Closed because of COVID-19, the Darress Theater is planning a reopening in the not too distant…read morefuture. They have been cancelling performances by a number of tribute bands and magic shows up to this point. It is a historic (1919) burlesque venue. Today the theater features much of it's vintage look having retained many of it's classic elements, albeit worn. Pre-Covid-19 the theater hosted comedy acts, live concerts and some plays. Additionally they screen international small budget and silent feature productions. Seating available includes: rear mezzanine, front mezzanine and orchestra. The theater hosts a lot of tribute bands for such artists as the Cars, John Mellencamp, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Depending on which direction the coronavirus takes, Separate Ways. a tribute band for the rock group "Journey" will play September 19, 2020. I am personally looking forward to hearing the music of "Journey" Tickets are usually $25 dollars to hear the tribute bands play.

Friends of mine know I'm a big Beatles fan and a couple years ago they bought us tickets to see Beatlemania here at Darress Theatre. The show was absolutely great. And we all had a wonderful time...including the kids all getting autographs from the 'Beatles'. This historic little theater used to be a vaudeville theater and has been around since 1919. The place is really cute, but you aren't going to get full-fledged concerts here. What you will get are a lot of small shows, movies (especially old movies-check out a screening of the original King Kong in April 2013), comediens, local talent, and a great place to have fundraisers. I really love this little place and I hope they keep it going for a long time. Yeah, it isn't a real modern theater and it could use some reservations, but it has class and personality...

The bathrooms are spacious and clean, and I can't emphasize enough how important that is. My suggestion, particularly for sold-out shows, is to arrive early, like an hour and a half before doors, and park your car at the VFW across the street and pop in for a few three-dollar beers. The prices at Starland are considerably more ($8.50 for a 12 oz can) and the VFW is a great pre-game option. The sound in Starland is good, and their layout is one of their biggest strengths; pretty much anywhere you stand you'll have a good view of the stage. It never seems far away. I'm taking off one star, however, because the show I was at (Testament / Overkill / Destruction) was clearly over-sold. I moved around, checked out a few vantage points during the headliner and eventually found a spot with some breathing room, in a raised area by one of the bars. But man, just imagining some kind of emergency situation and the absolute chaos that would ensue with such a packed-in, oversold crowd, it makes a person nervous.

The place was clean and had a lot of bathrooms. I sat in VIP section and had a great view. However…read moreI felt the sound was way louder than it needed to be even with my ear buds it was extraordinarily loud felt like I wasn't wearing earbuds. The fact the music was so loud so many people were searching for earbuds but nowhere sold them other venues. I've been to the bar will sell them or give them out for free depending. If that so many people are looking for earbuds then maybe there's a problem as I've been to other venue for shows and have not experienced people meandering around searching for earbuds.

They also closed off the wide archway (which allowed the flushing sounds of the closest restroom bleed into the house). Now only a single curtained entrance remains six or seven feet from where the rest rooms are. They did a fantastic job and from what I understand, the lobby will be further renovated in the future as well as other construction to help make the theatre the best it can be. I saw my first performance at the DLT in 2007 and got involved with the theatre in 2011. It really is a charming space to enjoy community theater and (should the reader be inclined) to get creatively involved. Unfortunately, its location in a residential area on a rather hilly section of Dover, NJ is perhaps the only considerable con regarding the theatre but there are ample parking spots about and a municipal parking lot two blocks away for theatergoers. I gave this theatre a four star review only because of the few shortfalls that naturally come with a small theatre. The theatre has no room for tall sets but for a small historical theatre but the stage has a wonderful width and depth that's been home to some absolutely wonderful sets, excellent productions and first rate performances. There is no way this theatre can compare with the Paper Mill Playhouse, but among the many community theatres in Northern New Jersey, Dover Little Theare more than holds its own and on those special and not seldom occassions, surpasses them with the quality of the acting.
