Avenida Boa Viagem is a street in the city of Recife. It is one of the most important avenues in the capital of Pernambuco. The neighborhoods of Boa Viagem and Pina are part of it's route. It travels all along the coast at Boa Viagem beach. It starts at Avenida Herculano Bandeira and ends at the border between Recife and the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes and runs for about 8 kilometers (4.8 miles).
Before being the address of luxurious buildings with the most expensive per square meter in the city, and a street along which 38,000 vehicles pass a day, Avenida Boa Viagem was a dirt road frequented by fishermen. The history of the road as we know it today began 97 years ago, when it began to be built. The objective was to link the city to the beaches of Pina and Boa Viagem, until then isolated from urban life.
The opening of the new avenue was described in the October 21, 1924 edition of the Diario newspaper. An area of the city was being discovered and called the attention of the people of Recife. The original name of of Avenida Boa Viagem ("Good Voyage Avenue") was Avenida Beira Mar ("Water's edge Avenue"). The current name was taken from a nearby church Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem ("Our Lady of the Good Voyage"). read more
