Somehow Instagram or Facebook led me to Ellie at Nut Salon and thank heavens. She's a no-bullshit, straight-shooting retro (she has a love of the 40s & 50s) delight who has, now several times, given me a cut that is manageable and has my hair in the best condition it's ever been in. She "gets" my waves and curls and somehow wrangles them into submission. Plus she's great with colour. And the best bit? I'm walking out of the salon without having to sell my imaginary first born child. (Seriously: a cut, colour and blow dry with Ellie costs me less than $180 and for me, that's value).

As a blonde with foils, I struggle to find somebody who can get the colour just right and do foils so well, but Leigh kicks over any others I have had touch my hair before. My sister now goes here too and loves Ellie. And we used them all for both of our weddings and everybody commented on our hair. I reccomend this place until the cows come home. I'd never tried it, and I can tell you waxing your eyebrows doesn't even come close. Apparently when you wax you still often leave the root of the hair in the skin so the regrowth is quicker. Threading is also heaps more precise than waxing, I've never had eyebrows like this. They also do the full range of beauty treatments at very reasonable prices (including super cheap waxing), and Rani is amazing at fitting you in for last minute appointments. I don't think I'll ever go to another salon when I've got Kelvin Grove Hair and Beauty.

She uses threading on my face and eyebrows, and I don't even have to pluck between monthly sessions. Her threading technique is incredibly precise, and as a person with fairly thick eyebrow hair, the precision is invaluable. Rani is friendly, and has become a really good friend over the years I've been coming to her for waxing. I can trust her, and that's not really something you always find at a beauty salon. She's always more than willing to reshuffle her schedule to fit in an emergency appointment, and even when she's really busy she manages to me through in perfect time. If Rani ever left Kelvin Grove I would be sure to follow her wherever she went. She's that good.

He was super kind, and professional. I was charged $40 due to it being a Sunday. He said that because he was trying something different on me, if I didn't like it and wanted it a bit shorter, I could come back within 48 hours and get it cut again at no extra charge. I thought was a great policy, I didn't think I would need to use it but my sister wanted my hair shorter for the Summer so I went back the next day after work and saw another man called Gio. Gio did an awesome job, shaved my sides down and got it a lot shorter like my sister wanted, it looked awesome as well as the first haircut. Gio did 10/10 job on the second haircut, attention to detail was perfect. Even put some wax in my hair and a hot towel for my face. Definitely coming back here.

From the outside, there is not much to be seen apart from some simple (and clever!) signage on the windows, however stepping inside, you'll find a very comfortable area that I believe was put together by Ben himself! Comfortable hairdressing chairs to sit in, and for those of you having a wash, Ben's wash basin is super comfortable too, supporting your head well and keeping pressure off your neck, which can be uncomfortable. Ben is super friendly, and very knowledgeable in all things hair related. You can show him photos of what you'd like, or explain it to him, and he will read your hair "qualities" and tell you if he thinks it would look good on you. I've had two completely differently styled haircuts from him, both excellent!

The owner-operator Lyndall is a fantastic stylist and has the magic ability to always cut my hair in such a way that it is quick and easy to deal with in the mornings AND continues to look great as it grows out (she knows I won't bother styling it, so she doesn't "fluff" with products, she just colours and cuts it expertly - the years of experience show in her work). Add to that the ability to have the lovely Lyndall's full attention (no annoying apprentice chatting away inanely in the background or hairdressers having indecently personal conversations over your head and completely and rudely ignoring you etc), and those extra little touches like a coffee while I wait, and this is by far my favourite place to be when getting a hair cut... Hair cuts used to be a stressful experience for me, now they are so relaxing I have to warn Lyndall I might fall asleep :) Would do it every week if I could...

But at Aria, which I found out about through a friend's recommendation, I decided to give it a shot. This Japanese hair salon is in the CBD and keeps their clients happy and their hairdressers relatively busy. I've now been there twice: each visit with a different hairdresser and have come out a happy camper. The second time around, I knew I could just pick up one of the magazines and point at it and let the stylist know what I was looking for. Taka, who is a manager stylist and unfortunately has moved up to Brisbane, takes great care when snipping away. You're definitely safer off with a manager stylist, which is worth the extra cost as the prices there are rather wallet-friendly. Customer service there is fantastic! It probably has a lot to do with the (Japanese) culture but from the point of entering ("Konichiwa!!") until when they see you off at the door, they're there mindfully doing their job well. Also, they've got promos like "happy hour" where it's 20% off M-F before noon and others that are released through their newsletters, as well as others like friend referrals. I highly recommend Aria salon if you're looking to get a good haircut, at great value, and fabulous service!

These guys specialise in blow drys and special occasion up-dos, and with special note to the striking flamingo wallpaper background, you'll leave feeling a million dollars. Booking online makes it a super easy process, and there's no pretense. It was mid-morning on a Tuesday, they were somewhat busy, so I booked to return that afternoon. My stylist, the salon manager, was running late when I arrived, which is something I loathe. So, after waiting around 20 minutes we finally met, had my hair cut, which was okay, and was out in probably about the same time I had waited. My wife was then looking for another place to try, so I recommended this salon to her. She arrived on time, but then had to wait over an hour - I would have left - before she had her hair cut. Then, just today, I arrived for another appointment at 12 noon, only to find my stylist running some 20 minutes late; so, went for a coffee, came back when she told me, and was still involved with other customers and no end in sight. Which is the straw that broke this camel's back. This salon is far from the only game in town, and if you can't manage the time and flow of your customers, then you're going to lose business and be bad-mouthed. It also seems that male customers take a back seat here, as women getting foils and colours are a lot more lucrative, and time consuming, than men popping in for a simple and much cheaper cut. A pity, really.
