In the canon of dumplings, Asian dumplings reign supreme. From Chinese xiao long bao to Japanese gyoza, Asian dumplings just win at life. It only recently came to my attention that Polish dumplings were worth a try, specifically pierogis (I need to shout out to my friend Cheryl Tiu, whose blog is always full of really good information about new and tasty things to try). As luck would have it, I found myself at the Legazpi Sunday Market, seated in close proximity to the Babci Kuchnia stall. There's a tarpaulin that says, "Have you tried a pierogi yet?" And of course, I'm always up for a challenge. Pierogis, like gyozas, are cooked on a griddle, and boiled beforehand. The texture of the dough is thick and almost bouncy to the bite, owing to the flour that they use to make it, and what I think is potato added for more starchiness. The pierogis are usually stuffed with meat and vegetables, and served with sour cream, caramelized onions and bacon bits. They also come in dessert form! Luckily, I was with my family that day, so we got to try almost all of the pierogis available - my personal favorites were the Ruskie Pierogi (which contain potatoes, onions and cheese), the original meat flavor, and the beef with sauerkraut. I went back twice, if that's any indication of how good they are. I'm glad I didn't pass up the chance to try pierogis from Babci Kuchnia, because now I know that European dumplings, specifically pierogis, are contenders for the best dumplings in the world. read more

While wandering around Legazpi Sunday Market in search of something new to eat, a tarpaulin with the words "Have you tried a pierogi yet?" (pierogi capitalized and emphasized in red) immediately caught my eye. I've only ever heard of it on an episode of Guy's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and now there's an Actual Polish Guy serving them up right here in the city? The Food Network fangirl in me was ecstatic. So what's a pierogi, you ask? A petite pocket of Polish perfection, I tell you. Babci Kuchnia (literally "Grandma's Kitchen") makes me wonder how something so foreign can taste so much like home. I ordered a half dozen of their savory potato and cheese - warm al dente pillows of thin boiled-then-lightly-seared dough packed with two of my favorite flavors from childhood, no less! As I closed my eyes in delight after taking my first bite, I could almost imagine having my own Babci making these just for me. Topped with the classic sample of bacon bits, caramelized onions, and a drizzle of sour cream, pierogi here is light yet filling all the same, leaving you completely satisfied yet constantly craving for more after your first trio (ahhh, me right now!) - old-world comfort food at its finest. read more

Eastern European Comfort food, Kilbasa and PIEROGI!
History
Established in 2015.
Introducing Polish food to the Filipino palette beginning with the humble Polish pierogi (dumpling). Boiled or fried, savory or sweet, this delectable polish staple will definitely keep you coming back for more. Pierogi are the most famous dumplings in Eastern Europe, Canada, USA and one of Poland's national dishes. We started serving Pierogi to our friends during pot luck dinners and then the rest happened by accident. Friends and friends of friends started ordering Pierogi from us so we decided that we could help our home staff make some extra income for their families. From this tiny home based operation Babci Kuchnia was born but was never considered as a serious business until March 2015 when Peter decided to give up his corporate job and share his Polish roots with the Philippines. We are proud to share our families 100 year old recipes with Asia. We are even more proud that our food is cooked the old way without MSG, GMO, preservatives, fillers or any chemicals. Smacznego
