First the good: The food is good quality. The bagels are fresh and New York style. They have many speciality cream cheeses. The lox are good quality. Just about anything you order here you are going to enjoy the taste. Now the bad: Because of the above they are very busy and their infrastructure is horrible. First off they share a very small parking lot with three other businesses. A total of about six spots. Good luck with that. Someone is always parking outside the spaces because of this and you can't get out, if you ever got in to begin with. until they come out and move their car. Its nuts. Now add it is a small place and so when it is busy it is very cramped. Now add you can't fix that well if you are ordering to pick up unless you want to limit your order to what they have on their website. You HAVE to order online. They will not answer their phone. It goes into a taped message that says, "We do not answer our phone." (Why publish a number if you don't answer it?) Now add that they don't have all their items on that website menu. One Example of many: I like both Flagals and Beagules. They have them both, but you can't order them, or a sandwich made with one, from the website. Because of all the above it means a person like myself with severe mobility issues can't get in and out to stay on my feet a shorter period. There is the parking hassle, the long line too order, the long wait after the order. On a busy period it can take you 25-30 minutes on your feet to get in and out of this place. They have three chairs that are usually fully occupied. Though when they see the old half crippled guy with the cane standing someone offers a seat. (always appreciated when it happens) Now add the biggie. All of this comes at a premium. It is Manhattan pricing in the New Jersey burgs at the Bagel House. [check the receipt I posted] The bagels are decently priced but their speciality items... wow. The lox there is $48/lb. Now lox can be damn pricey but where I get mine usually it goes for just over $36/lb. That is $12 less a pound then the Bagel House and the place I get it at is just as good as here. The cream cheeses, also very pricey. If you are going to go here limit yourself to the website, order a sandwich - there is still a premium but no where near what they tack on for by-the-pound and be prepared to deal with the parking shuffle and the wait. For me, the food is good but I can't deal with the rest. I admit my bum pins make me a special case but I am not fond of places that make no consideration for their handicapped customers. And this place's infrastructure is badly thought through. I get it as a start up but this place is doing well and been around for awhile. Why do I come here you ask, because it's close to home, a small biz and I want to support but it's not worth it. 3) does their POS not have a "light on cream cheese option" does it not print onto the kitchens printer? 4) of you really want to come here, pre-order the food and pick up only. Don't bother walking in to order. Small space barely anywhere to stand. Need to always walk through and around people. 5) no tables no chairs ... well, there are two chairs to sit on while waiting. Good luck being the sitter. Again overly crowded. 6) unorganized. I ordered, waiting about 10-15 min when I finally got up and asked where my food was. I was met with an attitude by one of the women saying they are busy that's why. I'll start with the negatives. 1) Parking was meh. Only a few spots. You COULD park on the side street but you have to swing around the block to get to it. 2) The place gets so busy (hence, no parking) and you're all jammed in the tiny place waiting on your order WITH NO AIR CONDITIONING. I know, first world problems but geez. The positives. 1) LOTS to choose from. Not just bagels. Croissants. Muffins. Cookies. Biscuits. A HUGE assortment is bagels. A HUGE assortment of cream cheeses. Breakfast sandwiches. Lunch sandwiches. Etc. LOTS. 2) Service was nice. The lady who fixed my order was so sweet. 3) DELICIOUS!! I read the reviews before visiting and was worried about having a long wait time during lunch hours, but that must mainly apply to the weekend. I visited on a Wednesday afternoon, and although there was a steady stream of people flowing in and out, I didn't have to wait long for them to make my bagel sandwich. It's pretty small on the inside so I can see how packed it could get on a busy weekend. There's a few chairs and one small table to the side so I think most people take their bagels on the go instead of dining in. The sandwich is made on the spot so it takes a few minutes but well worth the wait. The cream cheese options weren't displayed in the fridge by the register when I went, but other reviews showed them in the display. This didn't bother me too much because the menu lists the options, but I would've liked to see what the cream cheeses looked like. I ordered the montauk sandwich with sausage and cheddar jalapeño bagel. I added avocado and scallion cream cheese (although the cashier suggested I don't get cream cheese with the montauk). After taking a few bites, I understood why she suggested not getting cream cheese on the sandwich because the toppings were slipping out every time I took a bite. However, I don't regret my decision to add avocado and scallion cream cheese because the cream cheese was so creamy and delicious; it definitely completed the sandwich for me. The best bagels in NJ are in Phillipsburg. Not gonna debate it - save your energy. I'm already sad I live 40 minutes away - don't need your negativity adding to my despair. #1 the shop is cute. I know that's like not scientific or whatever but too many shoppes have decided good bagelry (absolutely a word) is incompatible with design elements. #2 they are very clearly mixing, rolling, boiling, and baking the bagels right in shop. Nothing shipped in, nothing frozen, nothing stale. You can see folks working as you wait. I didn't take pics because that's weird and invasive. #3 the actual process is so smooth. We got 2 hot bagel sandies and a snack bagel (one thing about me I'm gonna have a snack on deck). Everything was ready in under 5 minutes. Cheese melted perfectly. Sosig savory and hot. You order and pay at the same time. The young person working the counter was excellent at keeping orders straight and the line moving. It all seems so simple but shoppes in my neck of the woods haven't figured that out yet - which is why I drove