I've been going to Aveda for 15 years and yesterday, as I was waiting for over 20 minutes for my student to come get me (watching a group of them stare at their phones), standing in the lobby with 6 other people because one bench was taken up by a person and another was being used by a makeup artist doing someone's makeup ...i seriously considered why I go there. Their products are ridiculously expensive- I refuse to pay $60 for a bottle of shampoo, they just raised their salon prices again and with the tip I add on I am paying the same amount as a regular salon and probably would have a better experience. Are they trying to be a school or customer focused business? If it's the latter, they are missing the mark. My appointment- because my student didn't get started until a half an hour after my appointment- was almost 4 hours long-for a root touch up and trim. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I'm all for supporting the students but when part of that time is them not understanding how treat a customer and prolonging a visit to ridiculous lengths it makes a customer question what is the point of going there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]Also- when you check in you're supposed to sign a waiver for the services. I have done one for each time I have had an appointment. Yesterday, a woman walked in, the girl at the desk said hey X, then sat down to make a call and said "am I checked I ? I made an appointment for a haircut with a level 1 student. The institute is really nice inside, looks quite new. The music is quite loud and runs the gamut from Green Day to smooth jazz. I wish they'd turn it down as I had to scream pretty loudly to talk to my stylist. Here are the issues I noticed that are preventing me from going back: -My stylist was really nice, but never offered me any tea, which is a signature of Aveda salons and shops. The other customers around me all had tea. I ended up asking for some and they only give you a 2-3oz cup - not the stylist's fault, just seems like they could offer a full cup. -Again, stylist was very nice, but she never offered me any of the complimentary services such as shoulder massage, scalp massage, mini facial, etc. After the lady next to me (lol my mom, we booked our haircuts at the same time) was offered all of the services by her stylist, I ended up asking mine about it while she was shampooing my hair. She gave me both a mini facial and scalp massage which were lovely, just remember that they're very brief services, less than 5 min each. -Something I loved: The shampoo room has full tables allowing you to lay down at the wash bowl, which is awesome! They even provide cushions to place under your knees for back support. -This might just be my preference but I don't want to have a conversation when I'm getting my head massaged and a mini facial. I really wanted to sit quietly and relax but my stylist started asking where I was from, etc. -Ok, here's the biggest reason I wouldn't go back to a level 1 student. I asked for a very simple haircut, the same haircut normally takes my regular stylist less than 45 min, including shampooing and a blowout. My full appointment at Aveda from first discussing what I wanted to having the instructor sign off on it to shampooing and cutting and getting multiple checks from the instructor and having the instructor to fix some spots to finally getting my hair blow dried (which had to be sprayed down with water again bc it was nearly dry by the time she finished cutting) took over 3 hours!!! I live almost an hour away so I lost half the day to a simple haircut. Highly recommend bringing a snack along, btw. -If the appointment had stated it may take that long, I wouldn't have minded. But the appt lists the haircut time slot as an hour and 45 min. -The students aren't allowed to accept tips. That's not cool. Regardless of how long it took, I really wanted to make sure my stylist got *something* so I was bummed that I couldn't tip her at least a few bucks. -Be aware that your haircut is a learning experience for the student, which I'm totally cool with and was happy to help! But the instructors come by a LOT to check on how it's going and make sure you're happy and to provide any fixes. There are some long conversations around techniques and how the student should be cutting, etc. I didn't mind at all, but I did start to reach a point where I just wanted the instructor to finish my cut so I could go home. Bottom line, if you're on a tight budget and you have a ton of free time, this is a great option for you. I have medium length hair and it was $19. I'd be open to going back and working with a level 3 stylist as they're much more experienced. But the 3+ hour time for a simple trim was CRAZY. I'd gladly try the other services if I lived closer as the prices are really great. But again, I'd stick with the more experienced stylists. read more

