There is a large garden you can walk through to see the plants and trees and also some glass houses that contained interesting plants such as poisonous plants, cactus, and more. Most plants were labeled. There were a number of trees and some seating that was in the shade. It was a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours.

I can just imagine what it would be like in summer. I really liked the green houses as well. Our favorite was the rainforest one. A small gift shop at the entrance/exit. We were in Southern England again. Somehow we've always missed out on this Palace. So this time…read morearound we changed that, booked some tickets online the day before and went for it. There's a massive parking lot, showing how many visitors to excpect. But once inside the visitors scatter and it doesn't really seem overly crowded. It was built between 1705 and 1722. It was originally intended to be a reward to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. But raising costs and the project becoming bigger and bigger the cancelled financial support later on. It became the home of the Churchill (later Spencer-Churchill) family for the next 300 years. The Palace was used in many movies. I remember it well from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". The Palace is really huge and there's so much to explore. We had our Bulldog with, so we took turns to see the insides. But dogs are welcome in many places outside the buildings. Really impressive architecture all around, lots of wonderful details to catch. The Center of the North facade was under construction at the time, but there were still many nice angles without obstructed views to take in. Equally impressive are the park and gardens. Many walks offer nice views of the Palace, the lakes and the grounds. Loved walking around and it really felt very quiet, no so many visitors taking the longers walks around. But very worth the time and very rewarding. Great to grab a snack as well, with these views. The entrance fee with 31£ is pretty high at first sight. But then again image how much it costs to keep this Palace and all the grounds in shape and to constantly renovate it. Given that, it's worth the money. It's really an impressive place. We enjoyed our time here.

We had looked at the website and felt it would be worth spending the day and fee. Wrong. It's waay over priced. You have to park in the fields. There was a performance getting set up so we could not get the full grand ambiance .. there were venders and stage , full seating and lighting. It was ridiculous. As a bonus, There was manure getting sprayed on the lawn.

I believe the current Earl of Verney still resides on the property which has been in their family for close to four hundred years. It is quite nice for a nose around as they have not only the period furnished house, but an organic garden selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, but a second hand bookshop and various craft store items. Also look out for the annual formula 1 hovercraft racing event staged on the flat ground and lake just down the hill from the house. This is always a fun event inn the summer. There is also some Florence Nightingale memorabilia as she was related to the family and visited from time to time.

This is a must-see if you visit Oxford. The guided tour takes you through the vestiges of the…read morecastle to view its architecture and give you an idea of its original use as a fortress. The moderate climb to the tower is worthwhile as you get a nice panoramic view of the city. As the tour transitions to the use of the castle in more recent times as a prison, there is an interesting display concerning that era highlighting criminal justice practices over the past couple of centuries. The "mug shots" of prisoners held there were fascinating and often poignant. This was particularly true for those stories of the children incarcerated for things like petty theft, acts they committed just to survive. The instruments of "correction" such as stocks were also described in detail. Notorious prisoners held at the castle prison were highlighted and their tales were intriguing. The stories of Mary Blandy and the Black Panther were especially memorable. Our guide did a fabulous job of informing us about the history and significance of the structure in a very engaging manner. The Castle Mound at the front of the grounds is also worth climbing as the views are terrific. This is definitely worth the time and price of admission if you are in Oxford.

I came on a Thursday when they open from 2pm to 6pm which is understandable considering where it is. The services they provide are books, magazine for hire. The use of their computers for an hour to book. They also have free wifi. Photocopiers and a fax machine. A single wide table for studying. Also leaflets on what to your local area and surrounding area. This library is actually a quiet one compared to some; which I like. I'll definitely return because my favourite coffee shop is not far. (Fred & Ginger).

Fiction is good, and the music library rivals the Westminster Music Library (the UK gold standard I think) but not a massive number of non-fiction books in each category. She guided us through the majestic halls and took us behind the scenes, explaining the lavish history along the way, always with a warm smile. Her enthusiasm for the library was palpable, and her extensive knowledge made the tour even more fascinating. One of the highlights was seeing the Duke Humfrey's library. Such a beautiful and historic building with crests of the University of Oxford covering the ceiling, and Kings, Queens, and Bishops along the aisles. The Radcliffe Camera and The Divinity Schools were not to miss as well. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Oxford.
