this is more like 10-12 minutes. I just prefer an environment where I have the PTs full attention for an hour, and go less often. That way, the minority of my appointment is learning an exercise (to do at home), and the majority is the PT working on the muscle groups associated with my injury/pain. This also saves me money (fewer co-pays). read more

I was referred to Austin Manual Therapy by my orthapaedist after I had lateral meniscus repair. I've been seeing David at AMT, twice a week for the first couple of weeks, and now just once a week since I'm progressing well. I was really impressed with how David didn't concentrate just on the knee itself, but on my hip and ankle motion and how that contributes to ongoing knee problems. I have bunions, flat feet, and am slightly knock-kneed, and all of this contributes to me overpronating and effing up my knees. We worked on knee mobility and strengthening of course, but we've also worked on hip and foot arch exercises to protect me from having knee problems in the future. As others have noted, they do have overlapping appointments here (hour-long appointments, but new patients arriving each half hour), but that's never been a detriment to my therapy. David spends the first few minutes of our hour doing mobility manipulation on my knee, then we work through a few exercises. Typically he shows me an exercise and has me work on it for a few minutes while he's helping his other patient. It works quite smoothly and keeps the therapists busy. read more

I was referred to Ben Keene at Austin Manual Therapy by my orthopedic surgeon after having an MCL knee repair and meniscus scope in October 2004. Ben and James were both awesome and I really felt I had their team on my side during my recovery. The beginning of my therapy involved trying to make a full pedal rotation on the stationary bike. It took me a few weeks, but when I finally completed a full circle, the whole office was clapping for me and cheering me on. It was a wonderful experience. I arranged a gift basket for Ben when I finally "graduated" from therapy, but no gift could ever be enough for the appreciation I had for this group. I would recommend them with my highest regards. Recently hurt my shoulder. First injury I've ever had that required physical therapy. I was both intimidated by the unknown and frustrated that I wasn't able to work out at my normal intense manner. Thank goodness I went to Austin Manual Therapy! My physical therapist was Mary and she was FABULOUS!! I was just discharged and I already know I'm going to miss her. The office staff are all very friendly and laid-back. Everyone is focused on getting you better. My favorite thing was Mary's approach to what my goals were and ensuring I made them. This is an absolutely wonderful place! I've had Justin while he was completing his certification and now Leeda. I'm crazy about both of them. And am also impressed with the other therapists I've observed around me. Each treatment is different, depending on the patient's condition. The best! Unfortunately, I've had need of a lot of physical therapy, knees and shoulders, over the years. From California to New England, Texas and Thailand, mostly I've had good experiences, but at AMT, in every category, I've got to give them the highest ratings. The office staff goes out of their way to accommodate, expedite, simplify, in every way possible, and my therapist, Benjamin, exudes confidence in the way you'd expect from someone at the top of their field. My concerns over a possible re injury of a shoulder I'd had surgically repaired, were allayed by expert diagnostic manipulation and the exercises that I was given has me feeling stronger and without any trace of the frailty and soreness I came in with. I had my ACL reconstructed towards the end of last year and worked primarily with Ben Keene on my rehabilitation. Ben was absolutely awesome! He is impressively knowledgeable about orthopedic rehabilitation and is a first-rate physical therapist. I owe much of my faster-than-expected recovery to him. The overall therapy group is just as impressive. Scheduling, payment, and insurance were all very easy, owed largely to the fantastic front desk staff. The best part: when I "graduated" from physical therapy, they let me ring a bell, threw confetti for me, and gave me a shirt! I'm skeptical about any medical professionals but I really trusted and somehow enjoyed going to physical therapy here. Mary was my physical therapist and I have nothing but shining positive things to say about her and Austin Manual Therapy. The facility is clean, friendly, and professional and I never had a problem getting an appointment when I needed one. I had had back problems for something like ten years before someone acknowledged and actually helped alleviate the pain simply caused my a leg length discrepancy. They made having lumbar degenerative disease feel and sound as simple as it really is...ahem it's a fancy scary word for arthritis on a 30 year old. The point is, I feel better now and I have someone to turn to if it flares up again....if only my insurance were that friendly about it! read more