[[HIGHLIGHT]]My experience was my worst nightmare.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I asked for roots color, caramel highlights that would be two shades lighter than my hair color, and A 1 inch shorter version of my present layered and angled cut. After coloring my roots medium brown the male student dyed the entire top of my head neon orange blonde. He then proceeded to cut five inches off, straight around making me look like the little dutch boy on the paint can. My bangs were sky high too. I went home and threw on bottle of ash brown hair color. I thought with Aveda's reputation THIS wouldn't happen. It also cost me over a $100.00. read more

AVEDA INSTITUTE PEDICURE EXPERIENCE I was asked to choose my preferred nail color at check-in. I was disappointed in the scarce options available and chose a dark purple. I had brought a non-toxic shimmery green polish but was told they couldn't use my own. I was taken back to the spa room and met student Kaydee. While I soaked my feet in soapy water, she asked me if I wanted any add ons and met her instructor. Kaydee removed my old polish and pushed down my cuticles using an orange stick. I appreciated that scissors weren't used as less chance of injury. My nails were filed down instead of being clipped. My feet were exfoliated, immersed in soapy water again and dried off before polish application. Kaydee applied a dehydrator/primer, a base coat, and color polish. She used remover to clean up minor smudging. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I had to remind her that a massage was supposed to be included.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Overall, I was happy with the service for the price ($31) but it did take 2 hours and I was a bit uncomfortable as there were no back pillows. read more

I've struggled with finding a local salon after moving to the area last spring, but I received a fantastic cut yesterday from Sky. This is the second service I've received here in the last month, and have been so happy both times. This time I asked for a pretty big change (to cut off 3-4 inches and do some fine texturing/layering. I knew it was a big ask for a student, but she did not disappoint! And the instructor showing her the ropes took good care of her and made sure she was confident. I haven't been this happy with the $95 haircuts from my former hairdresser who is a master stylist tours for hair shows. Even though the stylists here are students, they have instructors checking on them constantly. And they are there to do any "cleanup" that is necessary. I will definitely keep coming back! read more

