    Extremely old books

As a language learner, I appreciate that Autumn Leaves has a dedicated section of books in different languages. Granted, a good portion of those books are dictionaries, but it is still worth a look to see if there's something interesting (or to grab a perfectly good gently used dictionary when starting a new language!). I'm not currently learning Japanese, but there was a Where's Waldo book in Japanese, among some other cute books. They have a pretty decent selections of Spanish compared to other languages (German, for example, was all really old books). This bookstore has a great variety and is huge, so it can be hard to provide a useful review for everyone. They have some very VERY old books (kept in a special case kind of old) up to practically brand new. If you know what you're looking for, you'll probably find something great! In my opinion, the selection of books I was looking for was lacking. Used book stores can be a toss up since curation is more difficult than sourcing new. But I would definitely come again the next time I'm in Ithaca to see what's new!

Each Autumn Leaves visit, I have arrived hopeful and left disappointed. It isn't just that I've never found what I'm looking for - that's to be expected in a used book store. It's that I've never found anything I wasn't looking for either - which runs counter to the magic of a used bookstore. I've come to realize this place just doesn't have any magic. :( To be blunt, the space is cluttered with fliers and free newspapers, the lighting is dingy, and the shopkeepers don't smile. The shelves - while well-organized - are dusty. Upstairs, the cafe is cavernous and quiet, but you're greeted with a threatening sign about not bringing in any outside food. Downstairs, the record collection's low ceilings and musty basement smell discourage leisurely browsing. The whole place lacks a certain coziness. I'm grateful for the existence of used book shops, but this one really could use a facelift.

I was a bit confused where the entrance was, but once I found it I went in and saw books stacked and shelved from floor to ceiling. I have never seen such an extensive collection of quality books in my life. Apart from the eclectic nature, the books were in clear sections and alphabetical. If your having trouble finding anything or navigating, the owner happily helps and will check in on you to see if you need any help. On the more serious side, if you are a wheelchair user, getting through the isles would be simply impossible. I am a very petite person, and there was a bit of shimmying done to get through the isles. But over all I greatly enjoyed browsing, I could spend hours just looking at all the different subjects. A bit more expensive than I thought, but everyone has to make a living. Would much rather purchase my books here than at a huge corporation like Barnes and nobles. 9.8/10

I couldn't stay long because of the mold. Vlad tried to help me, leading me into a maze of stacks of towering books and boxes marked copy paper. I usually buy books at the library book sale, so I thought these prices were a little high. Cash only, forcing my husband to drive to an ATM. Not for the feint of heart.

My wife and I were checking out the Ithaca Commons and leisurely walked into this comic shop. As soon as we walked in, the owner asked if we needed help. I said I was just browsing. He then asked if I collected comics. I said I used to up until 2005 but then sorta lost interest due to the over-saturation of the semi-annual crossover events, but I still have a rough knowledge of the happenings in the current Marvel Universe. The guy then started getting really pushy by suggesting that I get back into comic collecting by picking up a trade paperback. I felt pretty uncomfortable so I just kept browsing around the store. My wife tried making small talks asking if he had any nearby restaurant suggestions. He gave an awkward answer (I'm paraphrasing here), "not really, food is food." And then resumed pestering me to buy a book. If I haven't bought a comic in the last 20 years, what makes him think that I was gonna start in his shop during a trip 3000 miles away from home? I was getting really uncomfortable at this point with the awkward silence so I picked up an issue that I had mild interest in. I imagine if we walked out empty handed he would have scolded us like he did to many other people here. 2 stars instead of 1 because he wasn't awfully rude I guess. ‍
