I have had an ongoing complaint with Auto Tech for the past four years. They purported to have repaired my car to the tune of $3300.00. This was done without my approval. They have held my car illegally for the past four years and have the audacity to call this "theft" storage. They have attempted to enforce a phony mechanics lien twice during their four year fraud. I used to take my Chrysler minivan to Tom when he was at Lawrence and Ashland. Always got good service and an honest appraisal. When I bought a new Toyota Camry I started taking it to the dealer for oil changes and warranty work. Now that my car is no longer in warranty (I know that thanks to the daily phone calls I receive) I decided to find a local mechanic. A friend recommended a different place. I called for an appointment and got an uncomfortable vibe. Then I remembered about Tom moving over to partner with the guys at AutoTech - and I'm glad I did. Dropped my car off early on a weekday morning. No appointment. Tom was wrapping up with another customer - confirming that she would walk home but they would pick her up when her car work was complete. My perception of the setup is that Tom manages the appointments and customer interactions while providing guidance to the mechanics performing the services. I asked for an oil change with synthetic oil - Tom told me they would also perform an inspection- because that's what he does. I completed my form (no online reservations here) and left to get a Divvy bike for my morning commute. Within two hours I got a call from Tom that my car was ready. He explained that the inspection showed that my car battery is a little low in charge and might need to be replaced within the next six months. My radiator hoses are getting old and should be replaced in the next two to three thousand miles. He also said that my engine is solid - and could last me to possibly 300,000 miles as long as I keep up with my oil changes. How refreshing to have an honest appraisal with my oil change. The last two oil changes performed by the dealer came with recommendations for immediate repairs to prevent future problems. One of these repairs was for my axle bearings - which Tom said were fine. I'll definitely keep coming back to AutoTech. read more

Ho boy, last review was three months ago... Looks like it's Mark D to the rescue, where the D stands for "Duh!" Anyway, we were driving away from Chicagoland with smug looks on our faces, after smugly and Yelpfully reviewing restaurants in elitist ways and such when, alas, our fine motorized chariot started smoking. Now kids, smoking is bad for you. This also applies to vehicles of all ages! Ruh roh. Fortunately, we were near this place and they were kind enough to help us, even though they were busy. We had some major and minor stuff wrong with the car and they fixed what was needed: mainly, the radiator, oil pan and one of the axle boots, that same day. They do a lot of business here and it's a bigger garage than it might look from the outside, with lots of mechanics. Based upon other reviews, it seems like you'll love it hate this place, but we loved it. Many hours of hard work later, our vehicle was ready. We made it home safely to Minnesota and we haven't had any issues since. Bonus: they rotated our tires, filled the fluids and changed our wipers. Thanks so much! read more

I took my car here because it's close by and I can walk back home. They put on shocks that I brought to the shop. I ordered what I was told to get and was never told that I might need links. I was also told that I needed an alignment. A week after I pick up my car my car is making all kinds of noise. Another mechanic said that it had a terrible alignment, but they couldn't figure out what was wrong. So I take it back and they tell me that I need new links, which should always be put on when you replace the shocks. That was news to me. I got several different stories from two different people and the stories kept changing. I was told that a manager would call me and that never happened and then I was told that someone would talk to the manager about doing something for me and I never heard back from them. If anything I feel like I should be reimbursed for the alignment. I'm not happy with the no response and I will not take my car back. Once they have your money, they want nothing else to do with you. read more

