IMHO This year a new…read moreorganizer decided to change up the street configuration of the festival, which threw a lot of people off when we all parked in our usual spots and headed to Walnut Ave. to begin our day, only to discover that they had a lot more walking to do before hitting the festival! Oy! This senior citizen got her exercise in today! I had two things on my list to purchase; a new garden wind spinner and some Kibler Elf coffee cakes. We passed by some food vendors first to check out the prices. I don't know if this is a new thing, but I found many food vendors didn't have their food prices in full view. That doesn't work for me. If you don't advertise your pricing, I am going to walk past your booth. As expected, food prices continue to go up at these festivals. My hubby got two BBQ hot link sandwiches for $18. I chose an orange chicken combo plate w/rice and Chow mein for $20. Hubby liked his hot links. We both enjoyed the orange chicken. This plate was so hot and hefty, and I felt it was almost worth the price I paid. I found my wind spinner vendor and paid $18, which was $3 more than a few years ago, I think. My coffee cake vendor decided not to bring the large coffee cakes to sell but offered small muffin-sized versions instead. I was also hoping to find a Dipping Dots vendor this year, but I couldn't find 'em. One dude wanted $10 for one cookie. Nope. Will we return next year? Hmmmm, maybe.

Kim even taught us enough that we could correctly identify Dr. Milicent Shinn's lace collar as 'Sol' lace. This photo is at the Shinn House Museum and has always intrigued me.

I've visited most of the 21 Spanish missions in California, as well as missions in Arizona and…read moreMexico. I've even written a book about the California Missions (The California Mission Guide). In my opinion, Mission San Jose is not the most interesting or beautiful of the missions, but it's worth visiting if you're in the area and would like to leanr more about the missions and California history. I was fortunate to visit the mission for a weekend conference, so my experience there may not be the 'typical' visitor experience. The current mission church is not the original. It's a reconstruction, built in 1985. (The original adobe church was destroy by an earthquake.) However, the reconstruction follows the original layout, and employs authentic materials and building techniques, so it gives a very good idea of how the original church looked and felt. The church includes a beautiful organ. Again, it is not original, but it is based on Spanish organs form the 1800s. While visiting, I was able to hear a short concert by the mission's student orchestra, and a performance on the organ. There is a nice small museum that covers a bit of the mission history, and also includes information about the Ohlone tribe, who lived in the area before the mission was built. The Ohlone are still very active in the mission community. At the conference I attended, I met the president of the Ohlone tribe, who gave a tour of the mission grounds. The grounds include a cemetery, gardens, and olive trees. Overall, Mission San Jose is well worth a visit!

(That's one of the reasons we transferred my son to an elementary school here).. but, certain places we see a lot of homeless people here (at the Safeway plaza). It could be scary in that general area, especially at nite.
