I absolutely love this place, mainly because of the consistently kind staff and good beer. I've been twice and they always have a variety. Seem to rotate some things. I've liked every single beer I've had. Some more interesting selections have included the Lemon Basil, Orange Rosemary Amber, and a Citra beer! I've also enjoyed the Backroom blonde, Mr. Pat's Abby, and a couple of other IPAs/Pale Ales. This place's beer is always great. I also enjoy the laid back atmosphere. Grill Cheese rocked 5+ stars and the amazing pesto and crostini' slack enough positive adjectives. Real beer cheese!!!! Coke slaw with fresh dill light and refreshing... Skip the sliders -skips Chips and Salsa and Baked Beans! Would love to have been able to compliment but as a helper I count on honesty so maybe these will improve! Let's talk beer- all good! It's a brewery, no wait it's a farm, no wait it's a farm to table restaurant, no wait it's the cutest and friendliest little place ever...... Fine. It is all of them. Driving cross country and used Yelp to find this gem. JUST. THE. BEST. I have been to a ton of breweries (if someone at Yelp ever reads this will you slide in the DMs and tell me how far I am back from most breweries reviewed ever???) and this is the most unique one I have been to I think? Small menu, but I had a delectable pulled pork sammy. Best coleslaw I think I have ever had? Bartender said the secret was fresh dill from the herb farm on site. You can buy fresh and live herbs as well at Backroom. COOL. They grow hops. People are wandering around doing farm shit. It is a cool place. You should go. Backroom is one of my favorite breweries in Virginia. The setting is beautiful - rolling hills all around - the beers are tasty, and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. The last time we stopped in, there was some kind of fair going on, so the place was much busier than usual. However, everyone at the Brewery, from fellow patrons to bartenders, were super friendly, and as Backroom doesn't list flavor profiles for its beers (the menu is handwritten on a chalkboard), so it was nice to talk it out with the patient and knowledgeable staff. I usually opt for two 3oz selections since I'm a huge lightweight, but Backroom only sells taster set (four for $20) or 12oz glasses ($6 each). I got the cilantro lime beer on the recommendation of the bartender and enjoyed it so much, I ended up getting a second beer, the black truffle pig. I don't really understand the name of the black truffle pig but did enjoy it - it was a hoppy, slightly bitter beer with a deep malty taste. Other beers we really enjoyed included the oatmeal stout and the golden strong (which tastes like if dessert was a beer). Backroom is one of the few breweries I've been to in Virginia that actually has its own kitchen. Turns out the food is pretty good! I wasn't originally planning to get anything, but after a friend came back to the table with a pulled pork sandwich ($9.99), I just had to try it. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the roll was soft yet substantial enough to hold up to the grease and juices of the pork. I also tried a bite of pretzel, which was just okay for me - it's supposedly served with a beer cheese, but the dip tasted more like melted salted butter. We ended up spending a lot more time out here than we thought we would - it was just such a lovely atmosphere. Unfortunately, rain was threatening to roll in during our time there, so we didn't get to enjoy the bucolic outdoors as much as we could have liked. The taster included all 8 of their beers on tap, about 2 oz each. Wide variety of beer styles, one for any taste. Our favorite was the fresh hopped (!) black IPA. They grow their own hops. We got the pulled pork with baked beans and baked red potato. It was great, the bun deserves a special call out. It was more croissant-like and, oh, so good. I got the portabella flatbread. It was very fresh. One of the other menu items stated they make their own mozzerella, It appeared that the flatbread had it too. They have cheese making kits inside just in case their dishes motivate you to give it a try at home. If the beer and food doesn't convince you to go, then the atmosphere is worth the trip. We stopped here after spotting the sign while driving back to Baltimore from Luray, and so glad we did! The location is lovely, being on a small herb farm in a rural setting. There is plenty of outdoor seating in a lovely garden, plus a dog-friendly pavilion and an indoor bar very reminiscent of an English pub. The bartender was excellent, giving us lots of information on the beer offerings plus a few jokes thrown in. We did a couple of beer flights at $20 for four 4oz servings, cleverly served in sturdy tray with cut-outs for stability. All the beers were delicious, with several highlighting herbs from the farm. There was also some great-sounding food on offer that we didn't try - to ease the process while sat outside, our bartender offered to send a text when orders were ready. We stumbled upon Backroom Brewery while riding the motorcycle one day and we are so glad we did! This place is very cool and unique. They grow their own herbs and hops for their beer and they have great beer! My favorite was the Cilantro Lime, but the other light beers were good too. I didn't try the darker beers, as I'm not a big fan of those. They have a very limited menu, but do offer some kind of food each day. The guy working the counter was vey polite and the atmosphere was great. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather with our beer. They also have flowers and stuff for sale so be sure to check that out, too. read more

