I also recently found out that their website is also particularly useful with loads of 'How to do' articles detailing step by step how do tackle many DIY jobs around the home. This particular store is quite large and gets very busy over the weekend. The only real gripe I have though are the long queues that's seem to be ever present every weekend at the checkouts. No other DIY store I go into seems to have the same problem, so why does B&Q?

What I also really like is the fact that they employ people who are past their retirement age. I went to choose some paint from here to paint an outside wall and one of their elderly helpers was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the type of paint I would need and the products I would need to complete the job.

The store has late night opening hours, which is very handy for the emergency repairs and can be a quieter time to visit.

I must have spent a fortune in here over the years on different places I have lived in and have always found great value on everything. Its located on the A4 in the Slough Retail Park which also houses Comet and others and the retail park was recently bought up by the Crown Estates which is the trading arm of the Royal family. I thought they were claiming poverty?! One example of great customer service was when I needed another door that B & Q had been selling. They no longer stocked them but one of the staff rang many different stores until he located one and transferred it over. I had already costed out getting one made and it would have been £300 compared to the £45 at B & Q! This store (and probably B & Q in general) has gone way beyond DIY and sells all sorts of things, but unlike Homebase which has gone all frilly and sells everything you don't need (I couldn't even get a fuse box in Homebase recently) B & Q has retained its core product but has now gone way beyond that whilst still retaining key principles in DIY. The staff are very knowlegable as many are former Tradespersons and nothing is too much trouble. They have often ordered stuff in for me when they haven't had it. I'm sure millions of people on a budget have transformed their homes into little palaces thanks to B & Q. Well worth a visit.

Basically one bit of the shop, on one side of the road, is a hardware and plumbing supplies shop, with knowledgeable staff who can help you even if you have only a vague idea of what you need. On the other side of the road is the showroom, which they'll unlock for you to look around if you ask them,a nd which contains some real upmarket brands. Lovely Boffi baths, some great and innovative bathroom designs. It's all a bit jumbled in there but the stuff is there if you need it. Sometimes they have ex display stuff on offer for a really good price - we got our bathroom sink this way.

The only issue is that they don't do the free wood cutting service like Homebase or B&Q, which can be a pain. When Wickes first opened many years ago I remember that they were amazingly cheap. Then they started to increase their prices once they got a market share. Most of their items are own brand and I have to admit that whilst they are cheap for many things, there are still others like Wilkinsons or Screwfix who can still undercut them on pricing.

Sometimes there are also deals in the main floor display area just straight on as you come past the entrance. Also, there is an amazing deal on the basic value lamp - the kind that stands vertical and has a frosted cone shape with lightbulb at the top - less than £6 will get you this lamp, and you can even choose from black, red, or chrome finish for the base part. I was really pleased as this helped me bring light into my new room and didn't break my bank as some lamps will do. Of course there is a huge selection of lamps so you can pay more if you like, but the basic value lamp is working great for me. I also got an £20 Studio Desk lamp in black, which is cute. They have all the lightbulbs you'll need as well, including eco varieties.

The store is massive, but no bargains to be had! I'm going to sound super British now, but the carrier bags you pay for are absolutely useless. The 5p one wouldn't fit any home items in, so small; so the only option is a 15p one which is semi ok. All in all, if you have an ikea fairly close, I'd give this place a miss!

Homebase in Loudwater is easy to get to with plenty of free parking. It is a nice store with lots…read moreof homewares as well as the usual DIY tools etc. It also has a garden section with a pretty good choice. There is an especially good choice of bathrooms and accessories. The staff seem friendly enough and the odd occasion I've needed help they've been pretty good. Homebase has the added advantage of having a loyalty scheme which I don't think the other main players do. I think Homebase does tend to be slightly more expensive than other DIY stores but they also seem to have better offers so it balances out.