If anyone out there is struggling with knee pain, please go see Paul Pajak at Austin Manual Therapy Associates. I have been an athlete my whole life, and over the past three years I have had to limit my activity do to knee pain. I saw an orthopedic doctor three years ago, only to be told that I would always have pain due to my structure. A month ago, I decided to get a second opinion, and I am so thankful I did. After my first consultation with Paul, he was able to pin point where I could make changes to prevent the pain. He noticed that one leg was longer due to my pelvis being shifted. He then adjusted my pelvis, and gave me two exercises to work on. Before seeing Paul, I could only run about 8 mins continuously, and play soccer for about 20 mins. Last weekend, I played 90 mins of soccer without coming out of the game, and I continue to increase the length of my runs. Paul is as good as it gets! read more

I've had therapy with Mary at Austin Manual Therapy for two different problems close together in time, and it's been a great experience. I never had PT before, but I've seen it done for my parents, and I was always very impressed with how effective the treatment can be and how smart the therapists tend to be about seeing the patient's needs and limitations. So my turn comes, with a nasty and mysterious affliction of one leg and hip. Apparently I had a big honking nerve inflammation due to constrictions in one place or another. Mary did all kinds of interesting things to evaluate how the pain was triggered, which core muscles weren't strong enough to hold everything where it should have been, and some musculoskeletal misalignment and things that were kinda locked up and needed to release. I've always wondered how people figure out that they should go to the chiropractor or the massage therapist or whatever, but the beauty of this experience was that I got all of the above, in accordance with the different needs of different places in the body. Chiropractic jerks and tissue massage to get back to symmetry and loosen up the locked-up parts, and exercises to improve the core to hold things in the new alignment. Mary listened really well to my strange descriptions, and paid really close attention to the form of my exercises, to explain what was important until it penetrated my stubborn brain. Then when my leg and hip were ok again, I got my doctor to prescribe PT for my shoulder that had been rickety for years, and now it's 100% better too, in a few weeks. That's 2 for 2. The business end works smoothly here. Easy to schedule and handle billing, and appointments are on time. It's not a big noisy clinic, and there's extra help when someone needs it. My wife was frustrated that the physical therapist at another firm did not examine her or listen to her complaints as carefully as Mary has. I was scheduled for back surgery seven months ago. I was in horrible pain from a bulging disc and had tried the physical therapy group my surgeon "recommended". They made my situation worse. As a last resort, I listened to my wife, who had had treatments with Leeda at Austin Manual Therapy the previous year. (Note to self: Listen to your wife more often.) In just a few sessions with Leeda, my pain was substantially reduced, I had no need for the multiple narcotics that were ineffective anyway, and I cancelled my surgery! My timeline went like this: End of October I walked in to their office barely able to walk, on multiple drugs, not able to drive myself, and by the end of December I was snorkeling in Cancun! I cannot recommend Austin Manual Therapy highly enough. What amazed me, outside of my own recovery, was the diverse patient demographic. You see every age and type of person there. I saw Julia at AMT downtown for both a pinched nerve in my neck and rehab after knee surgery. She's very good at balancing pushing you when you need to get pushed to work hard (after knee surgery) and easing up so you don't hurt yourself. She varied my exercises during appointments so they wouldn't get boring and also gave me modifications to do at home so that I didn't get frustrated. I have not worked with Olivia, the other PT there, but she also appears to be very good at giving a variety of exercises. I have never seen either of them start an appointment late. Adrian, the admin assistant is also personable and takes care of insurance issues and answers the phone--usually on the first ring, and calls back promptly if you leave a message. I highly recommend this place to anyone getting knee replacement. read more

I'm a competitive cyclist, who recently developed a hip problem for the past month or so. I could still ride but had to deal with a constant tweak in my left hip. I just assumed it was a strained hip flexor or something along those lines. I met with Taylor at Austin Manual Therapy for about half an hour. He performed a few Range of Motion tests on both hip joints. His conclusion was a simple tight hip joint. Literally 30 minutes of "manual therapy" later I no longer feel any twinge at all. He was awesome. He also explained what each maneuver he was doing did to help the problem. Afterward he shared a few simple stretches and movements to help keep the hip lose. read more
