I purchased a livingsocial deal for $22 for a medium sized dog. I knew that it was only a Deluxe Bath and the haircut was not included. However, before I purchased the deal I called and asked the owner herself (Veronica) how much it would cost for the haircut and she calculated it to be $30ish plus 10% off for new customers. So, I thought it was a good deal and from the reviews on yelp I decided to purchase the livingsocial deal. Here comes the bad part: 1.) Trying to make an appointment was horrific. They barely answer their phone and your forced to make an appointment through an answering machine in hopes that they will call you back the same or the next day. That didn't happen! It took them a week! 7 days! to call me back. I called and asked why I haven't received any reply yet and Veronica's answer was because 22 voice messages was ahead of me. It doesn't take 7 days to go through 22 voice messages. Heck I can go through it in a day! 2.) When I finally made an appointment, I arrived at Avenue Pet Salon. When I first walked in the customer service was great and then it started to die down. I don't know what Veronica's problem is but I sense a feeling of rudeness when I was there. Oh, the night before my dog's appointment I made sure he had no knots because I knew they were going to charge me extra. When I arrived to pick him put, the bill added up to $42 which I was pissed because they charged me EXTRA for supposedly mating my dog because he had knots but i knew he DIDN'T HAVE ANY!!! They also DID NOT GIVE ME THE 10% discount. $22(livingsocial) + $42 = $64. If I knew it was going to cost that much I would OF NEVER PURCHASED THE DEAL. I could of went to another groomer and would of paid the same price! 3.) When I got home, I noticed that my dog had little knots all over his body. They charged me extra for taking off his knots that I knew he didn't have and found knots forming the day he got his grooming done. WHAT THE HELL!!!! Not only did they ripped me off but they didn't even did a good job!. 4.) That same day my dog got groomed, he started to act very lazy and lethargic. I tried everything called the Vet and recalled everything he did for the past week that caused him to act this way and the solution I keep coming back to is AVENUE PET SALON. They probably did something to my dog while he was getting groomed. I also noticed that his right leg was a little weak, they probably hit his leg or twisted it while they were grooming him. Let me also add that the grooming included anal gland secretion and I knew they didn't do that because my dog was dragging his butt on the floor when we got home! 5.) I am going to the vet today, and if my suspicions are correct, I will for sure make corrective actions to this place. I am so disappointed! 6.) Although, the location may be ideal, the building their in is very small and crowded. They pride themselves in having a cage free environment, but when I explored their facility I seen at least 3 cages. Why would they have cages if they pride themselves being "CAGE FREE"? I also seen where the dogs play and it is very tiny and small. They barely have enough space to run or play. Although the owner is nice, every time I call to make an appointment she puts me on hold, never has any openings, and sounds over whelmed. But even worse, my dog HATES this place!!!! I have taken my dog here multiple times. When I leave her at the Avenue Pet Salon she is scared to stay and often shakes with her tail between her legs. My Pomeranian and yorkie came in looking like farm dogs gone wild. Veronica the owner greeted in the back door (very useful parking area) as it rained and no front parking was found. Mini (Pom) smelled great and looked like a lion after. Many groomers had declined stating Mini doesn't have enough fur for lion cut. My confidence in Veronica stays unyielding as my mini lion came out amazing. Tookie (yorkie) smelled the opposite of how he came in, shitty. I requested a snauzer cut. Again, many groomers declined. You can trade in a car but never a dog so this way I have a snauzer up untill his next grooming date. Excellent service. reasonably priced as I know my dogs loves to shit at bath time. I couldn't remember the last time I bathed my dog...it had been that long. He smelled so bad and his black coat was filthy dirty. I had always done the self serve baths but because of a painful shoulder I made the decision it was time to find a groomer. My shoulder wasn't getting better and my dog was getting dirtier. I happened to walk by the Avenue Pet Salon and poked my head in the door and I am so happy I did! After talking with Veronica and getting an estimate I called her the next day for an appointment. Veronica worked her magic and my dog's coat now feels and looks like velvet. I could tell by the way he strutted up the Avenue to our car he wanted to show off his clean coat. She understands the breed of the dog, and makes recommendations per the breed. Sheepadoodles are known for their scruffy look and Veronica patiently took the time to understand what we wanted and what would work best for the dog. She took the time to patiently remove mattings, didn't shorten or cut our pups hair because that's how we wanted it. She recommended products and tips on how to groom and we are wow'd. I really wanted to love this place, when we moved to the area in October 2011. We have a very friendly, very cooperative labradoodle who goes to Fort Funston 5x/week, so she gets pretty dirty and matted and we groom her every 3 weeks. So