to dang near Pennsylvania for bagels. #4 French toast bagels. This is my all time fave bagel. A lot of people don't know this about me but I like things sweet lmao. Theirs has an incredible brown sugar crust that caramelizes once toasted. Sent me to orbit. My fave taste combo is sweet and savory and lord was this it!! #5 rainbow bagels. As your resident queer anytime I see a rainbow bagel I'm buying, though I always find them lacking flavor and dependent upon the fun color scheme to drive the purchase. These rainbow bagels actually tasted great. If this is the base for their plain bagels, then hit me up with a bakers dozen. My only complaint is that they appear to use unsalted butter and I think when you have bread you need the salted butter to break it up and add depth of flavor. I'm from NJ but now live in Maine, so whenever I get the chance to get a proper bagel I have to take it. We stopped here around 8am on a Sunday morning. It was buzzing--I counted at least 8 staff members and more than that many customers in the short time I was in there. Got a delicious bacon egg and cheese on an egg bagel. Just about everything is perfect about this bagel shop. Bagels have a wonderful texture and flavor and are a great size. Selection is good. It would be nice if they added power bagels to their selection for when I'm looking for a little fiber and nuts. Orders are always done correctly. The only down side is their pork roll. Well they're probably as fond of me as I am of them. I had to circle around to park on the street but it's not like it was far. I waited in line, placed my order, and they handed me my coffee while I waited for my food. The coffee was too hot to drink but also too hot to hold. They have no sleeves for the cups and no tables to set the coffee down. So silly me, I tried holding it from the top to save from burning. Not smart. I dropped the entire full cup of coffee on the floor! I didn't burn anyone. I tried to clean it up myself but they did it themselves. They did not offer me another cup. They didn't seem interested in selling me another cup either. But the bagel was pretty good. I got the feeling they just wanted me to leave. I was raised in Hackettstown, NJ and was home for my Dad's funeral. There are certain foods that I always get when I am home and a pork roll, egg, and cheese is a MUST. I went to the Bagel House and was not disappointed. It was delicious. Of course when in Rome (the old saying) I got a dozen bagels with cream cheese. They too were delicious. The salt ones have always been my favorite and they still are after trying theirs. The employees were abundant and very helpful. The wait was longer than expected but I did go at prime time (morning) and all employees were hopping. There was no one standing around so it was fine because of the circumstances of time I went. The menu items were abundant and sounded all so appetizing. This place needs to expand their building in my opinion because it is delicious, a crowd favorite, and has a dedicated following. The parking was challenging as well but worth it for my bagel fix. Great job Bagel House. I got my bagel fix when home because Texas doesn't have bagels like this. Would have loved to take some home and even looked if they could be shipped but unfortunately they couldn't be. I will be back when I go back home in June. I love everything about this place! 1. Deliciously textured, giant bagels that are perfectly dense/chewy. Who wants to bite into a bagel so dense that it will injure your jaw or tear out your filling?!? They are rolled, boiled and baked right in front of your eyes. 2. There is a huge assortment of well made cream cheese flavors to try. Their vegetable cream cheese is wonderful, with all of the fresh veggies cut into tiny pieces or shredded. I hate when I go somewhere and I get a giant chunk of something in my cream cheese. 3. Love the ambiance. The space is clean, bright and well laid out. Menus are neat and easy to read. Bagel variety's are on full display and easy to read. 4. I completely disagree with other reviews regarding the ordering process. Even though the place was very busy on a Saturday morning, I felt like I got my order in a very timely manner. I found the order taker to be competent and quick and you get a receipt with your number on it that they call out when your order is ready. Couldn't be simpler. This place deserves a 5 if it were just based on the Bagels and pastries, which are amazing. The downgrade is on the service: 1. On the weekend, you have to be willing to wait for parking, then wait up to another half hour for a breakfast sandwich. One lady went to Target and cane back and it still wasn't done. The girls are nice but the service is super slow. I actually watched the cook fry one egg at a time with a huge line of people waiting. One day, after waiting forever to park, I get inside and it was just me and a ton of employees, which made me wonder if the employees are taking up the parking. 2. Not a reason for the deduction but just a note that as a vegetarian I will no longer order egg and cheese because it is cooked on the same griddle with the meat (but that is most places.) 3. Owner needs to figure out how to label a separate area to order from the payments. Everyone gets confused entering into a packed waiting area asking where to order and where the line ends. 4. Most importantly and the primary reason for only 3 stars, I ordered a cheese sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and mustard. Just a cheese sandwich. I got home to a sandwich of just lettuce and tomato, no cheese, not even mustard. It wasn't cheap but I was on a lunch break so no time to go back. I tried again. Same order, plus I ordered a ham and cheese with nothing on it, and two croissants. It came to $17! I came home to 1 slice of cheese cut in half, on each half of the sandwich. At least this time they remembered all the ingredients. Tried again ordering the same sandwich. They even asked me what type of mustard and pulled several out for me to choose. Came home to one slice of choose on the sandwich, lettuce, tomato, no mustard. Posting pics from two different occasions. This is not an issue of brand (like Case's PR vs. Taylor Ham)...this is an entirely different product. I bought a sandwich for my husband and he couldn't eat it. I tasted it, and it was similar in flavor and texture to cheapy summer sausage. Zero stars for selling a non- pork roll product as pork roll.
