It's not a big airport, but the place is understaffed and the staff are not in a hurry at all. I guess because I'm American and from LA that I'm used to a little more speed and I want lines to go faster? It's a pretty, little airport, but it was kinda smelly. Marseille Airport is small and compact, currently undergoing renovations - so it's a bit confusing for a non local as myself. I arrived in the B gates in terminal 1) in order to get to the rental car and bus area, you have to go through a maze, up a few flights of stairs, down a ramp and walk outside. The bus area is a good 10 minute walk in the hot Provençal sun. There's no direct train to the city center, so most people take bus. The fare to Marseille city center is currently 10€. There is a ticket office where you buy your fares. If taking the bus, you'll likely be faced with people who cut in line or try to get in front of you. This was kind of annoying since queuing culture doesn't seem to exist here. But be brave and hold your ground! It's about 25 minutes by bus to city center. For those traveling on Air France, you'll likely be departing from terminal 1, B gates. However with the construction you'll have to check in A gates, then walk over to B gates in the hot sun. B gates don't have much amenities. There's no water fountain or water filling station, so if you're thirsty you'll need to buy water. There's also currently no airport lounge in B gates either (again, closed for renovation). So, my recommendation is to not come here early if you're expecting to use any airport amenity. However one of the pros, is that the tax refund process is easy here. There are two Pablo kiosks, which don't seem to have many people using. The people at the Cash desk who help with the detaxe purposes are also very friendly. The detaxe process was very easy at Marseille and it helped that nobody was using the kiosks / no line. Also another pro, is that the check in process and security process is quick, easy, and no fuss at all! From door to gate it was literally about 20 minutes tops (when flying AF). Overall, I give the airport a 3 star rating, for being quick and easy, with easy detaxe... however with a lack of amenities such as water fountain. Rent a cop security that doesn't know what to do with himself. I was too early to check in and staff pointed at some chairs to wait and then this "security" came to tell me I can't sit there. Trash everywhere. A bunch of disrespectful people coming over and just behaving like savages. You cannot imagine any of this in an American airport. read more

The transit to the MRS is as good as it gets from downtown Marseille as there are multiple public transit options ranging from train, bus, taxi, Uber, and car service. Pro Tip 1: If you are traveling in France, it is a must to download the SNCF application on your smart device. Without this app, traveling by TGV, high-speed train, regional train, bus, or by metro will be extremely difficult Pro Tip 2: When using the SNCF, it is important to filter by mode of transportation otherwise you will have a combination of options. So, how does one get from Gare Saint Charles in Marseille to the MRS airport? Here's the best and most economical way. Using the SNCF app, buy a regional train ticket from Gare Saint Charles Marseille to MRS. It should be about 12 euros total for multiple passengers. Look for the train number on the monitor when entering the Gare Saint Charles. NOTE: Your train may be going to Avignon or somewhere else so don't look at the destination. In the past, you had to verify your ticket before boarding the train, that has not been our experience on multiple trains in France in 2023. Pro Tip 3: There are spaces for your luggage, but they are not the spaces near the floor, those are dedicated spaces for bicycles. You will need to pull down the folded-up luggage rack to put your suitcases. By not following this tip, you will upset the many bicyclists who need to store their bicycles in their dedicated spots, and worse, you'll have a difficult time getting to your luggage during the short stop at the airport. The train does stop at the MRS but it's a train stop and not at the airport. You have two choices Choice 1: Go on foot with your luggage to MRS Choice 2: Wait for the shuttle bus to take you to MRS We chose choice 2. Pro Tip 4: There are no luggage spots on the bus. This bus is a regular transit bus and not a dedicated airport shuttle bus with dedicated luggage racks. Not hanging onto your luggage will cause you to slide with your luggage and run into fellow passengers. I strongly suggest straddling your luggage to keep it from sliding when the shuttle bus makes its turns. MRS is divided up into two terminals. Terminal 1 is for international flights and Terminal 2 is for domestic flights. At this point, the chaos becomes more and more apparent. MRS is poorly staffed, and no one knows what is going on and they are helpless to help. Checking in with your airline is likely to be the most pleasurable part of your experience as after it, it is completely crazy. Be prepared for a lack of placards and signs. Passengers will indiscriminately line up with no idea why they are lined up or where Next comes the security section. Be prepared for many passengers who either have never flown before or refuse to remove their metal jewelry, belts, and other accessories. For the experienced traveler, this bottleneck will be very frustrating. The immigration section is next, and it is for the most part hassle-free. You will many passengers answer their phones in this section but do not follow suit. Once past security, there are some gates to the lower left and more gates straight ahead. You will sign that point down. It does not mean that they are downstairs, but rather it means straight ahead. The first part of the terminal will be gates 1-9. Gate 1 will be separated into 1A and 1B, and you will not see gate 1. Save yourself the trouble of looking for Gate 1 or anyone to explain the gates as there is no one to ask. Some gate agents are constantly using the intercom in the terminal while other flight crews do not. Trying to figure out if it is your time to board will be confusing even when it is stated in Charlie Brown's teachers' voice Bah Bah Bah in French and in English. Our flight to Istanbul was like that. We were supposed to board at 9:35 am and the gate agents did even start boarding until 10:35 am with no explanation for the delay. This flight didn't even announce the boarding process. It was nonchalantly stated on the monitor with the flight boarding back of the plane first. Without an explanation and many passengers were either unable to read the monitor or didn't care, it caused a gigantic mass of humanity at the gate. If we would have known ahead of time that the boarding process was going to be that way, we would have spent more time in the shops or at least sat down and did some catching up on emails rather than stand in line with the mass of humanity I've visited a few small, medium, and large airports all over the world and this experience was the worst yet. If you can avoid flying in or out of Marseille, I highly recommend that you do or be prepared for the chaos that will ensue. read more