Came in for an all over color with foils today. I was in the chair over 5 hours and left with a wet head and two rats nests due to over processing. I have some lovely before and after pictures to share if anyone is interested. Paid 107.00 for the disaster only to go out and have it cut off after paying for it. This individual is graduating next month ....at four hours when I said I felt my hair was likely over processed I was brushed off. I was told by one hairdresser that this is a teaching institute but, the only "teacher" that came by was the individual who spent 15 minutes trying to get the rats nests out of my hair after my student hairdresser didn't know what to do. I was greeted by a warm and friendly student named Audrey she was extremely helpful and kind. She took her time deciding on what color would work best with my hair as I went there for a touchup. I am beyond amazed with my experience. I tried to schedule online- saw no appts but they texted me same day and got me in within a couple of days!! I believe my hair stylist was Emma (Emily) R. Firstly, she made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. She made me aware that most of the supervisors knew what I was aiming for and she genuinely gave me the best color experience of my life. Like, I'm not kidding! I originally scheduled all over color (aiming for a copperish/ginger color), highlights and cut, but the inspo I wanted was lighter than my original hair- so I needed to have it lightened.... which I wasn't scheduled for.. BUT they fit it in for me! I was there for quite some time (as you should expect when coming to a beauty school) but they were always checking in- asking if I needed a break or anything like that. Emma even picked up my Chick-fil-A order while my hair was processing and that is something I'll NEVER forget. beyond thankful for Emma R, all the supervisor's and even the other stylist that helped with my highlights (I have pretty thick hair). 110% will be returning. BEWARE!! TERRIBLE QUALITY RESULTS ON ETHNIC HAIR!!!!!! UNPROFESSIONAL , INCONSIDERATE, FLAKEY, DISRESPECTFUL!!! GO ELSEWHERE If your objective is to look like a scraggly Shar-Pei, then this is the place for you. I had the worst experience of my life at Aveda Institute Chapel Hill. This is a long and wild ride. The novel is warranted. I made an appointment over the phone two weeks before the date I wanted and requested a specific stylist. The stylist was confirmed. The next day, I get a confirmation text message with someone else's name on it - not the stylist I had requested. I am told that the stylist have a question is no longer available. I request another different stylist (again, I did specify by name) because of that stylist's experience with curly hair. I was told that was fine. A couple of days later, I got another text confirmation with yet someone else's name. So I looked into the person and was like, "know what? fine. She seems to know curly hair well enough." I get there for the day of my appointment, and my FOURTH stylist is not there or available. So I get assigned to the Blonde Brittney with glasses. If incompetence and ego could be combined and anthropomorphized into a single person, it would be Brittney. I come, WITH PICTURES, to my hair appointment. I had booked a balayage for long hair. I tell her my curl pattern and show her my pictures, one for placement and one for color. She assured me she could do it. Then she gets started. And she starts at the top of my head. Already I'm confused, this is a balayage. That said, this is not my profession, my first balayage, and I'm not trying to telll anyone how to do their job. She makes her way around my head and tells me it needs to sit. Well I'm confused again. She hasn't done the bottom half of my hair (pictures below). So I get tasha, ask if brittney is going to finish. Tasha doesn't know. She goes to get Brittney and they basically haul ass to beat the clock. Bleach has been sitting on my vIrgin hair for about 15 minutes, with the processed ends not eVen having been touchEd. By the time Tasha and Britttney smashed 40 vol onto my ends, they were in damage control. My roots were light, my ends were dark, my curls we're destroyed, and I was nowhere near the color I wanted. Brittney then REFUSED TO FINISH MY HAIR because I asked her how much longer my hair needed to process (after being there for 5 hours with a botched dye job). She told me she would FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO FINISH. Deedee came to tell me "our vibe wasn't there" (cos Britney has to personally like you to do her job well) was given to another stylist named Alyssa. She and Tasha attempted to tone my hair, to fix it. By the end of the day, blonde was impossible. I was told to come back today for a color correction where in wed take the blonde balayage I wanted and do a shadow root with a dark all over color. I came in today and the lady who said she'd comE in to fix my hair never showed. I waited for over 45 minutes and she never showed or responded to my text messages. BEWARE AVEDA INSTITUTE OF CHAPEL HILL. THEY ARE UNPROFESSIONAL AND INCONSIDERATE. I had to ASK for a refund AFTER THEY BOTCHED MY HAIR! After Britney got back from her impromptu dinner break, she got a manicure from another student while THREE PEOPLE tried to figure out how to fix her mess. Aveda is always my go-to for a haircut. The front desk staff, students, and instructors are all so nice! I love getting a different student each time because they're all having fun and eager to start their chosen career. The ambiance is very nice. It smells good, there is fun music playing and, once again, there's that great energy of happy and excited students. I have never once gotten a haircut that I didn't love there. The instructors watch the students very closely, when needed. The past few times I have gone I have gotten "seniors" (probably due to the time of day that I'm booking) so the instructors are a little less hands on but the students are a little more confident. Getting a senior also means that the hair wash, cut and style also takes about an hour, whereas other times when I got a newer student it could take up to 3 hours for the same services (no complaints, at all, but just keep that in mind!). They also offer a complimentary service, such as a mini massage or mini facial. I swear, I almost fell asleep in the lay-down hair wash tray as I had the warm towel on my face after the mini facial I recently had- so completely relaxing! I look forward to my haircuts, both in the quality of the cut, the general fun experience, and the budget-friendly cost! read more

The first time I had an amazing experience (probably just due to the natural talent of my stylist), but it was definitely the exception. When you come here for a balayage or color at all, I've been here from 5-6 hours. If they mess something up, be expected to be nonchalantly told you'll have to reschedule. I looked like a banana. it's extremely slow, and that wouldn't be terrible (considering it's students) except the outcomes are generally not great. The customer service is good though, they offered me to come back within 7 days for a redo, but I'm not chancing spending another whole day off there. Just gonna go somewhere else. read more

