He was super patient with our "we're ready to order...no wait give us a second" confusion. The display is simple, but don't be fooled by its simplicity. The flavors are complex! The ube cookie begins with ube, middles with a pillowy sugar cookie, and ends with a touch of salt. The mochi loaf was probably my favorite. It's a warm chewy yet light batter. Every bite is a treat all on its own. The ube roll was a genius Filipino take on a regular cinnamon roll, honestly it's better than any roll I've ever tasted. The innards tasted like Dulce de leche, with teensy bits of pistachio. The ube glaze was gentle, not too sweet or overpowering in portion. Just enough ube drizzle for every bite. This bakery is located in a mess hall type situation with a dozen other spots, so it's perfect for hanging out with friends and trying new foods. There's of parking in the lot as well as lots of indoor and outdoor seating. The flavor combos at Ish's are unique, and everything is baked to perfection. I will be back soon! Baking with Ish knocked me out! (I'm literally so full and sleepy) I got the Pistachio Kalamansi, Spam Egg and Cheese Pandesal, and an Ube Cookie around 12 PM on a Friday, which totaled to about $28. The cashier and owner were friendly and seemed a little nervous, but I think they can be successful here. The Pandesal was an extremely rich sandwich with a cheesy, garlicky egg and two spams. It was delicious but so heavy and so rich. I wouldn't recommend this if you have a busy day ahead because this was so much to consume. The Kalamansi, on the other hand, was perfect. The pastry was heated up, so when I opened the box up in my car, the warm, nutty scent wafted out and filled the space. Located at the entrance of the blossom market hall, this place seems to be asian owned, and sells super delicious pastries. I got the spam cheese pandesal. It was SUPER garlicy and bold on the flavors. I also got their pistsachio and ube pastry. Both were very flavorful. The pies weren't done yet. The ones I saw on IG was a mango pie and dubai chocolate. The ones that were in the oven were all ube type pies. They seem to have seasonal pies on rotation so best to check their IG for the flavors offered. They only sell pastries so be careful not to ask for coffee. That's from next door lol. Came by here early-ish (pun!) on a Sunday morning and most items were already sold out! After trying their pastries, I can see why! The store is clean and well kept, and workers are friendly! I think I also spot Ish talking to some customers as well! The flavors of the pastries were all Ube themed today, and I went ahead with the Gluten Free Ube Banana Tea Cake, which was great for being GF! It was still moist and with a nice banana flavor, but wish the Ube flavor was a tad stronger. It also looks like they might be moving/expanding to the next door stall! Found my filipino dessert cravings satisfied in San Gabriel! Located in the Blossom Market Hall, right by the entrance along Mission Drive, you'll find this popular dessert stand. Came on a Friday about 40 min before closing--sadly all the popular ube desserts were sold out (not to self: come earlier or order online next time!) Tried the Turon Cheesecake (5/5): Fluffy (such perfect texture!), smooth, not too sweet, and perfectly balanced with fresh fruit (banana and jack fruit) and a delicious crust. The Ube Black Sesame Roll (4.5/5) was also amazing. Loved the marshmallow-like foam cream on top! Time and time again, I come to support Ish and get blown away at each pastry or pie I've tried and have yet to try. For example, today, I came in to try an ube pecan pie slice - and boom also landed with a black sesame pumpkin bun and an ube cheese pan de sal. My cravings got the best of me and how I ate the latter two pastries in under three minutes is beyond me. My senses were so strong that I am literally writing this with crumbs around my mouth. The breads were fresh, soft and delicious in every bite. Not too sweet in my opinion and you can really taste all the flavors that are described. The pillowy bite of that pan de sal is replaying in my head and I want ten more. Give him all your money and come support this wonderful exquisite baker. I've tried other things in the past two but needed to highlight this experience while it was clear in my mind. Located in his own space right when you enter the Ramona St entrance at Blossom Market hall- the unmissable Baking with Ish sign will welcome you. I spotted the ube flan black sesame bun while waiting in line at AK Fresh Roast and knew I had to try it. Ube, flan, and black sesame are some of favorite things so a dessert that combines all three sounded unbelievable. I was right - it was a perfect combination. The ube and black sesame flavors both came through without overwhelming each other, and the whole pastry was surprisingly filling. It's also not too ube so it's not overpowering, fairly light. Ube Donut- It was good. Great texture, soft. Ube Brioche Bun- Least favorite. A little dry, but still good. Stopped by Baking With Ish around 11 AM on a Friday and left pretty disappointed. None of the items listed on their online ordering page were available in store, which definitely threw me off. At that point, only one cookie was left and it wasn't even the Chocolate Chip I was hoping for (it was a salted shrimp flavor and just not what I had in