We flew out of MRS to BCN during a weekday and it was rather busy. We were in Terminal 1 and when we arrived, we first had to look at a monitor to learn which counter our flight was using the check-in passengers and take baggage. The staff handling the check-in process were definitely taking their time, even though the place was packed. The upper area of the terminal, where you wait at the gate is all under renovation construction and it's a mess; as such, the lounge isn't open. The rest of our airport adventure went well. read more

I rate this amazing airport 5 stars because I had left my expensive Calvin Klein jacket on the tsa rolling X-ray machine n was all distraught to be told that I no longer could go back to get it, I was furiously trying to get attention from an officer when another had come behind me to ask me if this was mine, I was so happy , apparently they had biometric everywhere and with cctv they could see how I look to go looking for me. It was a long walk from the gate, I was so grateful as it gets very very cold inside the airplane. Marseille airport is so clean n quiet, the immigration n border patrol was very fast I was surprised they didn't stamp exit in my passport but I think perhaps the earlier scan was sufficient. This was my second time flying out of Marseille, and I definitely see improvements from the last time five years ago or so. More shops and restaurants, less waiting. Still confusing (so many different check in areas, check in in one terminal and go through security in another?). We did a lot of walking back and forth. It was fine though, we had given ourselves ample time, and had packed a lunch, so we were all set. One area where this airport particularly excels is if you have rented a car. There is a gas station easily accessed from a roundabout upon entering the airport parking for last minute fill ups. The rental agencies are a short distance from the terminals, making it easy to drop off and head in, no shuttle required. read more

Review for RyanAir terminal only as that's all I'm familiar with.... if you don't have to do it, don't do it! There are 0 plugs before security for phone charging and 0 after security too. They do have a nice duty free store- good alcohol prices. There's only 1 food/drink option before security- super, super high prices. Only 1 food/drink option after too but more reasonable. I had a chicken Caesar baguette on my flight from there and it was very filling, decent quality, and 5.5 euro. The airport itself is about 30-45 minutes from Marseille but it's easy to get to from central station. read more

Quick in and quick out. French airports are always been good on my short trip. There are plenty of restaurant with affordable wine by the glass or bottle. Food is wonderful and not over priced. I get it - we were doofs a few years back and created "freedom fries" out of the sacred FRENCH fry - with the joyous tidings of invasion, war, conquest and possibly cheap oil on the minds of most Americans we weren't too concerned with other people's feelings (what did Cheney call you, "old Europe"?). . . OK, I get it 2.0 - you're Provence - it's the "provinces" - it's OK to be "provincial" and perhaps not as cosmopolitan as Paris (everything about De Gaulle airport screams "forgive and forget," including Francois' anti-Americanism).... but did you have to subject us to those unbearable UNNECESSARY lines? Despite arriving on Turkish Air it was clear that we were inbound from the States and as passengers began approaching the onerous duty/custom lines dontcha know they shut down ALL windows except for ONE! Not too accommodating. It also appeared that in a staggered timetable other jets arriving from America were also landing - in a short order there had to be several thousand people jammed in a hallway, up a flight a stairs and back out into the searing heat of a Mediterranean spring day while one moody employee processed all of us. The kicker? People who had paid extra for those handprint passports so they could whiz through the lines of the hoi polloi had to wait alongside us. As they angrily waived their passports and fists in the air demanding to use the expedited entry they were told bluntly "that works in Paris. . . . not here." WELL! Lastly, the taxi services at this particular airport excelled in that special aloof rudeness we all complain about the French being famous for. It took me 3 cabs to get a driver who would take me where I wanted to go. The third cab? Still dropped me off miles from my hotel. Dorothy wasn't in Kansas anymore. . . . read more