it's important for us to find a place that is reliable, professional and doesn't cage their client dogs. The first 1-2 visits were okay. Not great, but nothing significant to complain about. The cuts were okay. But it became painfully apparent they were over-scheduling. I couldn't figure out why they needed to keep our dog ALL DAY (7-8 hours). I am not working right now and so I don't need nor do I want my dog caged or tied up all day. The past few months, scheduling has become increasingly difficult and confusing. They hired a new front desk person who is fairly clueless about anything. She scheduled us several times and apparently wrote down the wrong thing, so they weren't prepared for us and took way longer than they were supposed to. But this past weekend was the straw that broke the camel's back. First of all, I had to jump through hoops to schedule the appointment weeks in advance. After scheduling, I received a call a couple of days later asking me to clarify which day they scheduled me for, Friday or Saturday. Not a confidence builder. And I repeated half a dozen times that we would drop our dog off at 10am and expect her done by 2pm SHARP. I find that I have to do this every time, otherwise, they try to keep her all day and drag out the grooming process. Four hours is plenty of time to complete a full groom. My husband dropped her off at 10am and at 2pm, returned to pick her up. He was told they had not started her yet. I just about hit the roof when he called to tell me. I told him to go back, pick her up, and bring her home. But when he called back, they said they had bathed her, but she wasn't cut yet. HUH? Nothing they said made sense. He went back and they were still working on her and said they needed another hour. We had a wedding to go to and did not have time. I suggested he take her as-is. They said, 'No charge. Come back Monday, and we'll clip her." My husband felt badly not paying (not sure why, because I would have gladly left without paying) and he gave them $50. When he returned with our dog Monday at the agreed-to time (they said bring her in at 9:30 and she will be done by 11am), they said they were short-staffed and running behind. My husband explained he had a job interview and I was out of town, so they suggested we leave our dog all day and they would eventually get to her. UNACCEPTABLE. The clip itself wouldn't take more than half an hour, so why they would suggest keeping her all day is ridiculous. They finally agreed to have her done by 11:30. And when my husband returned to pick her up, they charged him another $45!?!?!?!?!?!?! I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe he paid it. But he was so disgusted and angry, he just wanted it to be over. So all in all, we had to make three round trips and we ended up paying more than we normally do for a full groom. Obviously, that was our last time. But save yourself and your poor pooch the agony and venture elsewhere. I'm in the process of researching some other options. If you have any suggestions, in-box me. I should have listened to all the negative reviews. Things started out great but then went downhill pretty quickly. Scheduling an appointment was pretty easy. The lady who answered the call didn't speak great english though (this comes backt to hurt me later.) She quoted me $50-60 for a medium sized dog. Anyways, I bring in my dog at 10:30am and I called back at 4pm and it sounded like they just started on her! what the heck? When I arrive there at 5pm, they were finishing up. The front desk lady had left but there was a man there who clearly did not know how to interact with customers. He told me the cost was going to be $75. I asked him why they didn't call me before making the decision to go ahead and groom. It is very unprofessional to quote a price and then go way over. He was outright rude. Without even sounding apologetic he told me "well grooming a dog takes a lot of manual labor" ....... obviously. That's the nature of your business. That's why you give an accurate quote ahead of time. And my dog normally gets groomed for $50-60 everywhere else if not lower. $75 was way over the top. Oh, their explanation for raising the price on me was because the front-desk lady said she was an american eskimo. I told her on the phone that she was a samoyed. They look like american eskimos. It's not my fault her english sucks and wrote down the wrong information. Why am I paying for her mistake? I didn't want to argue with them anymore so I figured i'll just pay. Turns out they don't take credit cards! Only cash. Now why would a business only take cash and not let me know ahead of time. They're probably evading taxes. They did not even give me a receipt! Horribly unprofessional business. Definitely evading taxes. When we got home, but dog was super thirsty. She drank water for a continuous 5 minutes. I have never seen her so thirsty before in her life! Furthermore, like one of the other reviews stated. My dog was also super lethargic. She slept for the rest of the day and most of they next day as well. My dog is normally a super energetic, super playful dog. I have suspicions that they sedated her to make her "easier to deal with." She can be a little shy around new people. That doesn't make feeding her drugs okay! In terms of the groom, she does look pretty even. But I did have to brush her again once we got home. She still had a ton of knots left in her. I think they did cut some of her hairs though even though I specifically asked them not to. Overall, a horribly run, highly unprofessional company with lots of shady acts. Don't bring your dogs here unless you want to overpay for a mediocre groom with a special day of discomfort for your best friend. read more