First time here, scheduled a shampoo and cut with a sophomore. Had an inch taken off, layered and opted not to have my hair blown dry since it was hot out anyway. I figured it would take a while to allow for a methodical, intentional approach, plus consultation with an instructor before and after. Loved the reclined table for shampoo, waaay more comfortable than a chair. A ridiculously low price, and a good cut/style. read more

I am a long time customer of the Aveda school, and it has mostly worked for me. First of all, it's a school, so don't expect every student to be comfortable & confident in their abilities. You can request a more advanced student. You're lucky to get one who puts a lot of thought into what they are doing. Some are already working part time in a salon & have acquired a lot of non academic knowledge. They tend to be a bit more comfortable & creative. Some clearly just go through the motions via the recipe, and it can take a while so be prepared for a long session. I even take snacks just in case. The lighting there is a horrible fluorescent so you can't see what you look like until you get home. If you find a stylist you like, don't count on them being there the next time as it seems they often "call out" and the front desk is left scrambling to find you a replacement. I don't know the background or skill level of the instructors, but like the students, some are better than others. Some are really not engaged with the process, or really analyzing your hair and what you're asking for. They don't always check your haircut closely, like check the layers please. Color theory escapes some of these people, so you are better off knowing how to ask for what you want. I have practically begged for ash highlights during past visits only for the same specific instructor to tell me that neutral would be better, so I took her advice. She is the instructor, right? Time & time again I ended up with golden yellow highlights.Then if I said something about the results, I was told what they would do "next time." I was to the point that I thought my hair wouldn't highlight that way. I really get the feeling they don't want you to ask for the free do-over. My last visit this past week I had a instructor who I had not seen before. Mrs. T? Again, I brought up my yellow highlights. This lady TOTALLY changed up my formula, and OMG my highlights look so good & flattering. I can't believe it. I don't understand why no one else would give me the highlights I wanted, and my opinion was brushed aside. Why doesn't a typical senior student have a better handle on the color theory of basic highlights? Why do I keep going back? It costs roughly 1/4 that of a salon, and I have met some really nice people. The ladies at the front desk look out for you and are really nice. I have learned better what to ask for. You can have a bad experience in a salon too. I have had fabulous cuts & so-so cuts just like at a salon. They also offer a free do-over if you're not satisfied which may or may not fit your schedule. Keep in mind it's a school and don't judge them like a high end salon. If you're adventuresome, take a chance. It won't be horrible. read more

At first I had a great experience. The girl I was assigned to could not show up so I had another one fill in and she was great (it was my first time going there so I didn't mind too much). My mother wanted to get her hair done there too and made an appointment that same day. Once she got to her appointment, they told her they ran out of power and she rescheduled (there was a power outage that weekend so it was understandable). When she came to the next appointment, it was cancelled because there weren't enough people to do her hair! She ended up going somewhere else. My sister wanted to get her hair done too. She scheduled for a haircut, and guess what? They cancelled on her and told her to reschedule. She did and when she showed up today, they told her there was no one to do her hair! I got very lucky with my appointment, but I do not see having the same experience again if I were to make another one. This Aveda continuously cancels and does not notify its' clients. If you are thinking of coming here, good luck. Because luck is the only way of possibly securing an appointment at this establishment. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Their phone system is set up where you cannot talk to a person at all; you have to leave a voicemail. After my housemate and I left over 8 voicemails total someone finally called my housemate back (I have not gotten a call back and it's been over 2 weeks) and the lady on the phone told her they don't schedule appointments in advance on Saturday and that we should walk in as soon as they open. Come Saturday we walk into an empty Aveda 10 minutes after opening and the people at the front desk tell us they are fully booked for the day because others have made appointments already. I find it hard to believe that people had gotten there before us that morning to book a whole days worth of hair appointments. What made it worse is they told us that we should have called in advance. Long story short, not sure how good their hair services are but their horrible customer service makes me not even want to bother read more