AutoTech did unauthorized work on our car, which caused it to stall, then lied about what they had done to the car, and lied that the stalling problem...which they created, had been resolved. I brought in our 2010 Subaru to check the suspension and at the end of the day, Tom, their mechanic, explained the needed repairs for the suspension and the cost. He said that he had also inspected every aspect of the car, including computer diagnostics, and even used a stethescope (??) to check the wheel bearings. Really...why ? I only wanted them to check the suspension ! He then said that the car kept stalling out when multiple mechanics drove it and he'd have to clean the throttle and fuel injectors, so I couldn't pick the car up until the next day. (For 12 years, our car has run great, requiring only routine maintenance, and has never had a problem with stalling out.) Why did Tom do this unauthorized inspection, and what did he do to the car to cause a stalling problem that didn't exist when we brought it in ? He had no answer. The next day, I spoke to the manager (Carlos), who said that they didn't clean the throttle and fuel injectors because they didn't want to "lay hands on" the car, and that it was running fine with no stalling problems. So we picked it up and drove it home and it kept stalling out, and we limped back to our garage. I then called Carlos who said we can bring it back in, but I said that I didn't trust them. Can you blame me ? So, we had no car this Labor Day weekend and will have to take it to another shop (may have to have it towed) and pay to fix a problem which AutoTech created due to their unauthorized work on the car. They are the worst business I have ever encountered in all my years in Chicago. As bad as it gets. read more

I can't believe the quality of work that was provided when I my father insisted that I go to Auto Tech. The place where I was taking my truck was not rotating the tires as the manufacturer suggested when I went in for oil changes. I asked for the rotation and was told it's not necessary. After a year of that I started to have issues with my alignment and tire wear. I almost got into an accident as a result of that. Everything that Robert suggested to fix my truck was exactly what it needed. No mysterious issues or charges, just what really needed to be done. I couldn't believe they did this work in one day, plus the price for what I got was more than fair. I will not be taking my vehicle anywhere else but Auto Tech in the future. Downloaded Yelp just so I could give this review. I took my car in twice to AutoTech asking them to run diagnostics on my car and fix any issues they saw. The first time I did so, they said they fixed everything and judging by the bill I got, I assumed they got everything too. Two days later my engine started smoking and I had to take my car in again. Now I have to go to another mechanic for the same issues they claimed to have fixed. read more

Do not take your car here. Dropped off my car with a bad alternator. I got it back with strut problems it did not have before. Driving away the car bounced and shook like nothing I have ever felt in that car or any other. There was no warning given to me that this would happen. I also found two boxes of unopened car parts in my backseat. Not really confidence inspiring there. After returning the car to get the new strut problems fixed and paying even more money for this the supposedly new alternator they had installed my car died leaving me broke down in the middle of Ashland unexpectedly. My tow truck driver informed me that places like this will sell you a refurbished alternator as new. He also said he had picked up many disappointed customers from AutoTech including folks who needed a lift to a new repair facility as they were so unsatisfied with the work done. Again, do not take your car here. Save yourself some money and hassle by not getting screwed around like I did. read more

You are being foolish/mindless or have money to piss it out to this guys if you are choosing them. I usually don't write review because I had a bad experience while dealing with businesses in the city but simply couldn't let this slip by. I parked my car about 5-10 Feet away from this Autoshop with gas station the night before. next day, my car battery seemed to have died, I couldn't open the trunk, so went to ask these guys a favor to help me jump start the car, I got a Surprise, when he quoted $45 to jump start a car which is 5 feet away. Again $45, I was in a hurry and agreed to it, but what happened next made me think again about this wickedness and walk away. While his conversation happened in the front desk, the guy who talked to me walked to the other side of the shop where the cars are worked and was talking to his manager a short, bellied Hispanic, he himself was a shot hispanic with stylish beard. not realizing I walked around to meet him there as well, sort of caught him saying to his manager to the effect of "I charged him $45 dollars, he agreed, you maintain the same as well" his manager saw me and sort of wanted to validate and turn the the wickedness to honest reality, told me, yeah we always charge for jump start. Added to this, the first guy said, we also charge for towing services, into 100's. Remember people $45 for Jump starting a car which is practically inside their shop. Being in a big city, I'm used to seeing car repair shop quoting foolish price, which is acceptable in the mess of things But acting in a heartless manner is unacceptable. I finally went to o'reilly and borrowed a jump start for 30 mins "free" you just have to hand over your license and car was able to start. I can only imagine how much these guys are charging clueless people for repair. most likely other hispanic, women, elderly, and people who have no clue about repair pricing will go to this shop and pay close to $40% more. save money people. I usually take my car to peterson automotive in skokie or hernadaz auto repair down the same road in broadway, another hispanic run business but they don't steal like this. I have a FIAT 500X and my car kept over heating and they accessed my car by mid-day after I dropped it off at the location before work at 7AM and my car was fixed the next day evening by 6:30PM. After reading the skeptical reviews below, I took my car elsewhere to get an alternative diagnosis and price quote. I went to a place a friend recommended in the burbs. The diagnosis was the same (and fairly dire)--but the point is that I wasn't being cheated by AutoTech after all. The price was slightly cheaper, but it would have been a bit more inconvenient, so I let the AutoTech people do the job. So far a month later, no problems--everything works like new. Will update if it turns out otherwise! Today when I went back to follow up on something, they fixed a long-standing problem with one of my car sensors for free. They had no idea that the problem had been happening for a long time; in fact, I had no idea until they told me what had happened, and all of a sudden a lot of other things that had been happening for a couple years made more sense. The bottle of wine they left in the car on the big job was a sweet touch, and the people working there are always professional and kind. read more

