I guess this place is pretty polarizing! We went to old Sac one weekend and our normal spot was closed so we decided to be adventurous. Overall, the food here is average in my opinion. After ordering food at the counter, it took a while to come out even though I felt the restaurant wasn't very busy. The menu seems pretty authentic but the quality and portions of the food weren't worth what we paid. And for drinks, you either need to buy a bottle or can which I don't really blame them but it's not my favorite thing. Also, perhaps not directly related to this restaurant, there were a ton of flies and bugs everywhere since the trash wasn't emptied frequently. This place was the center of attention, as it was on the main drag during the Sacramento Music Festival . Sign says "Indo Café- Asian Cuisine" meaning Thai or Chinese food with an Indonesian twist. We were here the last day of the festival in 2015, on a Monday, and this place is normally closed on Monday. But today they are still open. No way they were going to pass up an opportunity to cash in on 20000+ fans converging on the Sacramento river front. They were going to be open all weekend long, Monday included. Chalk board menu outside, with cramped and close quarters inside. Mom and Pop affair, with pony tailed gray haired pop manning the cash register, and mom doing the cooking in the back. Wife tried the shrimp with mixed vegetables, while I got the beef with broccoli, two very safe dishes, that nobody could mess up. Or could they? Leisurely service, with long lines of people placing their orders, crowded and cramped amid the close quarters. Wife grabbed a rare spot outside on a bench, sharing with some other folks, while we waited for our order. 10 minutes later, the dishes arrive. Ample shrimp in the wife's dish, while my beef with broccoli tasted like no other such dish I've had before. The sauce was teriyaki sauce (what!) a bit too sweet, and didn't have the Chinese flavor I've come to expect. And the pieces of beef were extremely small, to cover up the small portion size. Hey, but what do you expect for $8.49 a dish? One year later, we come back on a Friday, the first day of the 2016 Sacramento Music Festival. I order the $8.49 Nasi Goreng, while the wife gets the $8.49 Bakmi Goreng, straight off the chalk board list. Wife's dish comes with big flat noodles, cabbage, green onions, celery with bits of chicken in a peanut sauce. Resembles pad thai a bit in taste, but without the egg. My dish comes with fried rice, and with the same cabbage, green onions, celery and bits of chicken in sauce, but with an over easy egg on top. Would have preferred a scrambled egg. Chicken is moist and tasty, and the dishes are different. Portion size on the small size. Can't say anything is memorable, as I'm still longing for my good old fashion Chinese food. Here for a hot date? At $8.49 a dish, it will be your last date. Above the white guy with a gray haired pony tail at the cash register, is a sign that reads "Smile you are on Camera" . What a hidden gem! While on a mission for some smoked trout next door, I happened to discover this amazing little cafe. From the outside, it doesn't look like much and the name "Indo Café" certainty does not sound like some authentic restaurant, especially in Old Sac. But don't be fooled! This little place will surprise you. The menu is loaded with authentic eats. My rule of thumb on ethnic dishes: The more difficult to pronounce, the better it'll taste! Unless it's foreign for such fine, fine delicacies like fruit flies or larvae.. Then maybe call Clark to join you. * Nasi Uduk * coconut rice with a plethora of textures and flavors. I can't seem to stay away from this dish. It's a perfect combination of salty, sweet, and savory. Not to mention the different textures from the meat, nuts, tempeh, and egg. It's the whole package! * Bakmi Goreng * such plump noodles! I love fat noodles. Looks like your typical chow mien, but it's full of flavor. * Resoles * chicken pastry served with peanut sauce. A little greasy on the outside, but creamy on the inside like a chicken pot pie. The flavor stands on its own and it didn't really need the sticky sweet peanut sauce, so I used the sauce with the sausage roll instead. * Sausage Roll * basic sausage shaped meatball baked inside of pastry puff. The space is small and cramped, so it's better to just grab and go. They have a pastry case and another one that sell Asian snacks. For such a small space, they sure have everything. I've been hunting for Indonesian food in Sac for ages! So I was surprised to find that this tiny place in Old Sac would be the one that satiates my cravings. I honestly hope that for those who are experiencing Indonesian food here for the first time don't think this is typical Indonesian food; it is NOT! I am from the region and know what real Indonesian food is suppose to taste like. The ingredients all taste stale. Everything tastes like years old seasonings from packets, heavy refried used oils, and tasteless carbs, while very limited on fresh meats and vegetables. While the service is good, the food is so bad Its a shame they've referenced this place to Bali. With the good customer service they try to provide, I think this place has potential but they have to focus on fresh ingredients. I love the appetizers and the Nasi Rames. Cap Cay has a wonderful sauce. Tahu Isi appetizer is good but too salty. Found this place in Old Sac through the help of Yelp. It doesn't look like the food would be great from the outside, but you really can't judge a book by its cover. Ordered the nasi kuning, nasi uduk, and chicken skewers. All the food had a great flavor to it and the spices definitely did not overpower the palate. I have walked past this restaurant numerous times with all of my visits to Old Sacramento. I was a block away taking care of "something," so we decided for our hour lunch break to try here. As I am recovering from a cold, I ordered