This place is hands down my favourite place for breakfast in Melbourne. Coffee is delicious, served at perfect temperature and they have bonsoy. We both ordered the big brekky $18.50 and everything was generous and cooked to perfection.. Perfect poached free-range eggs.. Mushrooms, pork sausage, potato rosti, 3 rashes of bacon, tomato relish and sourdough toast. We were both very happy and full after our selection but watching them bring out everyone else's plates was so tempting. Lots of seating available both inside and outside.  Lots of free street parking (but 1P which is never sufficient when it comes to cafes).  I found the menu quite different as it had two types of burgers, a croque-monsieur, a lamb shoulder moroccan salad, chia pudding, some interesting pancakes, and a chickpea dish. None of these dishes had eggs in them. On the very left hand side, they had eggs on toast, the big breakfast, and smashed avo toast.  My friend and I decided to get the lamb shoulder moroccan salad which was shredded tender lamb (looked like pulled lamb, very fine and long strands), dotted with pomegranate seeds and submerged in sheep's yoghurt. It was nice but felt like it needed to be eaten with some bread, or pita bread. It seemed more of a side dish rather than breakfast/lunch or main dish so quite disappointing.  The roast chicken burger with 4 thin slices of chorizo, some jalapenos and some mayo was slightly larger than a slider and quite bland. I only liked the brioche bun but the filling was ok. My friend who was starving didn't eat all of her food.  The coffee was very weak and my friend did not like her white hot chocolate.  Service was ok. Split bills taken. The top 40 pop songs being played WAH-AY too loudly. Like, I love Calvin Harris... but not with my smashed avo. But maybe I am just showing my age? I have heard a lot about the hotcakes from Maddox but decided to take the (slightly) healthier option of salmon, avocado and house-made ricotta on whole grain bread. It was outSTANDINGLY presented. We also ordered a Bloody Mary (the hunt continues for Melbourne's best Bloody Mary) and as it was placed in front of us, the server said "this is the first Bloody Mary I've ever made". That's kinda like a chef saying "this is the first dish I've ever cooked". It doesn't immediately instil you with confidence. Thankfully it wasn't too bad and it was nice to see the server asking a lot of questions to ensure his next Bloody Mary was perfect. All-in-all this is an A-OK place for brunch. Flavours span the classics (coconut, strawberry) to the unusual (backlava anyone?) and they're all rather good. The texture of the gelati here isn't as creamy as others you will find about Melbourne, but for a local option that's not owned by a massive chain, I think it's great!

It's a small place with no seating, grab gelato for your walk home or get a take home pack. My only complaint is that service can be a bit indifferent. Not a lot of smile or chat and if you ask too much about the flavours the young lady may look at you like you are illiterate. Not that they need to impress as locals already love the gelato and there's always a good line here, but I still think a bit of extra friendliness is not a bad thing.

With its quirky fitout and menu, it wouldn't be out of place on the other side of the city. What's truly amazing about Little Byrd however, is that their coffee is GREAT.