I took my car here based on the reviews. The personnel were attentive but they charged me $300 and didn't fix the noise in my car. They wanted me to pay $700 for the calipers and I said no, just the lads and rotors, turns out at the end they said we were able to save the calipers... I'm like ... really? Then when it was time to leave I saw a bottle of wine that they forgot in the car so probably they went to Mariano's to buy groceries and forgot to take the wine. The bottle line is, they charged me $300 and did not fix the problem. They were nice people though. I am giving 2 stars jut because the guy was nice but I should give them 1. read more

Went in to see why my SRS light was on (there ended up being no issue) however I was told my tires were from 2017 and extremely dangerous to be driving on, they then quoted me 600$ for three 'lightly used' tires. This obviously didn't sound like a good price for 3 used tires so I got my car and took it somewhere else, this is where I learned my tires are from late 2018 and still have a good way to go before being remotely dangerous. I would just be careful these guys aren't trying to get a buck from you if they sense you don't know much about cars. read more

Don't service car with these guys. They are fraudulent and overcharge you! I had very bad experience with these guys. My car had power steering issue. They told me to replace the entire power steering hose. They estimated me $400 for the same. I asked them to go ahead for the required service. Once they done with it, they found that the issue with my car's power steering is not resolved. They called me and estimated for another repair of $400, which was ridiculous. If they don't know what is the exact issue then how they can charge for whooping amount? I had no option but to repair with them as they were giving me my car with unresolved issue. For those of you who stop reading after the first couple of paragraphs I'll warn you right up front...DO NOT get your car repaired here. This Amoco used to be associated with the one on Broadway and Irving Park Road until BP bought it out. The owner, as I recall, may have run into some legal trouble. The Irving Park station was pretty good which was what motivated me to bring my car to the Broadway and Foster location. Things have really changed in recent years. I brought my car here for three major repairs in two years. I should have learned my lesson sooner, but I didn't...my bad. First, I brought my car in for new brakes. A three day job that cost about $700. After picking up my car and leaving the station, my brakes went out...on north Broadway, one of the most dangerous driving areas on the northside. I limped my car back there driving 5mph and using my parking brake to stop. A day later, I had my car back. Next, my beloved but aging Celica started leaking oil. Though seals cost only pennies, the labor charge pushed the price to nearly $1000. Fine, I love this car. It still looks cool and I could drive it forever...as long as I stop getting it repaired here. Two weeks later I noticed oil on my garage floor. I brought it back, they looked at it and said there was no leak, the mechanic had just forgotten to clean up the engine before returning the car and the old oil was dripping. OK, it was just a few drops, but a year later I was back, another repair to the oil system. And then there was the clutch. I never believed the actual clutch was the problem. I told the manager, Eric, I thought it was the hydraulic lift beneath the clutch pedal. After looking at the car, he told me it was in deed the clutch and congratulated me on my clutch skills as I still had the original clutch after 10 years. I brought the car back three more times, every few months, because the clutch pedal kept going straight to the floor. The first two times he told me the clutch just needed to be bled. The third time, they replaced the hydraulic lift beneath the clutch pedal. Please understand, I'm not an idiot who keeps going back for more abuse (though as I write this I think maybe I am). All of these things were happening at the same time and over a period of time. I kept going back because I wasn't about to pay another mechanic to fix something I had already paid Foster/Broadway to fix. In the end, I spent a few thousand dollars here over a 2 1/2 year period to fix three problems. I still find oil on my garage floor. I won't go back. I won't ask them to honor their warranty, I won't ask them to bleed the clutch again, I will go elsewhere. This is my new mantra. I've come to believe that this place, because of its proximity to prosperous neighborhoods like Andersonville, is charging top dollar and moving as many cars in and out as it possibly can. They're not taking the time to do quality work. Do yourself a favor, find a different place to get your car serviced. I'm sure if you search Yelp! you'll find a mechanic with more favorable reviews. I've really wanted to like these guys and have taken my car here multiple times as they are only a few blocks away. Usually their service is very friendly and they seem to be quite knowledgeable. The last time I had tires mounted and balanced there, they were completely jacked up and had to have the guys at a shop near my parents in Iowa (who we trusted) redo the balance on them. But this isn't the biggest of my beefs. A few months ago I needed to have my emissions test done for the state of IL, however my engine light was on. I took it here and they ended up replacing a couple of sensors for around $850. It seemed fair for the work that they did. Fast forward to a month or two later when my car wasn't idling right and the engine light came on. I kept driving it for a little bit and knew it would need to go in soon. Then came Thanksgiving and I needed to drive to my aunt's in Wisconsin. I've had my car for seven years and trust it, so I decided to make the trip without having it checked out as it ran fine aside from the idling problem. Long story short, I broke down along the way and took it to a shop in Whitewater, WI; you know, the kind of shop with the guys that are super honest and want to do right by their customer and have integrity, all of that kind of thing. Turns out, the problem was a wire that was loose running to the cam sensor and it was rubbing up against a belt and had shorted out. My best deduction is that the guys at Autotech didn't put all of the wires back in the right harness after replacing the other sensors (as this one was right in the same area). Complete negligence and carelessness on their part. Looks like I'll be finding a new shop to go to, too bad I don't live closer to Whitewater, because I'd be going back to Mills Automotive all the time. I find it funny that whatever they F up, I can have redone by trustworthy guys in rural areas. I wish we had that kind of service and integrity in the city. read more

