My husband and I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach for Valentine's Day and this restaurant was one of the hotel restaurant options. We dined here for Valentine's dinner and it was very good. The staff were friendly and attentive and the host was kind enough to put the lakers game on the tv for us We felt the menu was somewhat limited though but we aren't big eaters so we opted for a few shared plates. We had the lobster tostada, pan al horno with Serrano ham and the Mexican Mac and cheese which we loved. The tostada was crisp and fresh and we really enjoyed it. The pan al horno wasn't anything special but it was nice to mix and match the different items it comes with on the fresh bread. We really liked the Mac and cheese- not overly cheesy (no cheese pulls here) but great poblano flavor and it felt surprisingly light for Mac and cheese. We had the PB dessert- it was decadent and we couldn't finish it but it was good. We came back the next day for breakfast which was delicious. We sat out on the balcony and ate with the gorgeous view in the background. I had the Huevos Rancheros and my hubby had the classic Benedict. The side of bacon was probably one of the best I've ever had! Perfectly crispy and not too salty or greasy. I would come back for another breakfast here. read more

We came here for a Valentine's dinner and everything was perfect. The views overlooking the golf course and to the water, amazing. The drinks were extremely refreshing. Our server, Bruce, was extremely thorough in explaining some of the menu options which helped us decide on our meals. The final touch was the churros. Bruce told us that they were better than the ones at Disney, and they ARE. I wanted to order a second plate but it would've been over the top. My only ONLY complaint was that we never got our scallop ceviche and there was no explanation as to why. But we also weren't charged for it so it wasn't a huge deal. read more

This restaurant is very difficult not to love. It's located in the Waldorf Astoria in Dana Point. They have several restaurants in this resort hotel. This one is just a bit more casual, but definitely not on flavor or service. Our waitress Stephanie, was extremely attentive, cheerful and definitely on the ball for taking care of us Saturday night. It's summertime , so we indulged in the delicious heirloom tomato salad with burrara cheese and little lemon pearls on top. " total smack of flavor in your mouth.!" This was the quintessential salad of the summer the steak kebabs with Spanish sauce, was one of my favorites. Also, the filet mignon with perfectly cooked radishes , green beans. This restaurant has a large indoor dining area, as well as a beautiful large Terrace for dining. My recommendation would be to go as the sun is setting as there are windows throughout. There is a view of the ocean. However, it's in the distance the golf course is so lovely to look at while your dining. ( we were just talking about how enjoyable it would be to come back in the fall and sit at the bar have a glass of wine and watch a football game) it has an elegant feel, but it also has a fun and casual vibe as well. read more

Dined there yesterday with a group of 4 ladies. We first gor the calamari and it was really good. The salads were very bland, asked for extra dressing, still bland - finally asked for salt which improved it. 2 major let downs were the outdoor chairs. The cushions you sat on were filthy and stained and the wicker white chairs were dirty as well. They needed a major scrub and hose down. The carpet near the bar area was also very dirty. Very embarrassing for the Waldorf name. I called to tell the manager and he simply blew it off as being very busy with a lot of kids and spills these couple of days. The correct thing to do is close of an area and clean. He told me they will be changing some things. Unfortunately until they do, I won't be back and it's a shame as I like to take out of town guest so they can enjoy the view. Pelican Hill coliseum is much better and CLEANER read more

Where to start... we were meeting friends for an early dinner and waited at the bar for their arrival. There was one bartender and he seemed distracted and overwhelmed. My husband asked for a beer and the bartender told him that the taps had been removed, the kegs were empty, and that the beer would have to be brought from another part of the hotel. He passed. We were greeted warmly by whom I assume to be the F&B manager or associate, and told us that when the rest of our party arrived, our table "was all set up and ready to go." When our guests arrived, we were escorted to the outside dining area and the hostess asked us "where would you like to sit?" No mention of the previous conversation with the manager. We ordered cocktails and the children in our party ordered their dinner. One guest ordered a martini. After about 15 minutes, the server returned and asked if he wanted "a regular stuffed olive or a bleu cheese stuffed olive?" We were stunned. Some time later, drinks arrived. And the cherry on top of our experience, wasn't the hotel's fault, but their follow up was dreadful. I ordered a pasta dish which was swimming in marinara sauce. There was a large clump something in the middle of the plate. I came to discover it was a ball of burrata. I used my fork to move it out of the way, and it slipped off the fork and splashed back into the sauce. Needless, the splatter ended up on my blouse. The server rushed over, apologized and then... wait for it... asked what size I wear. Stunned, I managed to eek out an answer. I was already embarrassed, but this was over the top. He arrived back at our table, and grandly presented me with a blouse, most likely from the gift shop. I tried to decline, but it was becoming a scene. The food is OK, the ambiance is OK, the sunset? 100% but not enough to endure the service. read more