the chicken laksa. I wish there were more noticeable chunks of chicken, but the chicken that was present, along with a delicious broth, surprised me in terms of location. I tend to not think of Southeast Asian food while walking back through the "Old West." That being said, it was a good temporary remedy to help my sinuses....as well as quite tasty. I don't know if I'd personally return, just because this type of food is the type you savor and enjoy. I'm just not sure if that fits the window shopping uppity atmosphere of Old Sacramento. I also ask for shrimp chips as it's a really great side to have with your meal. I always leave with a cendol because it's one of my favorite drinks. She takes credit cards, you order and pay upfront and she will call you. We tried the mango salad $9 and the seafood curry soup $18. I thought the soup was pricey. I was worried my nasi kuning plate would not be as good, since I had to customize it to be vegan without all the meat, but it was great! I loved the lemongrass spice on the tofu and tempeh. The potatoes were delicious too, a plus since I love potatoes! The goreng noodles were very flavorful and balanced. I never had fried tempeh before and it was delicious! We ordered the Curry Fried Rice with Chicken, Fried Noodles with Beef, and Satay Pork. The guy taking our order didn't bother to ask which kind of noodles. My fault for not clarifying. ‍ I was expecting flat rice noodles, instead I got egg noodles. But no biggie. Our order was for "here" and I went back to the counter/door to pick up our food. Which was served on paper plates. The portions are small. I went back to the window to ask for cups of water. The guy said "due to covid, we can't give those out". Okay, no biggie. I bought two water bottles (Sunny Select brand) for $2 each. Then about 5-10 minutes later, I see a white guy going to the counter and being given... A cup of water. For the inconsistency, losing a star. The prices on the Yelp menu pictures are not current. We spent $55 for 3 dishes and 2 waters, including a tip. Honestly, after the water cup thing, I definitely regret the tip. The food was only okay. But nothing worth going back for. It's been years since I had Indo Cafe. And my fond memories of the delicious food I had there will remain a memory. Not sure if it was just a rebranding or an owner change. But Bali Kitchen is not the same. My favorite is the Indonesian fried chicken (ayam goreng kuning) and their ketoprak (rice noodle with fried tofu, covered in peanut sauce) is also delicious! DELICIOUS! Having travelled to Bali last year and falling in love with their cuisine I've been dying to have that food again! This place truly captures the Balinese spices and authenticity of the food. Very vegetarian friendly as meat can be subbed or removed from most dishes. I had the tofu curry fried rice and added pineapple which was seriously amazing. If you like curry this dish is a must! It was a nice surprise to find an Indonesian restaurant in Old Sacramento! Indo Cafe is located on Front street (closer to the bridge side). There are a few tables inside for customers to enjoy their food. There are also plenty of patio tables outside the restaurant. Looking at the menu, there was so many dishes that sounded really good. I decided to order the following: Chicken Teriyaki, Chicken Noodle Soup, and Indonesian Noodle Soup. All of these dishes looked amazing! I only got to try the noodle soups. Pure and simple! This is a Hole in the Wall restaurant in Old Sac. After a River Ride on the Hornblower Cruise we all got pretty hungry. Since Bali Kitchen is just a few steps from the boat dock we all decided to give it a try and after looking at their menu on the outside windows we hopped right in. Inside it's small with about 5 tables and another 4-6 tables outside. After looking over the menu we were ready to order. Me and wifey got the Lamb Satay, my daughter got Fried Noodles w/ Chicken & last but not least my son Sweet & Sour Chicken with Rice. Food was ready in about 10 min and we all agreed it was pretty fast especially when you're hungry. Now onto the food! My lamb meal was very delicious and their food beats many Chinese Restaurants around Sacramento Area especially when I'm not big on Chinese food. Also took a few bites of my kids meals and they were just as good. No kidding here but I very much like this place and I hugely recommend you try it if you're in Old Sac area. I noticed the menu stated "Food is cooked to order with natural ingredients and fresh vegetables." I ordered the Cap Cay with chicken, beef, shrimp, vegetables, and rice in a creamy garlic sauce. It was just what I was looking for. Most plates are $11-$12 and include noodle soup, Thai curry, and teriyaki chicken, among others. Met a friend here for lunch. This is super casual, order at the counter, with very little inside seating. Despite that I liked it. I could see the asian ladies behind the counter cooking the food and reminded me of what we call mama-sans in my culture. Anyway had a shrimp/chicken noodle dish I couldn't pronounce that was very similar to pad Thai. The ingredients seemed very fresh with a light sauce. I enjoyed it but at $10.50 wasn't super cheap given the nature of the restaurant. Maybe because of its location in Old Sacramento? Anyway I hope to return sometime to try other menu items. read more