My wife and I woke up one morning and my wife had a flat tire on her car. We were both in a rush, but we were able to handle everything together with just my car that day. When we came home, I knew I had to fix her flat because the next morning we needed both cars. However, it was 5pm in the evening. I put on the spare tire and I had no idea where to go that late in an evening. We decided to stop in here and see if they can help. We walked in 5 minutes before they closed, but they were very friendly and fixed our tire. They also took the time to but the spare back for us. Most places would not be so friendly to help when you walk in 5 minutes before closing time. And to top things off their price for fixing the tire was not outrageous. My car would not start this past weekend. So I called my usual mechanic and he was so busy, he said it would be 5-7 days before he could even look at. So I thought I would try Mr. Auto Care - which I had read about. I called a company to tow the car in. I got a call with the estimate and authorized the repair. When the car was done, I went to Mr Auto care and they did not have my car. Come to find out, it was towed to the WRONG PLACE. So I get to Auto Tech, they went over the pricing and the repairs and explained everything to me. THEY WERE VERY NICE. I dealt with 3 people there - everyone was so nice. How do often do you get that? When I got in my car to drive away, there was bottle of champagne! And an envelope with a $20 off coupon and a scratch off lottery ticket!! How nice was that! I would highly recommenced this repair shop. Their prices seemed fair. MUCH CHEAPER than my dealer would have been. And the customer service was top notch. I LOVE great customer service. I don't need my butt kissed. Just be nice. Just be friendly. Thats all I ask. 5 STARS here. read more

I have been taking my car here on and off for the last 4 years. The last time I came in really stands out- I needed new brake pads and rotors and was armed with a list adding up to 1500.00 of work that according to Dic Ables's needed to be done. I had Robert at auto tech check everything out and surprise surprise , I only needed the brakes ;) They drove me home, and when I picked up my car, there was a bottle of Italian Sparkling wine and a thank you note left on my passengers seat.