I can't say that I enjoyed my time at the airport in Marseille. I guess you rearly actually enjoy airports, but for the most part I think they're okay. Marseille airport are one of those airports that I would prefer to avoid. I would much rather take the TGV to Marseille, since that's fast, easy and comfortable. You're options for getting anything to reasonable eat or drink here are very limited. Past security there is hardly anything but seats and not-so-nice toilets. Security takes forever to get through (apparently you have to get past both the ordinary security check and the boarder police) and waiting in line for check-in is just as slow and rather tiresome. So being at the airport at least 1 1/2 hour before your flight is not a bad idea at all. But it's not all bad. The free WiFi at the airport works rather well and there is no long annoying sign-up. And then there is the bus from Gare de Saint Charles to the airport. As soon as you located the ticket office, this really couldn't be any easier. The bus is easy to find and it goes directly to the airport stopping at both terminals. read more

The main Marseille airport is here too but the next 3 terminals and it has a different name - international airport or something like that. For dropping off/picking up people you get 15 free minutes, so that's good. The check in was a pain; about 50 peoople in front of me (I counted) and only 2 people checking us in. I waited about an hour. Not good! The place is clean and today not too busy, so I have no complaints about anything other than Ryanair's checkin. read more

Airports are supposed to be the place where travelers are welcomed and supported. As frequent traveler (once a week) who has traveled the world (with platinum levels with airlines), this airport wins the award for the worse experience. At 3.30pm on 2 July 2019, the Ryan Air App was jammed and we needed help - however the girl at the information counter (Der?) supporting a few airlines shrugged her shoulders, rolled her eyes - and proceeded to charge 55 Euros for checking in... as though it was our fault for the app being down. She was offering a service for 55 Euros but she had such a bad attitude that she completely deserves to be showcased as a classic "what not to do in the service industry". She probably gets away with this because the whole team at the 3.30pm shift has the same attitude - and most travelers move on, and don't let the officials conscious of French pride and service know. Since we were traveling with the family, we were able to show the boys an awesome example of terrible service - so good came out of bad. But we do feel sorry for the travelers who travel out of Marseille. read more

The terminal 2 (mp2) have been the worst experience I've ever had with any of the maybe 40 airports I visited. This is the only airport where you can miss the flight by starting queuing when the bagage counter is opened (!) But that was for the return flight. On the inbound flight, we've been queuing 45 minutes at the passport desk. Then the bagages were stuck for 65 minutes, with no information, and not a single soul from the airport or ryanair to be seen nowhere in the over crowded arrival area. The Marseille Airport is fine, if a little unhelpful in terms of staff. Watch who's taking your luggage (as no one will check if someone walks off with your bag -- intentionally or by mistake.) Most important: DO NOT rent a car from Avis/Budget at the Marseille airport. They run some major scams and it will cost you -- and Avis/Budget worldwide will not help you afterwards. read more

I am nor really a fan of the budget side of this airport, it looks very much to be an airport of two sides, one shiny building that has the premium airlines it it and caters to the people who use it with ample seating, light and good shops, and the other side looks like an unfinished industrial factory with not enough seating especially when you get to the gates. Plus you are asked to get to the gates super early and then have to stand around for an hour or more and can't get access to toilets or anything really. So yes this place sucks. read more

Nice little country airport with connections on to loads of major cities across Europe. One downside is that it can be very warm in summer and the lines around the barriers to exit customs look like they once were used to herd cattle. I'm not even kidding! I flew from Gatwick and had to walk quite a distance to the rental car (Avis) which was in the parking lot in another terminal. The good news was that there was a steady warm breeze. The rental car process was so smooth and easy - and had a/c in the little building so it was a nice transition. When I left out of this airport a week later it was a bit tricky as there weren't really signs to let you know where to go for anything. I had my boarding pass printed and had checked in online so I went straight to the gate area. Only when I was about to board the plane did the gate agent say "where is your passport check stamp?" She let me pass without it but said next time she couldn't let that slide. I later heard horror stories about RyanAir purposely deceiving customers and not letting them board without the stamp, forcing them to buy new tickets to their destinations after they'd missed their flight because of it all! read more

Quick check-in and Security gates. Quite clean and quiet. However it's ridiculous that you can't find any water fountain.. I guess you're supposed to pay 3€ for 1/2L bottle. No way.