Food is mediocre - if you can eat elsewhere, do so. We only eat here because we don't like to leave the resort once we check in. Also, the servers seem to have a major attitude problem and also don't care for the preferences of their guests. For instance - this morning I vocalized that I wasn't a fan of eggs and after asking for "easy on the eggs", my dish still came out with an excess of egg. That made it impossible to finish my dish and when I brought it up - the server simply replied with "I'll let the chef know." I let HER know I wasn't a fan of eggs and wanted minimal egg in my dish, why didn't she let them know that? Anyways - their food is meh. The service is - meh and the only thing they have going on is the beautiful ocean views. I've also dined here for lunch and it's been the same experience with the servers and food. I hope they start to hire friendlier servers who actually like to interact with people without having an attitude problem. I also hope their food menu improves (as well as the flavor) because sadly, as much as I dislike this place - I will continue to eat here when I stay here. Made a reservation for outdoor seating for 1:15. Ambiance is perfect - amazing view of the pool, golf course and ocean from the outside patio. I liked the menu selection, they had lots of options for lunch from sandwiches & burgers, flatbreads, salads and all the sides. My family ordered the lobster salad, burger, club sandwich, truffle flatbread, parmesan fries, margarita and compari spritzer. All was good, the lobster salad was the best and I will order again. The portion sizes are BIG and the kids could have shared, but then I would have to compromise with them and I just wanted a peaceful meal. Service was slllooowww. The outside was pretty packed and our waitress was apologetic and once we ordered the food came out pretty quickly. We waited at least 20 minutes before we even got our orders taken. I tried to look on the bright side and it just meant more time to enjoy the beautiful view. After lunch, we wandered around the grounds and took in all the beauty. We will definitely be back. Had lunch here the first day we checked into the resort and then breakfast the next morning. For lunch I had the fish burger with yuca fries and my husband had calamari and then the kids had chicken tenders. For breakfast we had churro waffles with ice cream on it. I had the lobster egg dish and my husband had the chicken and waffles. As far as food goes no complaints everything was delicious and well cooked. The portion size was perfect. Now for the service, it was super slow. When we arrived for lunch, the restaurant was not even full, but there was no one to seat us. The bartender came over and said someone will be with us shortly no one ever came. Finally, my husband had to go track someone down to seat us. For breakfast it was literally the same situation. It appeared. They didn't have enough service to clean down the tables because there was so many empty tables, but we were told to wait. One seated during both our meals it took forever for someone to come take our orders and then once we placed the order even for the food to arrive, it took a very long time. The ambience was amazing. Just the ocean views so no complaints there and I think that's one of the reasons why we went back the next day to have breakfast. read more

Got a watermelon/heirloom tomato caprese salad and the only thing that was tasted good was the watermelon, couldn't eat the burrata it was so bad. Giving this place 3.5 stars. Came here for lunch with my aunt. We ordered yucca fries to start with together with lamb skewers. I got the burger and my aunt got the steak salad. Food was good but drinks was even better. My truffle fries did not come super crispy so sent it back to kitchen to get it more crispy. Service was excellent and fast. Love the the mezcal drink with some spicyness to it. Make sure to get your ticket validated so you only pay $10 instead of $30. We had breakfast here today and could choose between the buffet or à la carte. We went for the buffet. I grabbed a few slices of salmon, and didn't notice at first, but later I found a hair inside one of the rolls. I told the waiter, but she didn't even apologize. She just took the plate away like it was no big deal. I expected at least an apology, especially at a hotel like this. Overall, the experience wasn't great, both at the restaurant and the hotel. We won't be coming back. The service and food at places like the Ritz and Montage are way better. read more

Awesome experience this weekend. It was a large party, so we were in the private room, with terrific service by Yair. Supporting staff was also excellent. The Chilean Seabass is ridiculously good. And their filet mignon is so good, that even the kids' plate is serious business. Of the desserts, all was good, but the churros were a step above the rest. We don't get to get to come here often due to the distance, but it always delivers. Although my expectations are already high due to a history of excellence here at Aveo, this place never fails to meet them. Come for the view, stay for the food.