Then I complained to her about how much Mika sheds and Veronica totally understood because she has 2 chihuahuas. Hair everywhere...ugh! We just moved to the Bay Area and were in the market for a new grooming place. We used to take our dog to Petsmart, but we happened to pass by this place when we were out to do some shopping and after asking the groomer some questions, made an appointment with Jessica for a touch up for our cocker spaniel poodle mix (cockapoo). The touch up took only 15 minutes (i.e. trimming her with poodle feet, grinding the nails, trimming the face and fanny) and cost us $30 (which is comparable to what we paid at Petsmart). Jessica made sure to clarify how we wanted our dog to be groomed beforehand and did exactly what we asked for. She definitely takes what she does seriously and does a great job too. A full wash, cut and groom is only $55. We only needed the touch up at that time, but in the instance that our dog needs a good cut and groom, we won't have to worry about taking her to this place. The people here really care about the well being of your pet. The only downside is that they only take cash or check, so make sure you have one or the other before you take your dog or cat for their grooming. Overall, you get quality, well-priced service; this is a place I definitely recommend. read more

I made an appointment here not too much in advance, I couldn't believe they had time for me. So I took my Morkie to the shop and left him off. He really was in need of a cut he has been having little hair blobs on the floor and these guys don't shed. A little while later Veronica called and said that Kiwi was really matted that it would take a long time to Dematte him and it would be like torture for him. She asked if I could come back so she could show me what she meant, so I went back. She asked me to show her how I brush him, so I did and she said that was the owner way of brushing and showed me the correct way. She also told me the reason why Kiwi was having his hair coming off in blobs, because the matting was pulling on his skin causing him discomfort, so he was pulling it out himself. I didn't want Kiwi to be tortured from the dematting so I decided to have him shaved instead. He came out really nice!! I thought it was really nice of Veronica to call me about the matting, it showed that she cared. The dogs do get to walk around the place even though it is small and she does have cages, but I believed they are used for dogs that can't either be around other dogs or like one dog she had, he pees on everything. Unlike other places that cage all dogs. I have been to many other places and have been to this place before, but this time I thought Veronica and her staff were there for me and listened. I have been taking my labradoodles to Veronica since they were puppies. In fact when we got a second puppy she insisted I bring the "baby" along to get use to the environment. And it certainly worked! They bounce out of the car and run to give the owner Veronica kisses. We have established a schedule to ensure that there is little of no matting. Everything she does is in behalf of the dog. Hand brushing the matts before the bath. A feet, face and fanny trim. Gently pulling the hair out of their ears to prevent infections. She even devises optimal cuts for my doodles before they go live with the breeder to have puppies and will have little grooming care for 8 weeks. What I respect most about the owner is her commitment to the animals. if my dog is too matted then I receive a text asking to keep the dog longer. This ensures that the dog is not traumatized by the event itself. I noticed that another reviewer mentioned she still had the animal after 6 pm. I've had this happen myself and it's always because Veronica has texted me hours before hand and explained that based on her initial work there are additional matted areas and she wants to gently remove them rather than taking the easy way out and taking the coat down to the skin. She then asks if this is ok before proceeding. My dogs insist on both going - even when one of them doesn't need to be groomed. They play in the long yard behind the grooming room and love socializing with the other dogs. In fact the majority of my dogs puppies all come to Veronica because they loved how their mama looked. Doodles are very smart dogs. They will avoid anyone that has caused them harm, treated them poorly or don't give them love. My doodles love being there and It's with delight that I refer clients to Veronica formover 3 years and everyone I have referred comes back to thank me. After moving to the Bay Area, I've been searching for a groomer for my Bichon, Faith. I've had one really bad experience and happened to pass by Avenue Pet Salon, looked at their website and decided to give them a try. The women are so good with the dogs, very professional and kind. I LOVE that they are not kept in kennels before or after being groomed. They simply run around in a secure area and play. Faith turned out great. For anyone on the Peninsula, I'd recommend taking your dog here! Bichon owners: If you don't want the fluffy-head look - Ask for a "Teddy Cut" Note: They do not (yet?) accept credit cards, so you need to have cash or ATM. Also there should be a 10% discount for first-timers, make sure to confirm