It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day. This is a lovely little boozer that has a huge garden for the summer and wonderful warm log fire for the winter. As it is out of town, you can knock 40-80p off the price of pint. A must if you're in the area.

Yesterday was the 13th annual Beer Festival (an annual fund-raising event) at the Rose and Crown, where ales, beers, and ciders flowed freely, burgers and sausages were grilled, and music was made under clear blue skies in the rear garden. We spent four hours at the festival, during the afternoon, chatting with local characters and trying a variety of ciders and beers. It was a very good time for all. Then today, after helping with the clean-up in the back garden at the R&C, we booked a family table at the Pub and all got together for Sunday dinner. We had roast beef and roast pork dinners with steamed vegetables, potatoes, cheesy cauliflower, and Yorkshire pudding. I had a pint of stout with dinner and a wonderful bit of spotted dick for dessert. The food and service was impeccable; the setting is grand, and the entire experience has capped off a great visit to Gloucestershire.

Winterstream Farm greeted us enthusiastically, served us in good time with delicious food, despite how busy it was when we turned up around 6pm. The staff were friendly and polite- a completely different experience to the one we had at the place we booked previously. Plus they didn't lie to their customers, which is always a bonus(!) Thank you! For the last minute rescue after we had called several other places who were unable to accommodate us at such short notice! 10/10 ~~~ Original experience: Mum booked a table for a party of 12 around lunchtime for Brimsham Park. She received a confirmation email that it had been booked for 5:30pm. On arrival, our party of 12 was told that they were short staffed and could not serve us food. When the manager was asked for, we were told that he was busy in the kitchen and could not speak with us. On our return home, it was discovered through a Facebook post, that the restaurant had refused service to other customers, citing that they were busy due to a party of 12 arriving. Presuming that party was us, and we didn't receive ANY service, just excuses, it appears they were lying to other customers and blaming us for it. Don't go here- it's no wonder they are short staffed if they treat their staff anything like their customers.