mind). I had been hoping to try the Chocolate Chip, Ube Cookie, Earl Grey and Black Sesame Cookie, and Ube Cheese Pie, but none of those were available on this visit. We did end up getting the Spam Tocino Cheese Scone, which was interesting but didn't really make up for the lack of options. Not the experience I was hoping for, but I'd still come back to give it another shot and hopefully catch more of the menu. It was my first time in the area in a while and I am glad to try Blossom Food Hall. I tried out AK Fresh Roast and Baking with Ish. AK Fresh Roast was a 7/10 in terms of quality and taste. I liked the presentation of the drinks and overall cleanliness of the store front. I got an egg custard vietnamese coffee which the coffee was more like a light roast then a medium or heavy roast. I could not tell if there was a layer of egg custard since it tasted more like regular coffee foam. The drink itself was $6.50 and came out to $7.17 total with tax. The cup size looked like a grande size at Starbucks. Baking by Ish blew my mind with how good and new the pastries were. Maybe I'm biased as a Filipino American but I would rate Ish's baked good as 10/10. You really get a generous serving in each slice and the price is really fair. Like everything nowadays, $6 and up seems to be the norm in pricing. I got the ensaymada for $10 and the blueberry pie for $10. Total price with tax came out to $22.05. Yes $10 per baked good is more than the $6.50 drink from AK Fresh Roast but you get more food overall from Baking by Ish. The cost of labor and attention needed to present the baked goods nicely is loads better than a simple coffee drink that takes less than five minutes to make. Overall, if I had to choose between Baking by Ish and AK Fresh Roast, Baking by Ish outperforms in every aspect. read more

Ish is always thinking of what to do next within the confines of running his bakery. A lot of us are used to seeing the same things coming out of a bakery every time, and I appreciate that too. But I also want to see new creations regularly too. It provides a relatively newfound appreciation for the baker's hard work and creativity Ish keeps it simple yet implements his own creativity. You'll find chocolate chip cookies, cheese pandesal, and garlic ensaymada, but you'll also find blue corn bibingka, dulce de leche poppy seed buns, and coconut pandan cookies. Every now and then, Ish will experiment and do miso cookies or even anchovy cookies. At least you can try them once and brag to your friends that you tried it. Can't hurt! After all, quite a few dishes and baked goods we appreciate today were byproducts of experiments. Think the Kouign Amann, for instance. You'll also see his life partner, Jeff, helping Ish a lot at the shop, whether that is helping him zest some lemons, or even manning the shop while Ish is running a table at an event. Both Ish and Jeff are quite a team and that has totally helped with the longevity of the concept of Baking with Ish for years There's something for everybody at Baking with Ish, which is a great thing about it. Egg Omelet Brioche - was soaking wet of grease/oil.. I sadly did not like it. Tomato was just wet and no flavor. It was topped with flaky salt which helped a little. Not sure if there was some sort of citrus squeezed over top, but entire pastry was not coherent. Coconut Corn Pie - you can really taste corn with an after taste of coconut. Pie crust was not my favorite, felt dense and slightly burnt but flaky. Ube Meringue Pie - very very sweet. I now see why meringue pies are usually with a citrus. I had to remove the meringue top as it was way too sweet paired with the ube. Ube pie without the meringue was much better. Chocolate Espresso Cake - was what it was, ordinary. Cake was moist. Pumpkin Chocolate Cookie - tasted more like oatmeal and cinnamon. Missing pumpkin seasoning. Texture was good, ooey gooey soft. read more

This is a Filipino bakery with southeast Asian flavors. I tried a couple of pastries while browsing the food hall, and man, everything was delicious! My partner and I went to Blossom Market Hall to grab a coffee and couldn't help but be intrigued by the delicious smells coming from Ish's stand. We've been there a few times, but the first time we went, he had made a pumpkin scone that is absolutely one of the best pastries I've ever had. The texture was exactly how a scone is supposed to be: an initial crunch, but soft and pillowy on the inside, not hard and crumbly like many scones at other bakeries. We have tried a total of 5-6 different items now, and every single one of them has been a delight to eat. None of his pastries are overly sweet, honoring the flavor of each, whether ube, pumpkin, or another. My only complaint is that he hasn't had the pumpkin scone the other times we've gone; it appears he changes up the menu day-to-day, which is great, but I've been really wanting that pumpkin scone again! I have not came to this location at all so I cannot base my review on the location itself. BUT however, I can review on their ONE DESSERT that has BLOWN MY FREAKN MIND! This dessert was brought to one our Company Potlucks for Thanksgiving and boy was I so thankful that it was there. It called... drumroll please.... UBE COCONUT PIE! It was the PERFECT consistency and ratio of UBE goodness to coconut madness. The pie crust was not too flakey but just right.
