The gravy was hot, which is a plus. Food was good. However, our plates were brought out one at time. The child's plate arrived first. The other five people waited patiently for their food. Really fun ambiance, almost feels like a stage at a play. There are walls painted as if you are in the middle of a town hall. I thought it was cute that the cashier area was painted as the town bank. Everyone is very kind and friendly. At first I had trouble finding the front door of the restaurant, so the server tried waving me down because I had passed it. The service is attentive and area is very spacious and clean. I ordered the chicken fried steak and the server warned me that it is very big. Best warning ever. I ended up taking my leftovers for lunch the next day. For my sides, I got the mash potatoes (very tasty) and the mac n cheese (eh, I wouldn't get it again). I'd like to try other things on the menu. The biscuit is toasty and buttery and overall it was a hearty meal. My two friends ordered the dinner special which was meat loaf. I made the mistake of eating at the hotel (Hilton Garden Inn) on a recent business trip to Midland. I figured that there had to be somewhere better and I found it. In fact, I had breakfast there every single day after. Anything less than a five star rating for this place would not do. I absolutely love and adore mom and pop type places. Some of the best food comes out of hidden hole in the wall joints like this one. This place was a bit tricky to find on my first day. It is part of a strip center but you do have to go through some neighborhoods to get there first. It's worth the drive and effort. It doesn't look like much from the outside but when you go in, they have done the decor up to look like it is an old town. All staff were observing Covid 19 precautions. There is ample parking to be had. The staff were very friendly. I did not have to wait to be seated. Food was always delivered quickly and at the perfect temperature. I highly recommend their coffee as it was delicious. I also would recommend the Back In The Day Special. I ordered my eggs scrambled, bacon, hash browns, and pancakes. All of this was only $8.99 at the time of this review and was well worth it. I found it to be an excellent value and very filling. They also serve through lunch and dinner but unfortunately, I never made it back for those meal times. I'll have to make a better effort the next time business takes me Midland. This place is not very big so can get quite crowded at lunch. The hours are also not ideal. If you don't work close by and hard to make it out here. They had a special on the blackened cat fish that looked really good, but I got the steak fingers. They were probably the best I've had in town. read more

Ate here for the first time this morning and I promise it won't be the last. Atmosphere: Walk thru the door and lighting is great, not dark, was meet immediately and seated. Very kind professional waitresses. The cafe was probably about 1/3 full, it has a very laid back family feeling. Hosting: Waitresses are kind, courteous and very friendly. Ordered drink and within 2 minutes they were delivered. Coffee never got low or cold. Ordered food when drinks were delivered and in 8 minutes received everything perfect as ordered. Cleannesses: This is important to me, and they receive a gold metal here. I looked for food scraps on floor, corners, under tables, nothing, impressed. Quantity and Quality of food: the portions were average but very tasty. Eggs were cooked perfect, over well, and pancakes were still hot enough to melt butter. I've eaten in hundreds of restaurants and cafés, by far the pancakes tops them all. The flavor and texture got a 10+. Conclusion: This is now my go to breakfast in Midland. I'll be doing lunch tomorrow and I'm sure it won't be disappointing. Hats off to the workers and owners at Back in the day cafe. Looks like a change in ownership and pricing to go with it. Food was good but small portions for the price. Service about par for Midland, texas. I saw several people taking back food not done well. New cooks to go with the new owners need to get it together. Charges for every side condiment and 3% for using credit. Sounds like a great formula for closing down by this time next year. I ordered the hand-breaded steak fingers for lunch with fries and mac & cheese. These can only be called steak fingers if you're talking about Paul Bunyan's fingers...my word! I was served 3 HUGE steak fingers...each about 6-8" long and about 1.5-2" wide. They were delicious as were the sides and dinner roll. My only complaints were the crinkle fries were a big soft (not as crispy as I like) and $2.99 for sweet tea is ridiculous. I've grown accustomed to exorbitant prices for tea and soft drinks in the big chains and nicer restaurants but don't expect this type of unjustifiably high cost at a Mom & Pop. While they do serve up their drinks in a 32 oz. glass, a 1000% markup is just abusive. Thus, an otherwise 5 star rating is reduced to 4 stars. My parents and I waited over an hour after we were told that breakfast ends at 10a. So we ordered lunch at 10:15a and at 11:26a, after everyone else in the restaurant had been served their food who came after us (some of them having BREAKFAST), I went to ask for our food. They said lunch doesn't start until 11 (while it's still 26 minutes later) and the cook raised their voice with my parents and got upset causing a scene. We will not be back. Great fried cheese app. I was disappointed that the mashed potatoes tasted very instant & the biscuit was flavorless & tasted like it had been under a heat lamp all day. The chicken fried steak was great. The meatloaf was pretty bland. The bread pudding was a lot of bread & not much else, ice cream would've made it a lot better. The banana pudding tasted instant, had no bananas in it & the nilla wafers were just for decoration I think, just a small dollop of cool whip, so disappointed with desserts. I looked at their Facebook menu before going & the prices were more expensive than what was listed. I just don't think I'd go back again for the price. They really need to make them a bigger to serve to adults. They also forgot to add the hash browns to the chicken fried steak plate. The order was about $42 and for that price there wasn't much food. We went to Back in the Day on a Saturday. The parking area was crowded, so we were worried we would have to wait. To our surprise many tables were leaving at the time. Only Breakfast is served on Saturdays. I ordered my eggs over medium and this is the only restaurant in Midland that can served eggs this way. We are locals having tried both breakfast & lunch items. As noted on a previous post. Most all food is frozen. Chicken fry, catfish, vegs etc. food has no flavor due to being prepared this way. Disappointed but coffee is good, eggs but biscuits & sausage are frozen, hash browns are the square frozen kind but opt for the diced potatoes which have some flavor. Waitresses are ok but some what unfriendly. Is it better than Cracker Barrel's well it's smaller but for now food is better at the Cracker. It is so cute inside. It has a church with stain glass windows, a stage, a house with a front door and family inside. The food is delicious. Started with a salad with blue cheese crumbles and ranch. The chicken fried steak was excellent and really huge. Gravy was the bomb flaky warm biscuits homemade mash potatoes.. my only complaint I was to full for desert. The hashbrowns in fact we're the shape of the ones you get at McDonald's and just as greasy. Loved it! The decor is unique. The walls are lined with store fronts. The wait staff are friendly and fast. The food is delicious. We had the chicken fried steak. It was huge. This was my first time trying this restaurant. I ordered a meatloaf plate with corn and mashed potatoes and we had a homemade potato chip appetizer. The potato chips were fried just right and not greasy all and I really liked them. The meatloaf was good but not spectacular. The side dish portions were pretty small and were not served family style at lunch. The mashed potatoes were OK, again not exceptional and had a little bit of cream gravy. The price was kind of expensive for what you got. Back In The Day Cafe was the best place that I have eaten at in Midland. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs and it was the honestly the best chicken fried steak and eggs I have had. We went on Saturday expecting the wait to be long but got seated almost immediately. Our waitress Maggie was so sweet and kind. She refilled our drinks almost immediately as they were empty and was very quick about everything. The scenery in the cafe is amazing, so much art on the walls.