The brewer really knows how to make the range of beers, which is definitely NOT an easy thing to do. The beer is top 10% of breweries I've visited. My husband and I went for a drive from Culpeper Va to Winchester VA. Along the way we decided to Google breweries on our way. The Google pictures, reviews and website looked great. But... when we got there.. there was a private party happening in the building that nicely shown on Google and their website.. only to be directed to a run down building which they call the taproom. Trees were over grown through the walk way, you had to duck down. Walk in thr taproom.. and it just didn't feel welcoming.. the bartender seemed as if he was bothered. Being new to the place, I like recommendations and advice. Nope, not for him. When asking for a description of the beers he threw me the post card of the descriptions as if he was too good to explain them. Or ask me what I usually like & make a recommendation. The place seemed dirty to me.. and as soon as I went to the bathroom, I was correct. It was awful. The toilet looked as if it had urine already in it so, I flushed it before using. Nope, it was just thay dirty and stained. The beer was okay, but not great by anymeans. I got the flight of 4 and I wouldn't have ordered them again. We drank and than left. I'm an animal lover so, it didn't bother be but there are cats running everywhere. We counted at least 6 while we were there. If you're not a cat person, beware. I had the strangest experience today, Labor Day. My boyfriend and I planned to meet our friends at the brewery. We don't live close to each other, so we found this cool looking brewery that is an hour from each couple. My friend called ahead to make sure that they were open on Labor Day, and it was confirmed that they would be open. We are arrived at 11 and the only person on site was someone tending to the herb gardens. She was pleasant enough, and told us she would love to serve us beer but she was not allowed to do so because of licensing. We told her not to worry and that we would just wait for a little bit until the worker(s) arrived. We sat outside for a little while, then because it was getting hot, we wandered inside the bar area. picked out our table, looked over the menu in anticipation of someone arriving so that we could sample the interesting looking beer. Nobody showed up! We stuck around almost 40 minutes past opening time, and then left. Highly disappointing because we drove all this way after choosing backroom brewery as our destination. The good news is that we made a new plan and drove quite a ways but ended up enjoying our afternoon at bear chase brewing co. Thanks for wasting our time brb! read more

Beautiful surrounding area but unfortunately it's a very unpleasant environment. Went there before Covid and was hoping that maybe they were just having a bad day then. Went back yesterday but I was wrong. This is just how it is. Dirty, run down. The man working the taps wasn't rude but certainly wasn't friendly. Beer is fine, there are a few tables wedged in between the "tap room" and whatever the gross building is that's next to it. The upholstered bar stools are stained, plywood walls, very dirty. A little out of the way, but worth visiting for their beers! They infuse herbs that they grow on their herb garden with their beers and it's SO delicious. Every time my husband and I go to the grocery store to get beer, I always think about their beers and wish more stores carried them! On our visit, my husband and I chilled in the lawn area and played cornhole for half an hour. Two downsides to this place are the staff and price. Their beers are more expensive than most of the other breweries in that area. Staff didn't make us feel welcomed especially when we asked the guy to tell us more about their beers. read more

Looking for a place to park our van for the night. BRB is a Harvest Host which is a bonus, but just found out about this 7-year old brewery. We love it! Billie, the owner, is a gracious owner that runs a fun space that feels great. Chris, the bartender, is a welcoming, warm, friendly knowledgeable person. Excited to have another place to come to. Oh oh oh, and the beer - the DIPA and the flagship brew a the lemon basil were reasons to come back again! They're doing a great job with social distancing their customers! read more

We stayed here on 5/13 as a stopover on our trip, through Harvest Host. The location provided plenty of scenic views and parking for our Rig. The hosts were fantastic, and of course the beer was wonderful as well. We tried the Bopd IPA and the Oatmeal Stout. Both beers exceeded our expectations. We look forward to returning when everything is fully open and able to fully enjoy the bar and many more samples! read more

Local nano farm brewery out in rural Winchester on a picturesque piece of land that utilizes all fresh ingredients that you can explore just by walking from the parking lot to the bar space. Love! I wish I could have spoken to the brewer about these awesomely unique beers but I just didn't get a chance. I tried the tasting flight of their 8 on drafts brews and they were all solid. My favorites were the golden Belgian and one that they used basil in (forgot the name), though all of them are easily drinkable with something that will be enjoyed by even the most discernible individuals. The atmosphere is this quiet laid back country home with bar seating and a few double occupancy tables scattered in strategic places, I think there is even an upstairs too with a balcony that overlooks the bar. Only recommendation is air conditioning during the summer. :p The grounds are a breathe of fresh air, quite literally, with hops in full bloom across from an expansive covered herb garden and what looked like a mini nursery with flowers and shrubberies for sale. It feels like going to grandmas house. :) I can't wait to go back. read more