the pricing and get someone's name so you're all on the same page. When I posted my 1 star review it ended up in the filtered section. I contacted yelp.com as my profile doesn't fit the typical protocol that would cause a review to be filtered. Further, I suggested my suspicions of all reviews being 4 to 5 stars and in an industry like pet grooming - we are fickle pet owners and there is no way that everyone is happy! No reply from yelp.com, however, my review is no longer filtered and now there are several reviews expressing concern. The most frustrating part of my experience here is no follow-up, nothing, not even after posting on yelp. I brought my yorkie here and I wasn't impressed. He took 4 hours and they didn't even call me when I was done. I just walked in to check since it had been so long. He was ready, but when they brought him out, he was completely uneven. His hair was so choppy and I hated it. They fixed the top of his head but overall, the attention to detail was definitely not there. It was $60, which is more than I would normally pay for him. So today was my birthday celebration in the city with my handsome fiancé. I entrusted my beautiful Soft Coated Wheaten with Veronica the owner at ten AM on Saturday. I had scheduled my pup on Wednesday asking her what would be the best day to comb him out and trim his already long hair. She suggested Sat. No problem since other locations were not available until well into next week. I confirmed with her the time of his pick up by six and told my regular neighborhood dog sitter to pick him up by six. She also wanted to go to dinner and called Veronica by 1030 to confirm pick up earlier than six so she could bring him to the house before dinner. My fiancé and I were thrilled everything was set and our dog was safe and grooming underway. We drove to the city parked by the baseball park and walked to Ghirardelli had a wine tasting and then walk back to pier three and had a wonderful dinner under the view of the Bay Bridge. Mind you it was 9!- 9!-9!-PM when I got a text from Veronica stating that she couldn't believe how badly matted my dog was and she needed to keep him for two more days! Never king that she had bathed Him only three weeks before! We are sitting in the restaurant and we get this text from Veronica! We dropped him off at 10 and nothing from her until 9pm at night. CRAZY LADY!!! We grabbed our check paid and texted her back that we would leave the city and be there in 30 minutes pronto. My head was spinning because I couldn't understand why she closes at six pm and she's only texting me at nine pm ??? Rushing-driving-Thinking the worst-that my dog is missing sick or dead I'm thinking additionally frightened of him cooped up in that very cramped shop with no food or water. What a mess!!! We walk in after knocking on the door for several minutes, she greets us with only his leash! Whow! It's true he's gone forever! I'm ready to break out into tears and then I see my pup. Running to me gasping in relief and confusion. He jumps on me and all I see and smell and taste is shaved hair falling and floating in the air. His entire body has been shaved except for his head. The shaved body was cut and brackish like a horror movie villain. Crazy cuts and jagged shaves up to the nape of his neck reveal an amateur groomer with little or no care for the pup or her profession. I cannot express to you or anyone how scared and disappointed all at the same time for my dog and for all human kind. This person runs a store in a very posh neighborhood on Burlingame Avenue, charging $100 for grooming and hair cut. I trusted that this woman, who states she takes grooming animals as humanely as possible- lied! LIED! Keeping a dog cooped up for over 12! 12!!!!! Hours no water no food!!! IS NOT HUMANE! She is greedy and takes advantage or people who trust her to care for their best friends. My dog came home and like other dogs in reviews also drank water for several minutes straight. I am writing a nice and sweet note about APS. Veronica's confidence was very reassuring as we were a bit nervous about our our highly intelligent, stressy dog getting her first groom (which she so incredibly needed). The timing was given by Veronica and adhered to and only cost $50 for head to toe service. Her claws were now manageable and her cut was just right, not too long and not a buzzcut... Our pooch literally was over the moon with excitement at being pampered so by professionals (there is only so much we can do in the bathtub with our 12 lb. pooch in terms of super detailed grooming at home). I would come back here again, no doubt.... Shame to read all these negative comments, but no business is perfect (Lord knows I've ripped into some other vendors that people thought were amazing). Hopefully over time, they will "perfect" their business (they are somewhat on the new side I am guessing....?). But I honestly believe they do their best, which is what they did for us! I've had to wait for my dog longer than I like... I've been on hold before when I've called with a question..... So why five stars? why do I come back? No one cuts my dogs hair better..... they fit me in no matter how busy they are, and the staff really loves dogs. I assure you this is not a fake yelp review and I've brought my dog here... (a white fluffy whoodle) here more than five times and I've always been happy with what they do, though they need more manly ribbons. he's already pushing it by being fluffy and the pink hearts on the ribbon is a little much.
