Compared to other hostels (many, complete shitholes), the room conditions we had at Backpackers were more like small apartments. Shared co-ed living spaces with a living room, TV with cable, and a kitchen with a full-sized refrigerator, with separate male and female bunks off the main quarters. Clean enough, no AC in our particular room which was difficult during the summer night, but all in all a friendly, camp-like feel especially in the communal spaces.
I was able to see and experience Nomads over the weekend and really enjoyed their rooftop area, but I will say that Backpackers offers the same community-feel in their main picnic space, offering cheap buffet BBQ dinners with close ties to Cheeky Monkey's to continue the festivities. (Great for backpackers looking to save a buck.)
And the staff at Backpackers was beautiful. I met the owner and was drawn to his friendliness and overall demeanor. His youthful staff exhibit the same kind of outgoing personalities and level of professionalism that made our stay at Backpackers enjoyable. While I didn't like having to lend a few dollars to "rent" silverware and plates for my meal, I can appreciate that that's just the way it is here in Byron.