EH, WHATEVER**** Down a dirt road onto somebody's farm. Drove past some mannequins, one headless, with a potted plant in place of the head. Walked by probably half a dozen farm cats hanging out. A weird bar with government warnings printed on 8.5x11 sheets of paper pinned by doors, lit by a few lamps and a single hanging ceiling fan light. Empty, except for a few locals. A surly little bald bartender sucking on his dentures, and giving you a dirty look as you decide on your beer. Really weird, man. The turkey reuben was delicious, though. And baked beans as a side? Awesome. That said, the beer was just okay. The lemon basil wheat was initially impressive, but it lost its charm about halfway through. I tried both the oatmeal stout and the red IPA. The stout was just a standard, scratchy small-brewer attempt- if you've been to a local brewer, you know what it tastes like. I remember drinking the red IPA, but I don't remember what it tasted like (after one beer, the lemon basil), so there you have it. Also, if you're like me, and you like to collect growlers from local brewers, be aware that the growlers here are egregiously over-priced. If you're willing to pay 50 dollars for a growler and a fill, than no worries. I went out of my way to find this place, and I wanted a growler, and I was shocked by how expensive it was. Fair warning!! Supposedly medal-winning, but I wouldn't go back. It's worth a visit, just for the weirdness, but I've definitely had much better beer in much friendlier places. The food was fabulous, the beer was forgettable, the atmosphere was unsettling, and the price of a filled growler was absolutely shocking. I stand by what I said: this is a weird place that is worth a visit, but only if you want to feel grateful that you made it out, and you are willing to pay almost $100 dollars for a meal for 2 adults (and a growler that isn't that impressive.) Really disappointing experience. We got to the brewery around when it opened, and there was a building labeled "taproom" and a larger event area. Went to the taproom and the bartender grunted at us in greeting. No niceties. We started to order and when my husband asked me what I'd like to eat, the bartender said, exasperated (though we were clearly the first customers of the day, "Not doing food today. Have a wedding of 250 people to cater." We decided to leave before trying anything. Not remotely a welcoming atmosphere, and the bartender seemed not to want to be there. read more

The "Why Bother Brewery?" Incredibly underwhelming and disappointing. They don't give off any welcoming or helpful vibe, rather like they are annoyed there are customers. No signage, so we wandered around for 10 minutes before "annoying" someone in the larger building in the front (how dare we assume this was the place of business) and being directed to a small unsigned shack near the back of the property. The counter service employee was grumpy and surly, clearly ticked off we had questions about brews. We had out of town guests and had hoped to introduce them to a local "craft" brewery, support local business. Inside seating was sparse. We were embarrassed for this establishment. It's hard to even imagine on a nice day with a group of drunken friends knocking them back this place holds any appeal. The brewery's "signature" effort to include herbs to the brews fails miserably, nothing we tasted was remotely good. Drive a few miles in any other direction (as fast as you can) for a far less excruciating experience. A Miller light would have been better. read more

This place is special. I don't say that about many places. I picked up a friend from Blandy and we were on a quest for The Beer. Backroom seemed like a place to chase The Beer. We didn't know what to expect, but we were in for a very pleasant surprise. Backroom is a relatively new brewing operation on a preexisting herb farm. It's a small operation with some really big beers. We had a nice chat with one of the brewers, and then walked in to check out the taproom. Before placing an order we went out to survey the patio and got invited to harvest cascade hops while listening to live bluegrass music. We happily obliged. Several hours were blissfully spent in a great environment, immersed in good conversation, drinking great local beer, plucking hops off vines, and listening to live music. Not a bad way to while away an afternoon. Not bad at all. read more

The beers and setting deserve 5 stars. Staff one star and food 2-3 stars. Great selection of beers and all that we tried over three visits in the past few months were tasty. The setting is dog and kid friendly with lovely vistas, cornhole , and room to spread out and relax. A perfect stop on your return from camping or other outdoor adventures. It's probably best to eat before you go. Food has been hit and miss. Flatbed is decent. Pulled pork was inedible at last visit, but folks at the next table said it was good this time. Other items are passable if you're hungry and/or you want to keep drinking beer. Service is awkward and slow. You feel a little bit like you're in the way just for showing up. read more

Stumbled upon this wonderful spot after a trip itinerary change. So happy we did! Cool, exquisite, country feel with friendly staff and jovial patrons. This is a nice brewery with a at home feel. All of the beers were interesting and represent what Craft Beer is supposed to be. The food menu is interesting cooking with their beer and definitely tasting. The location is not far from 81 or Skyline Drive and should be on your list for a stop. read more

Really awesome place close to Shenandoah. The set up is great with a lot of picnic tables and was pretty easy to find a good place to relax. The food was great and teh beer was very good, I had the Double IPA (highly recommend!) And my husband had the citrus beer. The bartender was super friendly and gave us tastes of several beers to help us decide. Definitely a place I'll be coming back to whenever I'm out near Shenandoah. read more

This place is a joke. We got different information with each phone call (three in total). They told us they could take a reservation for a large party; someone told us later that they could not. They told us we could order food until 8; the next person told us the kitchen closed at 7:30. They also would not let us order food over the phone even though we were worried we wouldn't make it in time before the kitchen closed. No one knew what was going on, and no one cared about our business. Go elsewhere. read more