We also ordered Kroket on the side. I have to say the moment I took a bite of my Nasi Goreng...I fell in love! So delicious! They gave us two different levels of spice which is super spicy or just plain spicy. I have to say they were both spicy but I enjoyed the SUPER spicy instead. I have tried Kroket from many different places and I really like Bali Kitchen's version. It was fluffy and very tastey. I really enjoyed it. I've never been more disappointed in a meal than the one I had at Bali kitchen. I was so excited to discover an Indonesian restaurant in Sacramento and made a special trip just to try them out. The rice was advertised as coconut rice, but it certainly didn't taste like it. The consistency was too wet and I couldn't taste the coconut milk at all. The rendang beef was in tiny pieces that were way overcooked and had very little flavor. Sadly, the best part of my meal with the dried anchovies which reminded me of breakfast in the Philippines. I have had some incredible Indonesian food before and this was one of my least favorite. One of the best meals that I had for a while. It was my first time here and I ordered one risole, which is like a chicken pot pie, and the lemon grass chicken plate. Most of the time when I have lemon grass chicken, they lack the flavor and aroma of the lemon grass. I honestly did not think much of my order until I took my first bite of the lemon grass plate. I literally had to put my fork down and take a picture to tell other Yelpers!. I was amaze on how I could taste the lemon grass along with the other aromatics and natural flavors of the other vegetables. The rice portion was not a lot, but just right, if you consider the amount of food that was on the plate. I will also admit that there was a lot of vegetables, but this does not take away the enjoyment of the meal. There was a decent amount of protein too; More protein doesn't mean it is a better dish. So this tiny place is next to Rio City Cafe along the River in Old Sac. I heard they had amazing Indonesian food and have been wanting to try it for a while. Stopped in for lunch and the owners (husband/wife team) were SUPER nice, helpful, and the food was fabulous. The husband suggested the Nasi Goreng for first timers. It is a plate with turmeric rice and four small helpings of beef, potatoes, tempeh, and peanuts. You get a little taste of several dishes and all are quite tasty. I never liked tempeh, but the way they cook it is yummy. We also got the Bakmi Goreng - noodles with chicken and boy choy and other veggies. Great sauce! We also tried two pastries, the croquette (like a handheld Shepherd's Pie) and Risoles (interesting sweet and savory chicken crepe), both served with peanut sauce. We enjoyed all the dishes we tried! We are really lucky to have this friendly little taste of Indonesia right here in Old Sac! Give it a try - you won't be sorry! Smaller locally owned restaurant featuring fusion style Asian cuisine. The parking is the old town standard of street only. Typically there may not be parking right in front when you get there (it's a popular lunch spot) but almost always is available around the corner, the surface lot across the street, or if all else fails the parking garage not quite a block away. The is a limited amount of inside seating-a half dozen or so table and chair combos and inside the decor is all white, thus very well lit. There is extensive picnic table style seating outside, which is shared with a handful of other restaurants. While there can be a small line at peak lunch rush, it moves quick. I've never really had an significant wait time to get my order. The menu has tons of noodle/rice dishes and anything can be made vegetarian by simply asking. You can get tofu substituted for any meat option for a dollar or so more, with the exception of some of the appetizer options. The sauces are invariably on the sweet side. It is not possible to get anything spicy or savory here. To be honest, I didn't enjoy the sticky sweetness of the dishes. Currently I'm not penalizing that by removing stars as my experience with this style of cuisine is exclusively with the south part of the area. I'm earnestly informed by the cook that the style of cooking is northern. Pricing is lower then I expected. It's entirely possible to get a substantially portioned meal including a drink for ten dollars a plate, which seems like a bargain. The restaurant is owned by a retired air force veteran and his wife, and I really, really wanted to like this place more. A perhaps excessively generous four stars for now. read more

You've gotten this far (you've found an Indonesian restaurant in a random tourist area in a random American city), so you probably already know where this going. I really wanted to like this place but, deep down, I knew what was coming. It's just so hard to find Indonesian food, even in the more ethnically diverse reaches of the American continent. San Jose has a little market that sells Indonesian goods and will cook some dishes if you're willing to wait long enough for them to do so. West LA has its tiny Indonesian cafe. And I've come across other places, usually randomly, surrounding other urban centers, but they're often gone before I can go again or even recommend them. For whatever reason, Malay and Singaporean food is easier to find but, Indonesian, it seems, is a cuisine that even the most savvy American diner has yet to appreciate. I tasted the fried rice first. It was just mostly soy sauce (too much of it). Then we had gotten chicken satay for our kid. He ate it up, but I'm not sure how, because it was so rubbery and covered in an oily peanut sauce. It was also not typical satay - strips of chicken - but rather chicken chunks that were skewered. Mine came out and had lots of wrong to it, very much climaxing in a pinkish beef rendang that I felt was at least trying to resemble the versions I've had before. It was $12 and served in a styrofoam container. But you're in Old Sacramento. Are you going to do a lot better? Well, yes, but this is at least something more interesting than fish and chips next door, or some greasy Mexican place. Maybe we got the wrong dishes. They made a big deal about their fried chicken. I've had Indonesian fried chicken, and I think it rivals the Japanese version, if not bests it. But I was in the mood for a rice dish. And maybe that was what was wrong. The people were very friendly. I don't take a lot of pleasure in critiquing the food, but I don't want anyone else to come in with their hopes held high.
