Made a visit to Avalon Tattoo II this past Saturday looking for a tattoo of the North Park water tower and the North Park sign on my outside calf. I met Ryan and let him know what I was looking for. He had an opening the next day and drew up a very nice piece. Wow! It came out so much better than I had originally imagined it! The lines, shading and color were done so beautifully! All four of my previous tattoos were done here, so I knew where I was going for my new one. But I didn't have a particular artist in mind. Well, let me tell you, that has now changed forever. When I want more ink, I am definitely going to schedule with Ryan. The dude gave me exactly what I wanted with no pain at all. I mean it. A few times during, my mind just wandered away and then I remembered, "oh, yeah, I'm getting new ink." Oh, and I got the ink on Sunday and I haven't felt any pain at all. I mean none. It's like I've had this tattoo forever. Granted, it is black & white and mostly just outlined, but still. I cannot tell you how happy I am with this new ink. We found out we had an older sister and she lives in San Diego. My baby sis and I are originally from Cali but moved to IL and TN. We decided we had to come out to meet and get to know our sister for her bday weekend. We decided we wanted to get matching tattoos and so she made the appts with Ali. 1st off we got there early and met Joe who opened up and Craig who entertained us (he is super funny like a Jack Black lol) then came Ali ...what a beautiful and amazing soul! Fip drew up my perfect tattoo based on five photos I sent with different components I wanted. I absolutely love it. It is exactly what I wanted and the entire process was awesome. The price was extremely reasonable. I was quoted almost eight times as much at another shop (which I will not name, since I ultimately decided that I was not going to work with them) for the same project. Fip has such a light hand that there was no bleeding at all, and it has almost completely healed just 9 days later. There are a few tiny bits of dry skin that haven't flaked off yet, but I'm patient. This is my eighth tattoo, so I know what I want and what I like and I appreciated how communicative Fip was throughout the design process as well as the actual tattoo. Honestly, the only downside is that the shop is on the second floor and as someone with really destroyed knees, I hate stairs. I did know this beforehand, and was willing to tolerate a little knee pain for the perfect tattoo. I am beyond thrilled with the end product, and will definitely be back for my next project. read more

Waited about 2.5 Months to get an appointment wit Jo Atwood. I have been tattooed at Avalon II before by Dave W. but he is not there any more. After much research we decided Jo would suit our tattoos perfectly. Both the wife and I were getting a pineapple with a hibiscus flower. One of Jo's specialties is flowers. She is good at what she does" Super friendly throughout the whole process, felt like I have known her for years. Her colors are vibrant and really pop! The shop is super clean and friendly, felt like my living room. All the artists and customers were also super friendly, lots of chatter going on. Lots of flash around the walls by Fip who owns the shop, very well know Tattoo artist! This was an all around great expierience and we will be back again when we figure the next tattoo! While unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts and then price didn't work out for our current needs we found another shop to do our matching tattoos. I am a little bummed because while talking to Mike and Jo they were very helpful to me and very professional as well. They went above and beyond what I was expecting from a tattoo artist. She helped me set up an appointment a few days later (she is booked out for a couple months, but made time for me since my tattoo is very small). She was on time for our appointment and very polite during our first meeting. She radiated a fun, professional vibe that was perfect for a tattoo artist. She took the time to pick out the perfect font for me, and didn't settle until she was sure I was happy. (even though we were in a bit of a rush, she was so kind and patient). She gave great advice on the size and placement of my tattoo based on my vision. She checked in with me several times and held a fun, light conversation with me while my tattoo was getting done. The shop was clean and well maintained. I felt very safe (especially since these are corona times!) Jo's station was tidy and professional. The shop has a very cool vibe with all the art on display on the walls. And finally, the art and tattoo itself! Jo's font and lettering is perfect. I actually got my nose pierced years earlier at Enigma right next door, so I thought it was funny that my mom and I ended up here for tattoos. This tattoo parlor was recommended to me by a friend. My sister and I walked in today (4/15/17) for an extremely spontaneous tattoo (time-wise; I've been thinking about getting this done for awhile now but never made a commitment to WHEN). Even though we were non-appointments, we felt welcomed and had no problem hanging out in the waiting room. The tattoo shop itself is located UPSTAIRS in the heart of North Park. It is bright and vivid inside; they really, really like Japanese tattoo-work based on the artwork that they have displayed. Even their bathroom has some hilarious artwork in there, LOL. Chris was our tattoo artist! I showed him our tattoo idea; he drafted a couple drawings to our liking; then he went right into inkin' us. Together, our tattoos took about 30 minutes. Chris is an awesome guy, and an awesome tattoo artist; he definitely captured how my sister and I wanted our Hayao Miyazaki trio tattoos. I am a little torn about posting one star because my last 2x there were fantastic. Fib did a St. Michael tattoo for me to which I still get compliments, 12 plus ago. I finally decided to get another one, some verbiage and costing 350.00 to 400.00 and meet Chance, early Dec. He was excited about doing the work and I left deposit, scheduled appt for Dec 28. Chance said he would send me some copies during the time leading to appt. 2 weeks later , day of appt,.after reminding him, I get a very rough, messy draft. This was the only draft I saw, naturally I canceled appt and wanted to reschedule, Chance was suppose send drafts again as he said he was almost done w one when I canceled. Told him to send that copy as it might look cleaner..He never sent "the almost finished " draft never made another appointment and after 4 more days still have not heard a word.. Finally, I moved on and told him to keep deposit. Nothing but great experiences in the past but this time Chance seemed more interested in the deposit and not the work. Moved on.... read more

There are many tattoo shops that I have been to here in SD that has a really cold intimidating vibe and atmosphere, not too sure how to explain it. This one is far from it. The first TATTOO Everyone always says that your body is a temple and has to be worshipped and not desecrated. But it's my body, I will do want to it what I want to. As I shopped around for someone to be able to create the original photo of my puppy's early year, it was hard for some to sketch and do it justice. I guess portraits are a specialty for some. Until I hit upon Avalon 2, I have read the reviews and of course I trusted them enough. However, when I first contacted one of their more popular Tattoo artist, Fip, his recommended artist was also unavailable for another 2 weeks. I was ready now so I decided to go up there and check out if anyone can do the portrait of Apricot justice. At first, since I was wanting this done sooner, Mike who talked to me when I entered the shop said he was not available until Mon this week. I wanted to get it done over the weekend and Mike asked two other tatoo artists if they can do it. Signs of a good tattoo parlor, honesty, they said they cannot do it or were not good enough to do it. So I made an appointment with Mike when he was best available. On the day of the appointment, Mike showed me the sketch first and I thought it was a great approximation but it was only a sketch, the question on my mind was how it turned out as a tattoo. I decided to put it on my chest, the area closest to my heart. Besides my partner and family, Apricot is the nearest and dearest to my heart despite his stubbornness sometimes. The tattoo only took more than an hour, Mike advised me to relax and I did. Sure for my first tattoo, I thought it would really hurt but there was highs and lows in pain but you learn to relax which was very important. After Mike completed the tattoo, I stood in front of the mirror and saw the art on my skin. It was a good approximation. I wouldn't say it was exactly the photo but it was recognizable to be my Apricot and that was the most important and the work was good. Thanks Mike, I appreciate that my first tattoo experience was original and smooth. If I save some more ducats, I will try for something bolder and bigger next time. :-) I would give them 5 stars but a tattoo is still not cheap so I fully recommend the place with the understanding, quality comes with a cost. read more

After reveiwing Alessio's work, I liked his style the most for my project. I had a half tribal sleeve, but wanted to finish the lower half is a Japanese style sleeve. We set up and appoinmtent to talk about the design, then a month later I was in. Outstanding bedside manner and really listen to my input. The work came out amazing. Way above my expectations in every way. 4 appointments and 12 hours later, it done. Thanks Alessio, I couldn't be happier. Note: These are all very busy, and much sought after artist. I walked into this tattoo shop wanting a very specific tattoo. There were other people ahead of me, although they assured me that they would be able to squeeze me in the same day. I am very happy with the results. My tattoo is based on my religion. To me it represents when God destroyed the land by water. Noah sent out a white dove and brought back an olive branch, showing him that land was near. Every time I look at my tattoo it helps to remind me to never give up hope and to never stop pushing. I just got back from the shop after my first experience at Avalon II. This is my second tattoo, the first one was about seven years ago, so I pretty much consider myself a first-timer. That, and I hate pain, so yeah. Anyway, the first time I went into the shop for my consult I met Chris Cockrill. I was pretty nervous, but he was easy to talk to, and I gave him the picture of the animal I wanted for the tattoo, and also told him what other elements I wanted, and he said he would draw it up for me. In between my consult and my appointment, I was able to text him elements of the tattoo, and also ask him questions about the process. It was nice to be able to do that. Today, when I saw the design he had drawn, I was floored, but in a good way. It was beautiful! Fearsome and girly at the same time, just like my daughter, who is the motivation behind the tattoo. :-) I needed the tattoo scaled a bit smaller than he had it, and he took the time to shrink it down to a size that I was ok with. He was easy to talk to once again, and made the two hours of tattooing go quickly. He also has an amazingly gentle touch, which was great, because my shoulder felt like it was on fire at times. He was great about answering my questions about after-care as well. All in all, a great experience. I can't wait to get the bandage off! read more
